IMMIGRANTS AND URBAN CHALLENGES
1.a. Nativists were Americans who feared immigrants would take jobs and impose
their Roman Catholic beliefs on society.
1.b. They were similar in that both differed from the Anglo-Protestant "norms" of
the United States and faced a degree of hostility and alienation as a consequence.
They were different in that the Irish at least spoke English but on the other hand
were much more associated with Catholicism, the latter earning them the particular
enmity of nativists.
1.c. The rise of anti-immigrant groups in the US may lead to more hate filled
crimes.
2.a. Industrialization led to the growth of cities?
2.b. In growing cities people found entertainment and enriched cultural life.
Everything was becoming easy. Many enjoyed visiting clubs or attending in
concerts or lectures. In the 1800s, people also attended in urban theater. The
industrial growth gave peoples jobs.
3.a. Poorly built, overcrowded housing where many immigrants lived.
3.b. Essentially their growth was outstripping the ability of the technology of the
day to service those cities (water, lighting, sewerage etc.). As well, issues of
governance and policing had also not kept up with the physical growth.
3.c. There was little fire organized fire protection. Therefore, it might take longer
than expected to put out a fire.
