The Pros and Cons Of The Use Of Emojis In Everyday Life

Nowadays it is almost impossible to see messages that lack the use of emoticons, they are
integrated into many different modes of communication like SMS, email, social media, etc.
Emojis are now something that people have integrated into their everyday life and though there
are negatives associated with the use of emoticons I believe that they help bridge the gap that
exists within communicating online.
An important aspect to consider when discussing the use of emojis is that they can indicate the
tone of the conversation, and this is crucial when people are not communicating face to face. The
tone of a message is something that can often be misunderstood when not said in person,
however emojis enhance this aspect. It can, for instance, add to the happy feeling of a positive
announcement or it can indicate bad news but at the same time lighten the mood of the
conversation. Therefore, emojis can reflect what we intend to communicate over the internet,
because often even before reading the message people notice the emoji attached to it first and
this can set the mood of the conversation. Therefore, it is clear that emojis enhance the clarity
and understanding of the message, something that simple words cannot do on their own. In
addition to this, there are some people that are not the best at communicating their feelings
through words, and emoticons over them an alternate because it easy to perceive feelings from
visual representations.
However, the meaning of emojis is also incredibly subjective and this is primarily because the
meaning depends on the context of the message and the ever-changing cultural trends. In
addition to this, new emojis are added every year and the interpretation of these changes can
differ universally. For instance, while a upside down smiley face might mean being happy for

one person it could hold negative connotations for other people. It also depends on who you are
communicating with, because sending a cryptic emoji will hold different reactions when sending
it to a friend versus sending it to an older family member. Therefore, it is important to take into
account the generational differences and what kind of understanding a certain emoji holds when
sending it to another person. In addition to this, it is also important that people understand when
it is appropriate to use emojis and when it is not, because using them in a formal email or letter
can be incredibly unprofessional. In some cases, emojis do not fit the serious nature of a message
and it can confuse the reader if the tone of the message and chosen emojis are conflicting.
In conclusion, while emoticons are a relatively new phenomenon it is something that people have
integrated into their lives across all ages. While it is a great way to communicate feelings
through visual representation and clarify the tone of the message it is also important that people
understand what situations are appropriate to use emojis and when they are not as this can lead to
confusion or a misunderstanding of what the emoji is attempting to convey.
