Science Notes on Magnets 1. The Earth is a Giant Magnet. It’s magnetic field surrounds us in space. 2. The Earth’s magnetic field causes the aurora borealis (Northern Lights). 3. Magnets have a North and South pole. 4. A Compass finds the Earth’s magnetic North Pole. 5. Nickel, Cobalt, and Iron are attracted to magnets. They are ferromagnetic. 6. If you break a magnet in two, it will still have a North and South pole. 7. If you face two magnets together, like poles will repel and opposite poles will attract. opposites attract (stick together) likes repel (push away from each other) 8. Magnets can exert a force from a distance. They can push or pull things without touching them. ELECTROMAGNETS: 9. An electromagnet uses electricity to turn the magnet on or off. 10. Electromagnets are useful because you can control the strength of the magnet. 11. Electromagnets are used to lift and move heavy metal objects.
