NCM 114
Activity Instruction: Answer the following
• What is the video all about?
Beyond the fear of being a burden on their immediate families, older adults may also feel this
worry within the broader community. Like many older adults, they feared the loss of
autonomous function and the possible damage of their social network. Although severe
complications of the operation were impossible, the fear of being a burden was, for many
days, a very real and maybe unnecessary barrier to her consent.
• What are the conditions why the elderlies have been put in the elderly institution?
It is normal for the elderly to become vulnerable, defenseless, powerless and unproductive,
not just because of the lack of functioning structures, but also because of the manner in which
they are now treated by society as a whole and even by their own families. Significant
changes in contemporary society and a growing search for inclusion into the labor market for
family members, including women, are increasing the number of elderly people in nursing
homes because they decrease the capacity of elderly caregivers. Thus, the chances of growing
older in the family setting or the requirements for women to play the role of caregivers of
elderly relatives are greatly reduced, even though the Older Law specifies that the elderly are
the responsibility of the family, the community and society. In view of these developments,
there is a rise in institutionalization as the age rises. As a result, elderly people who are
viewed as unable to work and unable to perform their basic citizenship duties can have
nursing homes as well.
