SPEECH STYLE It is the way in which something is said or expressed. It is a communicative style which portrays how a language is characterized in terms of degree of formality. INTIMATE CASUAL FORMAL CONSULTATIVE FROZEN SPEECH STYLE This style applies to conversational experiences among people who share intimate relationships. This style is private, which occurs between or among close family members or individuals. This also employs informal and intimate language. EXAMPLES: ✓ Telling your gf/bf that you love them ✓ Telling your best friend your darkest secrets ✓ Asking your family for advice This is a speech style used by friends and peers. You use casual speech when you want a person to feel at ease. In a casual speech, we use slang, contractions and simplified vocabulary. WE USE TO ADDRESS ONE ANOTHER EXAMPLES • Everyday conversation with buddies or friend • A personal message and personal emails • Blogs • Tweets This is the normal style for speaking to strangers or persons who are neither acquaintances nor friends nor relatives. Professional or mutually acceptable language is a must in this style. EXAMPLES: ✓ Doing a job interview with the manager of the restaurant. ✓ A student asking a teacher about the details of his project. ✓ Having a doctor’s appointment. It is a one-way communication which aims to transmit information to the listeners. It is used in speaking to large groups and is impersonal in nature. It uses well-organized grammar and diction. It avoids using slang terminologies EXAMPLES • Meetings • Speeches • State of the Nation Address • Welcome address • Classroom announcements This style of communication rarely or never changes. It is generally used in print media, rules or declaration. It has a fixed and static language and uses long sentences with a good command of grammar.
