Opening Questions
How did the simulated experience of Vernon Russell’s case make you feel?
It made me nervous at first because I wasn’t sure where to start. As I got more comfortable with the
layout and Russell’s condition I felt it was very informative with feedback.
Talk about what went well in the scenario.
I think I did well on assessing the patient prior to administering medication. I felt good about the
introduction I made even if the first time I did not pass.
Reflecting on Vernon Russell’s case, were there any actions you would do differently if you were to
repeat this scenario? If so, how would your patient care change?
I think that in my final attempt I was happy with most of what I did. I think however I might have
wanted to check blood sugar prior to any medication adminsteration.

What priority problem(s) did you identify for Vernon Russell?
Priority problems I felt Vernon had was his dysphagia, muscle weakness and stroke.
S/EBP Correlate the abnormal coagulation studies results to Vernon Russell’s current treatment that
has been initiated thus far.
Informing Russell to stop smoking and the importance of walking to decrease the risk fo a DVT forming.
EBP/I What resources are available to the interprofessional health care team to guide the care of
Vernon Russell and/or any stroke patient?
Physical therapy, speech evaluations, and support groups can play a major role in helping patients
similar to Vernon.
PCC/S Discuss the rationale for Vernon Russell being placed on NPO status?


Due to the dysphagia as a result of his stroke, Vernon was unable to swallow medications requiring the
NPO status.
PCC/S How did you respond to Vernon Russell’s question related to why he needs someone to help
him walk, and what is your rationale for your response?
It is important to reduce risk of falls as much as possible and by calling prior to ambulating the risk is
decreased already.
PCC
Utilizing Vernon Russell’s health history, identify factors that predisposed him to having a stroke.
His excessive smoking along with the fact that he has not exercised are major in increasing stroke risk.
T&C
Discuss why the referral for speech therapy is important in Vernon Russell’s care.
His left sided weakness creates more problems with his dysphagia and he can not take medications
orally or intake adequate food and nutrient if unable to swallow properly.
Concluding Questions
Describe how you would apply the knowledge and skills that you acquired in Vernon Russell’s case to an
actual patient care situation.
By now knowing how to properly asses a patient having similar issues to Vernon, and having a
better understanding of what stroke patient deal with.
