1.3 The Structure (a particular arrangement of parts) and shape of the Earth The Earth could be compared to an onion which has many layers. This can be seen in figure 1.9. The outer layer of the Earth is what we live on. It is called the Crust (the hard outer surface layer of bread or pie). Just like the outer surface of a loaf (an amount of bread that has been shaped in one piece) of bread which is also called the crust. On the crust, there is land and water. Crust, Mantle (the part of the Earth below the crust and surrounding the core), Outer Core, Inner Core (the central part of an object, or the most important part of sth). In the past, people believed that the Earth was flat. Therefore, they were afraid to travel to distant lands. They thought if they travelled too far, they would reach the End of the Earth and fall off it. However, this is incorrect. The Earth is Circular (shape like a circle, round) in shape. A Portuguese born voyager (a person goes on a long journey, especially by ship to unknown places), who worked for Spain, Called Ferdinand Magellan proved that Earth is round.
