1.1 Where can you find us?
1. Who is Arc @ UNSW and What’s Our
Thing!
Arc is your student organisation! We are run by students, for
students, to help create the best experience possible for you
during your life at UNSW. Essentially Arc is you, we are YOU!
Through Arc you can get involved in campus activities, social
events, clubs and committees, Kudos gallery (your gallery,
just for students!), a range of publications and all of the other
things! If we don’t have your thing we’ll help you make it a
thing!
You can also enjoy parties! FREE lunches! Grant money for
creative projects, professional development opportunities
(the stuff you won’t learn in a classroom), employment,
representation, legal aid and advocacy and way more! To
add to all of these unreal and totally hot things membership
is FREE! Wait, what? Let’s just say that again; membership is
totally free!
This guide is full of information about all of Arc’s services
and facilities, as well as the ins and outs, nooks and crannies,
and hidden gems of the UNSW Art & Design campus.
The Arc office is located on the Ground floor of D-Block
at the back of the student lounge in DG21; entry via the
courtyard.
The space includes a kitchen with free tea and coffee,
lounges, dining areas, a meeting room and, of course, our
fabulous and friendly office!
We’re open Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm. You’re welcome to
drop in and ask us questions, get directions, book our van
or ute, sign up to volunteer, contribute to our publications,
get help filling in an application or dealing with academic or
legal issues, buy a cheap cup for free tea, coffee or filtered
water (the tap does sub zero temperatures; at least as close
as we can get), raise an issue with the Art & Design Student
Council, sign up or renew your Arc membership, to say hello
and have a chat or whatever!
We are always happy to answer any of your questions about
our activities, services, the campus and the university in
general.
Drop in and say hi, we can’t wait to hang with you peeps and
do all the things and stuff!

1.3 Because we’re fabulous!
UNSW Art & Design is a unique, diverse and fabulous
community; almost everyone here has a hand in some artistic
pursuit, or several. Your Arc @ UNSW Art & Design team
is made up of experienced and emerging artists, curators,
writers and theorists who are all fresh and excited to share
their skills with you! But wait, hold the phone! Amongst Art
& Design’s technical and professional staff there’s Archiblad
prizes finalists, Sulman prize finalists, record label owners
and design label owners. The majority of faculty staff
members also have their own artistic practices, so be sure to
get chatting to the people around you! UNSWAD is a melting
pot of creative talent - don’t let it slip through your fingers!
1.4 Our teamwerk game is strong.
How great are mates? How great are mates that, like, think
all the same things as you at the same time as you do? How
great are projects you can work on with your mates? UNSW
Art & Design has a history of producing great collectives
and collaborations such as the Kingpins, Claire Healy & Sean
Cordeiro, Brown Council, Ms&Mr, Soda_Jerk, Greedy Hen,
Province & loads more. Currently there are many collectives
on campus such as the Life Drawing Society and Make Club,
but you can also start your own! Here at Arc we believe v.
strongly in teamwork, and would love to help you work with
your mates to start something great.

What is Kudos
Gallery?
What is the White
Cube Program?
Kudos Gallery is a professional
exhibition space for artists, curators and
designers to explore and present their
work beyond the realm of the studio.
In 2015 Kudos Gallery is running a
brand new volunteer program. This new
program offers a lot more than what you
would usually expect when volunteering
at a gallery and will give you the handson skills they don’t teach you in class,
but you are expected to know when
you start your career. We want our
partipants to get as much as they can
out of their time, so we offer more
learning experiences and opportunities
to work directly in the gallery and with
the artists. The program aims to better
your marketing, installing, writing and
people skills as well as giving you
experience with bar and gallery minding.
From 1st Year to PhD, Kudos Gallery
offers a supportive environment for
students to showcase their ideas
and take risks whilst developing an
exhibition profile at university.
Since 1998, Kudos Gallery has been
host to some of Sydney’s most
exciting artists, curators and writers
and continues to be a fertile ground
for provocative concepts, innovative
technologies and cutting edge art forms
and styles.
For each volunteer, the program will only
run for a short period of time, as you will
be working closely with one exhibition

2.11 The Mural Project
Arc @ UNSW Art & Design in collaboration with the Faculty
support a current student or group of students to put a
‘stamp’ on the Paddington Courtyard twice a year via The
Mural Project. Artists are selected based on application to a
committee of current students and one academic member
of staff from the Faculty.
Following the success of the first few Mural Projects
awarded to BFA students Henry Curchod, William Nghiem,
and Bronwen Williams, supported by Eckersly’s, and MFA
candidate Jason Phu supported by The Art Scene, Arc @
UNSW invite students to bring us ideas for mural works
around campus.
We are looking for proposals to execute a new mural over
on of the existing 4, in a location of your choice.
In your proposal you should include a design of what you
want to do, the site, and as much of a mockup as possible.
The more details, the better!
The Mural Project is funded by Eckersly’s and The Art
Scene on campus.

5. Sydney Artist Run Initiatives (ARI’s)
Artist-run initiatives (or ARIs) are a great option for
emerging artists wishing to exhibit. ARIs allow artists,
predominantly ‘emerging’ artists who have not yet
broken into the commercial gallery circuit, a professional
exhibition playground to experiment, realise projects,
establish a profile and gain traction around their practice.
Many curators and commercial gallerists regularly attend
exhibitions at ARIs in order to track the development of
emerging artists. It is often through exhibiting at ARIs that
artists gain visibility and proceed to the next stage of their
careers, i.e exhibiting within the commercial gallery and
public institution circuit.
ARIs are, as the name suggests, run by practicing artists,
usually on a volunteer basis. Some are self-supported
while others receive grants and funding from a variety
of sponsors or the Government. To hold an exhibition,
interested artists are required to submit an exhibition
proposal. The proposal is assessed, often by a board of
directors or a selection committee. ARIs are great to get
involved with either through exhibiting or volunteering.
Here are a few ARIs close to UNSW Art & Design that you
should definitely check out!

6. Commercial Galleries
Commercial Galleries are an important part of the art world.
They are privately operated businesses that draw their profit
from the selling of art objects. Commercial Galleries usually
operate with a carefully selected stable of artists who they
‘represent’ and promote under contract. For the artists they
represent, a commercial gallery will usually stage regular
in-house exhibitions, produce catalogues and invitations,
maintain visual material for promotional purposes, archive
promotional activities as well as pursue ongoing sales and
exhibition opportunities outside the gallery. They will also
cultivate collectors
It is important to note that most artists in Australia will never
achieve representation by a commercial gallery; this is not a
marker of failure, though. There are various avenues through
which artists can engage, fund and present projects as well as
support their income.
Additionally, it is very rare that artists will enter the
commercial gallery exhibition circuit straight from ‘finishing’
art school. It usually takes time and the development of a
studio and business practice before commercial recognition is
achieved.

7. Public institutions
These are the various publically funded institutions within
close proximity of UNSW Art & Design. These places (typically)
function with a team of paid in-house curators who stage and
manage the exhibtion and public programs.
The Australian Commercial Galleries Association provides a
definition of public gallery institution. As defined in the rules
of the Public Galleries Association of Victoria (PGAV) a public
gallery is one ‘owned by or on behlaf of the public; is a properly
and legally constituted visual arts facility; is professionally and
permananently staffed; has and maintains an on-going and
regular program of exhibtions of visual arts material; is not-forprofit and does notengage in significant commercial activities;
and meets a clear and identified needs within its community’.
This defintion would generally include contemporary art spaces,
regional public galleries, state galleries and university galleries.
