SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
1. Using your knowledge of US history and evidence/examples/facts, explain how the United States
entered World War I based on:
A. Militarism
B. Alliances
C. Imperialism
D. Nationalism
A: we entered world war one to test our military and see how strong we were compared to
other nations. At the turn of the century our military was still developing so U.S high command
though that the war would be a good opportunity to test our strength.
B: America was allies with Britain and France. These relationships played a major role in the
decision to enter the war. We joined the war to better support our allies and to protect
international interests in those allied nations
C: imperialism played a role in our decision to join the war. the land lease act is evidence of this.
This act stated that European countries like France and Britain would give us land in exchange
for financial support. This was a form of participation that directly stemmed from the U.S’s
imperialist nature.
D: We also joined the war because we wanted to prove our greatness to other countries. Like
most participants in WW1 America wanted to participate to become the victor and to take the
proverbial “top spot” among nations. Also the U.S wanted to join the war as the allies “savior”
and be seen as the trump card for their forces
2. Explain how Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal was able to help get the United
States out of the Great Depression during the interwar period.
The new deal started a host of government projects like the hoover damn. These projects
generated jobs for the large amount of unemployed americans. This led to people having more
spending money in their pokets which led to healthier businesses. The trend eventually helped
set the stock market on a path for recovery. The new deal didn’t completely solve the problems
of the great depression, instead it set the U.S up for the explosive period of growth that would
happen after WWII
3. How was the 1920’s viewed as the “original YOLO”? There are multiple factors and events we
discussed in class. Choose three and explain the cause and effect on the culture of the 1920s.
Use specific examples and details to support your answer.
People in the 1920s were inclined to live extravagantly because it was a reaction to the trauma
of the previous decade. It was said that most men who returned from WWI never though that
they were going to survive in the first place. because of this a lot of them decided to live life like
they were going to die tomorrow. Evidence of this is shown through the extravagant parties,
consumerism, and progressiveness that defined the 1920’s. another factor is prohibition, which
led to a sharp increase in organized crime. This increase helped create that feeling of “YOLO”
because people had to rely on the mafia and smugglers for liquor. Finally the uncertainty in
Europe contributed to the feeling of “yolo” in the united states. This because people didn’t
know if a another war was going to break out in the aftermath of the previous one. So, people
decide to enjoy life to fullest just incase that period of relative peace ended
