Acid/Base Lab
Question: Which substances are acidic, which are basic, and which are
neutral?
Prediction:
I think vinegar is:
▢ acidic
▢ basic
▢ neutral
I think coffee is:
▢ acidic
▢ basic
▢ neutral
I think detergent is:
▢ acidic
▢ basic
▢ neutral
I think milk is:
▢ acidic
▢ basic
▢ neutral
I think baking soda is:
▢ acidic
▢ basic

● coffee
● detergent
● milk
● baking soda (dissolved in water)
● black tea
● spot plate
● pH indicator strips and legend
Process:
1. Dip the edge of the indicator strip into the first substance.
2. Observe the colour change on the strip, and note it in your
observations.
3. Compare your test strip to the legend and write down the pH number.
4. Test the rest of your substances.
5. AFTER all observations are done, complete the third column of the
table, deciding if the substance is an acid, a base, or neutral.
