1-How did Jonas feel about being the Receiver at the beginning of Chapter 16?
He didn’t want to be the receiver and he wanted his childhood back
2-What does Jonas learn from the birthday memory? (ch. 16)
Jonas learns how it feels to be celebrated and honored as a unique individual.
3- Which memory is The Giver's favorite? (ch. 16)
A Christmas memory of a family.
4- Describe The Giver's favorite memory that he gave to Jonas. How did Jonas
feel about it?
There was a tree with lights on it inside a house. Children were unwrapping
packages. Jonas perceived family. The Giver explained what Grandparents were.
He also gave Jonas the word “love.” Jonas liked the memory. He wished his life
could be that way although he thought it might be a little bit dangerous.
5-Which new words, concepts or emotions does Jonas learn in this memory?

Family, grandparents, and love.
6-What do Jonas' parents tell him when he asks if they love him? (ch. 16)
They tell him it is inappropriate to use a generalized and obsolete(old, meaningless)
word like "love." They also tell him to use more precise language. W en they asked
him whether he understood why it was inappropriate, he said that he had ,but he lied
fort he first time.
7-What is Jonas' first lie to his parents? (ch. 16)
He lies when he says that he understands why it is inappropriate to use the word like
"love."
8-Why does Jonas choose to throw away his pills? What change does that
show us about Jonas’ character?
Something had grown within him after he had taken those memories. He believed in
the equality that everyone in the community must feel these good memories such as
grandparents, love, boat rides and picnics. This shows that Jonas is emotional and
affectionate. He immediately feels love. Besides, he doesn’t want to obey those rules
anymore where there are lots different things out there. He wants both himself and
others to make their own choices.
