INTRODUCTION
- The purpose of this assignment is to:



Design efficient networked systems
Implement test and diagnose networked systems
Evaluate the networked systems and future improvement
- Important parts of the assignment:




P5) Provide a logical/physical design of the networked system with clear explanation and
addressing table.
P6) Evaluate the design to meet the requirements.
P7) Implement a networked system based on a prepared design.
P8) Document and analyze test results against expected results.
P5) Provide a logical/physical design of the networked system with clear explanation and addressing
table.
1) The difference between the logical and the physical design:
1.1) Physical Topology:
- Physical topology indicates arrangement of different elements of a network. It reflects physical layout of
devices and cables to a form a connected network. It is concerned with essentials of network ignoring
minute details like transfer of data and device type. The pattern of arrangement of nodes (computers)
and network cables depends on ease of installation and setup of the network. It affects cost and
bandwidth capacity based on solution of devices. It takes into account placement of nodes and distance
between them. Devices can be arranged to form a ring (Ring Topology) or linearly connected in a line
called Bus Topology.
1.2) Logical Topology:
- Logical Topology reflects arrangement of devices and their communication. It is the transmission of data
over physical topology. It is independent of physical topology, irrespective of arrangements of nodes. It is
concerned with intricate details of network like type of devices (switches, routers) chosen and their
quality, which affect rate and speed of data packets delivery. The logical topology ensures optimal flow
control that can be regulated within network. The data can either flow in a linear pattern called Logical
bus or in form of a circle Logical ring.
1.3) The difference between logical and physical design:
- Logical layout of a network can be defined as the mode of communication that connects two computers
connected to a network. Logical layout consists of the outflow of data between two systems. In actual
sense network connectivity is based on logical design of a network. The physical layout design is installed
using logical design.
- The logical network can also be upgraded and can be used to connect two or more computers together.
Logical design of a network consists of virtual design while the physical design of a network describes the
hardware functions of the network. Logical designs determine the flow of data or communication
between two networks while physical design is a communication between two computers connected with
cables.
- For example, a physical design of a network can be upgraded to link two or three office buildings. The
expansion would require an upgrade using logical design layout of a network. This would make it easy for
information to be processed from any system in buildings at the same time.
- Physical layout of a network is based on a logical layout. For example, an organization that installs a wide
area network would be drawn as a single line diagram; this is a basic design of a physical layout. Thus, the
explanation it means that logical design of a network can be developed or expanded using physical design
while retaining its original characteristics.
2) Explain the user requirement for this design:
- People: 200 students, 15 teachers, 12 marketing and administration staff, 5 higher managers including
the head of academics and the program manager, 3 computer network administrators.
- Resources: 50 student lab computers, 35 staff computers, 3 printers
- Building: 3 floors, all computers and printers are on the ground floor apart from the IT labs – one lab
located on the first floor and another located on the second floor
- Explain:



Ground floor: contains 35 staff computers (include 3 admin computers) and 3 printers
First floor: contains 25 student lab computers
Second floor: contains another 25 student lap computers
3) Logical design of networked system:
- Switch2 is the ground floor which contains 35 staff computers and 3 printers
- Switch0 and Swicht1 are first floor and second floor which contain 50 student computers
4) Physical design of networked system:

2) Evaluate the design of the network:
- My design of the network is still not perfect. There are some limitations in the networked system:


The server room is not clearly located
The IP addresses of the system and the PCs are confusing and easy to misunderstand.
- However, my design also has some advantages:




The networked system is divided clearly into three different floors: ground floor, first floor, and
second floor.
The design has met the requirements of the manager: enough 35 staff PCs (include 3 admin PCs),
50 student PCs, and 3 printers.
The server room is separated from the PCs room for simpler maintenance and improvement
The network layout has been effectively indicated with clearly explanations
P7) Implement a networked system based on a prepared design:
1) RIP router_WAN:
To RIP router_WAN for more connections with other routers, we use “configure terminal” mode and type
“router rip”. Then, enter the network you want to connect.
2) RIP router_LAN:
To RIP router_LAN for connections with router_WAN and other routers, we enter “configure terminal”
mode, then type “router rip” to RIP the router. Finally, enter the network you want to connect.
My network here is “192.168.0.0”
3) Ping PC_1 to PC_25:
To test the connection between two PCs in one switch, I have pinged PC_1 and PC_25. First, enter the
Command Prompt in Desktop mode of the PC_1. Then, type “ping 192.168.1.3” to ping to PC_25.
“192.168.1.3” is the IP address of the PC_25. You can ping to any PC if you know the IP address.
4) Ping PC_1 to PC_50:
To test the connection between two PCs in two different switches, I have pinged PC_1 and PC_50. First,
enter the Command Prompt in Desktop mode of the PC_1. Then, type “ping 192.168.6.3” to ping to
PC_50. The connection was successful with 0% loss.
5) Ping Admin PC to Staff PC:
To test the connection between Admin PC and Staff PC, first, enter the Command Prompt in Desktop
mode of the Admin PC. Then, type “ping 192.168.6.3” to ping to Staff PC. The connection was successful
with 0% loss.
“192.168.6.3” is the IP address of the staff PC
6) Configure static Interfaces at routers:
6.1) LAN_router:
6.1.1) Interface fa0/0:
This step is to configure the static Interface of the interface fa0/0 (which connects to the switch of mail
server 1). The IP address is 192.168.0.1 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
6.1.2) Interface fa1/0:
This step is to configure the static Interface of the interface fa1/0 (which connects to the switch of the
first floor and the student PCs). The IP address is 192.168.1.1 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
6.1.3) Interface fa1/0:
This step is to configure the static Interface of the interface fa6/0 (which connects to the switch of the
second floor and the student PCs). The IP address is 192.168.6.1 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
6.1.4) Interface fa1/0:
This step is to configure the static Interface of the interface fa7/0 (which connects to the switch of the
ground floor). The IP address is 192.168.7.1 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
6.1.5) Interface Se2/0:
This step is to configure the Interface of interface Se2/0 (which connects to WAN_router and the outside
network). The IP address is 192.168.2.1 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
6.2) WAN_router:
6.2.1) Interface fa0/0:
This phase is to configure Interface fa0/0 which connects to switch of outside network. The IP address is
192.168.6.2 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
6.2.2) Interface Se2/0:
This phase is to configure the Interface Se2/0 which connects to LAN_Router. The IP address is
192.168.2.2 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
7) Configure and Setup DHCP service at LAN router:
7.1) DHCP service for PCs on first floor:
This step is to assign the DHCP address for 25 PCs on the first floor. To configure the DHCP, you must have
the DHCP pool for first floor by pressing “ip dhcp pool first_floor”. Then enter the network, set the
gateway by typing “default-router 192.168.1.1” and finally set the dns-server by typing “dns-server
192.168.4.1”
7.2) DHCP service for PCs on second floor:
This step is to assign the DHCP address for 25 PCs on the second floor. To configure the DHCP, you must
have the DHCP pool for second floor by pressing “ip dhcp pool second_floor”. Then enter the network, set
the gateway by typing “default-router 192.168.1.1” and finally set the dns-server by typing “dns-server
192.168.4.1”
7.3) DHCP service for Staff PCs on ground floor:
This step is to assign DHCP addresses for staff PCs. Three Admin PCs and three printers need static IP
addresses. Therefore, I have excluded six DHCP addresses (192.168.7.1 – 192.168.7.6) from 3 admin PCs
and 3 printers.
Explain:



First, create DHCP pool for ground floor by pressing “ip dhcp pool ground_floor”
Second, set the gateway by typing “default-router 192.168.7.1” and the DNS server by typing
“192.168.4.2”
Finally, exclude six addresses for admin PCs and printers by typing “ip dhcp excluded-address
192.168.7.1 192.168.7.6”
