COMMUNICATION IS… • The process of exchanging thoughts, messages, or information between two or more people • It includes more than just words: How you say it – including tone of voice Why you say it – the intention behind the message When you say it – time of day or during an argument What you don’t say – Sometimes saying nothing can give a clear picture of what is going on • Your body language – facial expressions, gestures, and postures • • • • • We are always communicating TYPES OF COMMUNICATION: • Verbal – Anything using the spoken word • Written – includes letters, books, text, and is considered a form of verbal communication • Non-verbal – includes body language, gestures, eye contact, posture, dress, and symbols EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION • Need to understand the big picture • Involves understanding the emotion and the intentions behind the message • When you communicate effectively, you are more likely to have a successful outcome and less likely to have unnecessary conflict or stress.
