Biographical Note
William Ogden McCagg, Jr. was a historian, educator, and author of two pioneering Englishlanguage books on Austro-Hungarian Jewry. He was also responsible for a variety of
publications dealing with Eastern European Communism, the Soviet Union, ethnic minorities,
and the disabled, and appeared in two videos on deafness.
Born June 16, 1930, in New York, NY, McCagg attended school in New England, where he
learned French and German and developed a long-distance romance with Prague (via Baedeker).
Later he attended Harvard University, added Italian to his repertoire and earned a BA in French
History and Literature in 1952. During the next few years he spent time in Monterey, California
(learning Czech in his spare time), Frankfurt, and Vienna, where he met his first Hungarians in
November 1956.
McCagg then returned to New York for graduate work at Columbia University, learned Magyar
(Hungarian) and earned an MA in East European History in 1960. During this period he also met
and married sculptor Louise D. Heublein. A Ford Foundation dissertation grant from 1960-62
enabled McCagg to conduct research in Munich, where he studied and wrote about Hungarian
Communism. After a short stint as a social sciences instructor at Fairleigh Dickinson University,
he joined the history faculty at Michigan State University (MSU). McCagg received his PhD
from Columbia in 1965 and ultimately became Director of MSU’s Russian and East European
Program.
In addition to his teaching duties, during the next three decades McCagg made frequent research
trips to Europe, and occasionally beyond: Budapest (1966-67, 1980s), Vienna (1971-72, 1976,
1980s), Jerusalem (1976), Paris (1978), and Zagreb, Warsaw, Prague, Berlin, and Hamburg (all
1988-89). He authored several journal articles, contributed chapters to several books, and
regularly attended and delivered papers at meetings of the American Association for the
Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS).
McCagg’s ground-breaking book, Jewish Nobles and Geniuses in Modern Hungary, was
published in 1972, followed by Stalin Embattled in 1978 and A History of Habsburg Jews, 16701918 in 1989. Habsburg Jews won an award from the University of Minnesota Center for
Austrian Studies as the best book in the field of Austrian studies in the period January 1, 1988, to
May 1, 1989. It was also nominated for a National Jewish Book Award in 1990. A Hungarian
translation of Habsburg Jews was published in 1992, followed by a French translation in 1996.
In his later years McCagg suffered from progressive deafness and devoted increasing attention to
issues affecting people with disabilities. He co-edited The Disabled in the Soviet Union (1989),
gave a presentation at the International Conference on Deaf History (1991), and produced and
appeared in Ben’s Bridge, a 1992 film about deafness (Lansing, MI: The Message Makers).
William Ogden McCagg, Jr., died of colon cancer on June 8, 1993, at his home in Stonington,
CT. The Center for European and Russian Studies at Michigan State University currently
administers the William McCagg Memorial Paper Contest, making annual awards to graduate
and undergraduate students.

Scope and Content Note
The collection documents the research and publications of William Ogden McCagg, Jr. (19301993), a historian and educator who focused on Austro-Hungarian Jewry, Communism and Cold
War politics in Hungary and the Soviet Union, and the treatment of the disabled, Gypsies
(Roma), and other minorities in Central and Eastern Europe. The collection spans the period
1960-1993 and comprises research notes, index cards, correspondence, clippings, reprints, and
copies of publications, unpublished manuscripts, and archival source materials. English,
German, and Hungarian are the predominant languages in the collection, with much smaller
amounts of material in French, Czech, Spanish, and Italian.
Research notes on published sources, photocopied articles, and approximately 12,000 index cards
with bibliographical and biographical data on prominent Austro-Hungarian Jews make up the
bulk of the collection. These materials were the basis for two monographs (Jewish Nobles and
Geniuses in Modern Hungary and A History of Habsburg Jews, 1670-1918), a dozen journal
articles and book chapters, and several unpublished papers delivered at professional conferences.

Arrangement
On behalf of the YIVO Library and Archives, Zachary M. Baker, Head Librarian, wrote to the
donor, Louise McCagg, acknowledging receipt of 10 cartons of Judaica books plus 4 cartons and
19 archival boxes of research notes, reprints, and photocopies, on June 16, 1994. The Judaica
books were added to the Library’s collection. Accessioning Archivist Leo Greenbaum unpacked
the remaining materials in May 1995, placing loose papers in acid-free folders and maintaining
original order among the folders to the extent feasible. Cardboard file boxes filled with index
cards were placed in acid-free cartons. Robert Friedman arranged, re-housed, and described the
collection in June 2002.
Series I, Subseries A, Series II, Subseries A, Series III, and Series IV consist of research notes
and correspondence, in general arranged alphabetically by topic. Original folders and folder
titles were retained when available (approximately 75% of the collection). Original order was
maintained within each folder.
Series I, Subseries B, and Series II, Subseries B consist of 2"x3", 3”x5”, and 4”x6” index cards,
divided into sections within each folder and arranged in their original order. Only some of the
sections had original labels. The cards are arranged alphabetically within each section.

active in Hungarian economic, political, and scientific affairs from the early 19th century through
1940. The majority concern individuals who were ennobled and/or converted Jews. The types of
information recorded on each card include: surname(s), given name(s), place and year of birth,
place of residence or address, place and year of death, date of ennoblement, title, occupation,
education, industry sector, firm name, and listings in various publications. If the surname was
changed at some point, the card indicates both the earlier Germanized "Jewish" surname and the
later Magyarized name. These cards are generally interfiled according to the Hungarian surname.
Arrangement:
Subseries A consists of research notes and correspondence, in general arranged alphabetically by
