Lab: Molecular Geometry

Name ________________________________

Period _____ Date ____________________

Objectives: Build molecular compounds.

Procedure:

1.

Make the following structures with the marshmallows and toothpicks.

2.

For each molecule, choose one color of marshmallow for the central atom(s) and a second color of marshmallows for the surrounding atoms.

3.

Use the toothpicks for the bonds between the atoms. Arrange the atoms in the correct 3-D orientation they would exist in nature. Remember lone pairs of electrons may affect the overall shape of the molecule.

4.

Determine if the molecule is polar or nonpolar.

Analysis: Answer the following using complete sentences.

1.

Define the VSEPR theory and explain why water has a “bent” shape rather than a linear geometry.

2.

Which of the geometries have all atoms in the same plane?

3.

Did any of the molecules have double or triple bonds? Explain how you determined this.

4.

How can you determine the polarity of a molecule from its geometry?
