Writing Activities
1. Write a letter to one of the main characters in the novel you read. Give advice, respond to
decisions he/she made, suggest alternative solutions to problems, etc.
2. Extend the story by adding a final chapter OR writing the first chapter of a sequel.
3. Write an auto/biography of one of the characters.
4. Write a letter to the author, critiquing the book…what you liked, didn’t like, what you would’ve
done differently.
5. Keep a diary, in first person, as one of the characters in your story might have.
6. If you read poetry, write an original poem, mimicking the style of poetry you read.
7. Complete each of these eight ideas based on the book you read: This book made me wish that...,
realize that..., decide that..., wonder about..., see that..., believe that ..., feel that..., and hope
that...
8. Write an acrostic poem(s), using the book’s title or characters’ names to complete brief phrases
that would be significant to the story.
9. Write a detailed book report/summary.
10. Make a test for your book. Include at least 5 true/false, 5 multiple choice, and 5 open response.

11. Make a new book jacket with an original cover illustration, inside “blurb”, back summary, and
inside back panel featuring “about the author”.
12. Take an event/incident in your book and turn it into the comic/graphic style genre.
13. Create a travel brochure, inviting guests to visit one of the settings in your story.
14. Draw a timeline that captures the main events of your story from beginning to end.
15. If the book you read involves a number of locations within a country or geographical area, design a
map. Make sure the map is large enough for us to see the areas clearly. Include a legend to your
map. Write a paragraph that explains the importance of each place on your map.
16. If your book involves a family or a group of close characters, illustrate a picture album, including
basic information about each.
Research
17. Choose any appropriate topic from your book that lends itself to research. Create a poster, a
report, a ppt., a prezi, etc., to share your research.
18. Find the top 10 websites a character in your book would visit. Include information on why your
character would visit these sites.
19. Prepare a biographical account of your book’s author.
20. Create a crossword puzzle of at least 10 important vocabulary words. Be prepared to explain the
reasons behind your choices.
