Disposal of unused controlled substance medication
Feedback from law enforcement and community programs
West Sacramento Police Department
 If someone has prescription medication they want to have disposed of, they can bring
it by the police Department at anytime, pick up the red phone in the lobby and explain
to dispatch they have medication for disposal. A Community Service Officer or Police
Officer will be dispatched to collect the medication.
 The Police Department may do another Saturday collection event. They will let us
know.
West Sacramento Fire Department
 Yolo County can schedule a pick up of hazardous waste for seniors (but not controlled
substance waste)
 Package according to their instructions and deliver to Yolo County.
West Sacramento Waste Management
 Yolo County central landfill accepts non-controlled substances and has mail-back
envelopes they hand to residents to take to a disposal facility.
 Don't Rush to Flush (national program) . What cannot go in Don’t Rush to Flush bins?
Controlled prescriptions, Dietary Supplements, Vitamins, Business waste (e.g. Clinics,
Doctor’s & Dentist’s offices, Veterinarians). The nearest location is the Yolo County
Landfill in Woodland
Yolo County Sheriff
 Bring unused controlled substance to the front office in Woodland in a paper bag. They
will take your name, address and phone number. If you bring it in for several friends,
they need the same information for each person.
Local pharmacies
 Do not generally accept controlled substance waste
 Individual pharmacies may or may not accept controlled substance waste from own
customers.
Yolo County Landfill

 Has a new program. Will send bags to organizations to give to people who want to
deliver or mail their unused controlled medications.
 Working on funding to bring kiosks to local police stations to provide drop-off locations
for these substances. Funding will not be available until July 1.
 It will be helpful to hear from the public about the need to have controlled substance
disposal locations available locally.
