Dan So, did you meet Mark, the new guy?
Steve No, not yet. I was sick last week, remember?
Dan Oh, that’s right. Well, you have to meet him. I think you two will have lots to talk about. For one, he is a
football fan, too.
Steve I like him already! So, what does he look like?
Dan He is a big guy, tall and very muscular. He likes going to the gym a lot.
SteveOh, now that you mention it, there was a new man at the gym the other day. He was tall and fit, too. Do you
think it’s him?
Dan Maybe. He did say his gym is near here.
Steve And what is he like?
Dan He is really outgoing and confident, and fun to be with. Everybody instantly liked him.
Steve He sounds nice. I am looking forward to meeting him. Where is he today?
Dan He is in Mr Brown’s office. They are discussing a new assignment.
Steve Oh, right. Say, how about going for lunch later? We can invite Mark, too and get to know him better.
Dan That’s a great idea!

Listening transcript
Vic Eric, when did you get back?
Eric I got home this morning but I feel like I’m still in Paris.
Vic I’m sure you do. So tell me. You were there for the whole summer. How was it?
Eric Oh, it was great. Actually, I stayed there for about two months. It wasn’t very long but still, it was amazing.
Vic You stayed with a French family, right? What were they like?
EricThey were very nice. It was my second time in Paris, so I didn’t want to visit the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre again.
This time they took me to places that aren’t as well-known, and it was great. I saw how French people really
spend their time.
Vic Wow, that sounds like fun! Did you eat many different kinds of French food?
Eric Oh yes. The family I stayed with cooked for me every day. We also went to a few really nice restaurants.
Vic How nice! I’d like to visit France, too.
Eric I’d like to go again, but not during the summer.
Vic Well, my problem isn’t the time of the year, but the language. I don’t speak French very well!
EricCome on! You can learn there!

Man 1
Excuse me, I’m a bit lost, can you please help me?
Man 2
Of course. Where do you need to go?
Man 1Well... I’m not really sure. There are a lot of different numbers on my boarding card. I don’t know which one
is my gate number. Is it 8B?
Man 2
Let me have a look. Well, 8B is your seat number. Your gate number is 7G.
Man 1
Oh, thank you! Could you please tell me where that gate is?
Man 2
Yes, turn left here and you’ll see it. It’s only a few minutes away, so don’t worry, you don’t need to hurry. You
even have time to eat or drink something.
Man 1
That’s good. I wanted to get some coffee before boarding.
Man 2
Ah, well then you should go to the Airmiles Café. It’s right before your gate, actually.
Man 1
Excellent! Do they have good coffee there?
Man 2Oh yes, the best here! My colleagues and I get our coffee there every morning. But remember you have to
drink it before boarding. You can’t take it with you on the plane. Oh, and a word of advice. Don’t try their
doughnuts, they’re horrible!
Man 1
Oh, all right. Thank you so much for your help!

Ken
So what do you think, son? What’s the most important invention in the last 100 years?
MarkI don’t know, Dad. I’d say something like the aeroplane, or the car... We can travel so much faster now using
these means of transport!
KenThat’s true, I guess. But I think that there are more important things like computers and phones. Especially
mobiles, right? I never see you without your mobile. You can’t live without it!
MarkThat’s not true! In fact, we’re going camping this weekend, remember? I’m not taking my mobile with me. It
will be easy. I don’t think I’ll have a problem at all without it.
KenOK, and I will try not to use my computer. The first thing I do when I get home is turn it on and check my
e-mails. Well, maybe we could both spend some time away from our favourite gadgets.
Mark Yes, no mobiles or laptops for a weekend!

Ian
What else do we need to do before we leave, John?
John Oh, I don’t know. I think we just need to find a nice hotel to stay in.
Ian
That’s easy, I can do that.
John Wait, I just hope it’s not going to be like last time...
Ian
What do you mean? The hotel last time was fine. You were unhappy because they didn’t have Wi-Fi.
John Of course I wasn’t happy. I need to be able to get online!
Ian Why? It’s a holiday! Why do you need to use a computer on your holiday?
John Well, I do. And I think we need a place with a nice pool, too.
Ian
Why do you want a pool? We’re going to be on the beach. You can swim in the sea!
John T
he sea is dirty, though. And think of all the fish and other sea creatures in it. Do you really want to swim in
that?
Ian
Don’t be silly, there’s nothing wrong with swimming in the sea.
John Still, I prefer a pool. And room service. I hope they have good room service.
Ian
A
re we going to use the room service? I thought we’d be able to try the local restaurants. They are known for
their great food.
John Look, I’m sure it’s fine, but I want to be able to eat in the room once or twice a day.
Ian
Once or twice a day? Do you plan on leaving the hotel room at all?
John Of course. When I go to the pool.
Ian
This is going to be a wonderful holiday... (sarcastic)
