Principles of Management (MAN101) Principles of Management “Principle” – a basic truth, laws or facts. “Management” – planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Management can be viewed as both an art and a science. The art of management is to make people and the organization more effective and efficient. The science side of management is the methods and tools to accomplish the objectives and goals. The following information on the course and assessments is from the Unit Guide, please make sure you have a copy and are familiar with the requirements. Learning Outcomes 1) Have basic knowledge of management theory. 2) Understand about the role of managers and how effective managers work. 3) Situate any management act within the overall administrative process from planning to control. 4) Relate management to the administrative specialties/functions of finance, marketing, operations management and human resource management, both in the firm and in the undergraduate program. (Firm = business/organization) 5) Comprehend the relation between management and governance of the firm. 6) Be able to assimilate and discuss articles and information about business and management. Assessments VALUE (/100) ULOs 1 Quiz (Individual) Due session 2 through 11, In-class 15% 1-3 2 Pre-recorded videos & Presentations (Group) Due 23:55, 2nd-to-last night before each session, on E-learning Due session 2 through 11, In-class 20% 1-3 3 Debates & Discussions (Group) Due sessions 3,5,7,9,11, In-class 15% 4-6 4 Final exam (Individual) Due week 14 (TBC) 50% 1-6 No. ASSESSMENT ITEMS AND DUE DATES Online Quizzes (15%) • There will be 10 quizzes at the start of each class from Session 2 to Session 11. • There will be 20 questions in True/False or Multiple Choice formats. • You will have 15 minutes to complete each session. • You can complete the quiz on a laptop or mobile phone. • Results are calculated automatically. • If you miss the quiz you will not have an opportunity to take it again. • Following each quiz I will check attendance. Pre-recorded Group Presentations (20%) • There will be 10 sessions for presentations, each group will present twice during the course. • Groups are required to make a video recording reproducing, in their own words, the key points of the assigned readings for each session (2-11). • In other words your group will make a video each week and upload it to E-Learning two (2) days prior to the class. So before midnight on Wednesday. • Every student in the group must present in the video. • I will watch all videos before class, then during the class will ask 1 or 2 groups to present their video. The video will be shown to the class without volume, and each group member will present a certain aspect of the video. • This will be followed by questions and answers from the other groups. Pre-recorded Group Presentations (20%) • Videos will be a maximum of 15 minutes, with each student presenting for 2 – 3 minutes. • So, each week your group will: 1) Decide what the major points/topics are from the next weeks session. 2) Organize these so each group member has a specific topic to discuss. 3) Create a video (2-3 minutes) on your topic. 4) Join each group members video together so that it appears as one coherent presentation. 5) Upload to E Learning before midnight on the Wednesday. 6) Be ready in class in case your group is chosen to present. This will happen twice during the session, and groups are chosen randomly, so be ready. Pre-recorded Group Presentations (20%) • You can make the video however you like, so long as it can be easily accessed without specialist software. • One suggestion for videos is to directly do the recording in PPT with your webcam. • Students can prepare their parts separately and then put them together in 1 video. • The following link has a tutorial on how to do this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8JV3w4TOVw&t=309s • If you are asking previous students how to do this, please note that their videos were much longer than yours are required to be. Group Debates (15%) • Your group will be scheduled for two debates during the course. • Your topic will be assigned to you prior so that you can prepare. • Each team will assign 3 members for each debate, but all group members must help the team prepare. • For each debating session, two (2) pairs of teams will take turn to debate with each other on given topics in front of the class. • Each group will have a chance to be the Affirmative, and the Negative. • Each debater will present for 2-3 minutes, so a total of 6-9 minutes total per group. Tranh luận là gì? How does a debate work? Example Topic: Managers should ignore emotions when making decisions. First Affirmative: Introduces team, explains why they agree, outline their case. First Negative: Introduces team, explain why they disagree, outline their case. Second Affirmative: Gives further evidence why they agree, argues against Negative Teams reason (rebuttal). Second Negative: Gives further evidence why they disagree, argues against Affirmative Teams reason (rebuttal). Third Affirmative: Summarizes Affirmative Teams case, argues against Negative Teams case, final summary. Third Negative: Summarizes Negative Teams case, argues against Affirmative Teams case, final summary. End. Final Exam (50%) • The final exam will be open book, including hard copies of all materials. • Students will be required to apply the theory of the course to resolve given case studies. • 90 – 120 minutes (TBC) • Week 14 (TBC) • More detailed information will be provided. Note: To successfully complete this course, students must: ▪ Achieve a minimum of 50 marks; ▪ Attend 80 per cent of class time. Group Formation • In later courses you may be able to form your own groups, however in earlier courses like Principles of Management we will assign your groups. • This is to simulate the real world experience, where you may not be able to choose groups at your future work places. • You may not like your group members and they may not like you! • A part of the learning experience is to learn to behave in a professional manner, whether you like the circumstances or not. • I will do everything that I can NOT to change the groups, so you must do everything you can to make sure that your group works as a good team. • 35% of your results depends on your group, so work well and be nice. • Groups are shown in the following slides, but be careful to check if you are either Group 4 (Friday 8am) or Group 5 (Friday 12pm). Please note your group members and their contact details. • We suggest you establish an agreed method of communication (WhattsApp, etc.) Group Formation – 8am Class, Friday 1 1 1 1 1
