Blake Davis 9/17/19 English 12 Gold 2 Marriage non-fiction responses Secret Behind Success of Arranged Marriages I find the information in the article fascinating about divorce rates when comparing one country without arranged marriages to one that has arranged marriages. Although the story of Kanubhai and Madhu’s arranged marriage worked out for them doesn’t mean that’s how the majority of arranged marriages are in India. There may be a 1.1% divorce marriage rate in India but those are the divorces that actually get reported, who knows how many marriages aren’t going well. I’m sure the real number isn’t as bad as the US’s divorce rate of 45 to 50% but I doubt India’s being 1.1%. As for why these unhappy marriages might go unreported its because of the tradition bound to marriage throughout the generations and how people don’t want to go against tradition. Arranged Marriages Spell Disaster for Many Women This article overall shows the darker side of arranged marriages which is fairly common in arranged marriages. Most don’t turn out well like they did in the previous article and often result in mistreatment of the female or the children which ties back to traditional beliefs conflicting with more modern beliefs. You have arranged marriages that fall apart whether it be the man seeks other lovers or the man isn’t who they seem to be yet they still expect women to follow the traditions despite clearing being wronged both relationship wise and tradition wise. Often resulting in women losing their children, living in places they can’t be socially involved in, or are mistreated by their arranged husbands.
