Problem 1)
A bar, supported on left, with varying cross section areas were shown in the above drawing.
Suppose P1 = 4 kN, P2 = -2 kN, P3 = 3 kN, A1 = 200 mm2, A2 = 100 mm2 and A3 = 150 mm. Plot
the axial force and average axial stress along the length of the bar. Use two seperate graphs.
Problem 2)
A planar frame was shown in the above drawing. Determine the average axial stress in the
member BC if the effective cross section area of member BC is 400 mm2. Note that dimensions
in the drawing are in mm.

Above drawing shows a joint designed to transmit tensile force using a pin between the rods.
If we assume that the maximum allowable shear stress in the pin is half the maximum tensile
stress in the rods, what should be the diameter d (in terms of D)?
