FIRST ATTEMPT NURSING 160 CLINICAL SKILL CHECKLIST APPLYING AND USING A GAIT BELT PROCEDURE STEPS Yes 1. Obtains help of second person to help assist if needed. 2. Puts non-skid footwear on patient/resident 3. Applies the gait belt to the waist of the patient across the umbilicus but over the clothing. 4. Ensures gait belt is snug enough to comfortable fit 2 fingers under the belt. 5. Assists patient to a standing position while maintain a strong grasp of the gait belt at the lower back or using both hands near each side of the waist of the patient based on patient needs. 6. Allows patient to steady themselves and asks if they are ready to ambulate. 7 Constantly assesses patient for signs and symptoms of dizziness or fatigue. 8. When ambulation is complete, assists patient back to seated position while a strong hold is maintained on the gait belt. 9. Removes gait belt from patient when ambulation is complete. 10.
