* Look at the cover of the book (title and picture) and predict what
the story might be about. Make more predictions as you read.
* Use the pictures to help understand what the words are saying.
* Use the pictures to get more information. Sometimes the illustrator
gives us clues that the author didn’t tell us.
* Self-correct as you read. If you make a mistake, go back and reread
the sentence. If what you read didn’t make sense, go back and reread
the sentence.
* Use expression when you read.
- Change your voice when you see capital letters (READ), bold
letters (READ), or words that are in italics (read).
- Change your voice when you see an exclamation mark ( ! ).
- Change your voice when you see a question mark ( ? ).
* Read the words smoothly, not choppy.
* If you get stuck on a word:
- Look for word endings (ing, ed, & s)
- Look for digraphs (sh & th – together the two letters make
a new sound).
- Look for clusters (st & sm – you say both letter sounds).
- Look for words in words.
* After you have read the story, think about the order in which things
happened. Can you retell the story?
