Jillian Harper 01/19/2022 SPCH 1311 Applications of Communication Principles #1 I am highly competent with appropriately adapting messages to others, which is principle five. I need to adapt my communication to my peers, my parents and co-workers. I am also a substitute teacher at an elementary school where I need to communicate with other teachers, administrators, and children whose ages range from 4 to 11. Within each class I need to adapt my communication skills to make sure the message is getting to each student. Sometimes I need to change the vocabulary so each child can understand what is being taught. I have the least amount of competence in listening and responding thoughtfully to others, which is principle four. I chose principle four because it is really hard for me to focus completely on one conversation. There are many external things that distract me such as basic house noises, the wind causing a tree branch to tap on my window, and even different types of lighting. My head is also constantly full of thoughts that usually have nothing to do with what is going on in the moment, which is my biggest distraction in my opinion. This also makes it difficult for me to respond due to my lack of listening effectively to what the person is saying to me.
