Function/features Define and give characteristics/ features/ structures Three Protections of the central nervous system: Meninges •The primary function of the meninges and of the cerebrospinal fluid is to protect the central nervous system. The pia mater is the meningeal envelope that firmly adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) •While the primary function of CSF is to cushion the brain within the skull and serve as a shock absorber for the central nervous system, CSF also circulates nutrients and chemicals filtered from the blood and removes waste products from the brain. Blood-brain barrier The BBB has several important functions: Protects the brain from "foreign substances" in the blood that may injure the brain. Protects the brain from hormones and neurotransmitters in the rest of the body. Maintains a constant environment for the brain.
