Guided Reading During Reading Pre-reading 1. Survey = quick look – title, pictures, first page, blurb on back, author 2. Make Predictions = guess what it is about, “Will I like it?”, “Will it fulfill my purpose?” 3. Set A Purpose = “Why am I reading?”, (what for?), ”What type of material is this?, “What is the material about?” a. enjoyment, to learn (life, work/school, interest) b. see if predictions were correct c. complete a task 4. Use Reading Magic = for a unknown word a. skip the word b. read the rest of the sentence c. look at the first letters of the word d. look at prefix or suffix e. think of a word that makes sense that starts with those letters f. try that word in the sentence g. does it make sense? My mom can’t read books with her old glasses. She will buy some bifocals so she can read better. 5. Make Pictures in Your Mind = read small sections at a time, what is being described? Post-reading 6. Ask Yourself Questions = what did I just read?, do I understand it, do I need to reread?, what will happen in the next section/chapter? 7. Reflect = did it answer my questions?, did it meet my needs?, did I enjoy it?, was it interesting?, did the author do a good job? 8. Summarize = retell in your own words, retell the main idea and some supporting ideas 9. Analyze = ask yourself why, make observations and judgments
