(1945 - 1989) He was a spy from the Soviet Union working in Canada. He “defected” and told Canada he was a spy and wanted to stay in Canada. I hand in these 2 on a different document dfone Berlin Airlift (1948 - 1949) - USSR blocked the western Allies railway road - Considered to be the first battle in the cold war - Battle was won by the US without using a single bullet Creation of NATO (1949) - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949 - One of the reasons it was created was to prevent communism Communist Victory in Chinese Civil - China became a Communist country - China became communist in 1949 - China bcame allies with USSR - Canada sent the royal Candian air force to help the allies - Canada provided recources for the allies - Canada make sures nothing goes wrong and that peace is kept - Canda was one of the founding members of nato - Canada and China became enemys untill 1970 - Canada and China stopped trading goods War (1949) Korean War (1950 - 1953) Coup in Iran (1953) Creation of Warsaw Pact (1955) - Started when North korea invaded South korea - 920,000 chinese died due to the war - The allies came to aid south korea - started in 1950-1953 - Was orcheastrated by the CIA and MI6 - Prevent the USSR from getting recources from iran - Was created due to NATO and by the USSR - Was made as a counter balance to NATO - 26,000 Canadians were sent to aid south korea - The Canadians that were sent to korea stayed for 3 years after the war - Canada was against the Soviet Union - Canada was part of NATo - Canada was with the allies Hungarian Revolution (1956) - Hungary was a satalite state for the Soviet Union and wanted to get out - The revolution failed resulting in thousands of deaths - The US wasnt able to help which caused Hungary to lose the revolution - Lots of Hungarian refugees went to canada - Hungarians helped Canada out with the building of a Canal Suez Crisis (1956) - Eygpt tried to take the canal - Britain and France had paid for it got angry - Britian and France eventually take the Canal back - Canada helped with the peace keeping mission - Pearson (a canadian) helped put canada in an independent place in the world. - Sputnik was launched on October 4th, 1957 at 7:28 pm - Sputnik was the first succesfull artificial satelite - The satelite was launched by the Soviet Union - Canada had no role - First satelite to be launched Sputnik Launched (1957) Creation of NORAD (1957) Building the Berlin Wall (1961) Cuban Missile Crisis (1963) - Treaty between Canada and the US - Was made to conduct aerospace warning and control in the defense of north america - The wall was created to keep the Soviet side and the allies side split from eachother - Prevented East germans from fleeing to west germany - East germany was controled by the soviet union while West germany was under the allies - USSR put nukes in Cuba - Canada and the US sorounded Cuba to try to prevent them from shooting nukes to the US and Canada - Canda was one of the 2 nations in the treaty - Canada helps with the survaliance of North America - Canadians helped defend west germany from The Warsaw pact - Split germany into 2 - Canda helped soround Cuba - The Cuban missle crisis was the closest the world got to nuclear war Vietnam War (1955 - 1975) Fall of the Berlin Wall & Collapse of USSR (198990) - North Vietnam was infected with communism and the other side wasnt - US was trying to stop the spread of communism by attacking part of Vietnam - Canda acted as a safe heaven for 30,000 -40,000 deserted american soldiers - Canada acted as a support rather then helping America in the front lines - Germany was reunified which caused the collapse of other regimes - The fall the berlin wall was on of the first steps to germany being reunified - Gorbachev resigned causing the fall of the soviet union - Canada helped with supplies in troops overall during the cold war and helped with peacekeeping missions-
