CHAPTER 3 CELLULAR REPRODUCTION SECTION 1: CELLULAR GROWTH CELL SIZE – SURFACE ARE AND VOLUME A cell cannot be too small. Why? Because it cannot contain organelles and needed molecules A cell cannot be too large (big) Why? Because it could not move enough materials across the membrane surface A cell needs to be a perfect size and for this to happen CELL GROWTH AND DIVISION must be coordinated. THE CELL CYCLE The cell cycle is when cells grow and divide Why do cells grow and divide? 1. Growth 2. Cell repair There are three stages of the cell cycle 1. Interphase In this stage, the cell grows and the prepares for cell division. The DNA makes copies of itself (DNA Replication) Interphase is the longest stage of the cell cycle Interphase is divided into three substages Gap 1 – This is the stage where the cell grows and prepares itself for DNA synthesis. S -Synthesis- This is the stage when the DNA makes a copy of itself Gap 2 – This is the stage where the cell grows and prepares itself for cell division 2. Mitosis – Cell Division What organelles are involved in cell division? The nucleus, where we find the chromosomes Centrioles where the spindle fibres are made Cell membrane Mitosis is divided into FIVE stages Stage 1: Prophase
