Global Lead Operations and
Technology Partner
Each year I think about the different themes
we have worked with in the past and how we
can continue to raise the bar. This year, our
theme to help the hungry and underprivileged
individuals around the world really challenged
our teams to find unique organizations to collaborate with to
reach our goals. In our 8th year, we had individuals from nineteen
(19) countries, twenty-five (25) locations, and nearly four hundred
(400) volunteers around the globe. Our purpose has not changed;
whether we have one volunteer or one thousand volunteers—
we just want to make a difference in our communities.
This year, as one global team, we supported the hungry and
underprivileged through various food drives, fundraisers,
and supported distribution of goods in our respective
communities. I want to thank all the KPMG volunteers and
hope you had a good and fulfilling experience giving back to
our communities.
From packing surplus peaches for food
redistribution in New York’s City Harvest
Rescue Facility; to clay modeling and painting
with young children in one of Mumbai’s Mobile
Creches; to bicycling in Shanghai to raise funds for “One Egg a
Day” for meals for underprivileged children—I had the unique
opportunity to see our volunteer efforts in action literally around
the world. EVERYWHERE, I was overwhelmed by the genuine
interest, the personal generosity, and the amazing enthusiasm
exhibited by each and every one of our volunteers.
Best of all, each of these events—and all of the events which are
summarized in this booklet—were for a GREAT cause, and the
volunteer efforts will have an impact on young children that you
cannot fully understand at this point. This is what Jerry set out to
accomplish eight years ago on behalf of the KPMG IT team serving
Citibank, and to see it sustained in action is truly a gift. I am proud
to be part of the global KPMG network that steps up to support the
individual volunteer efforts of its employees and friends, and I was
humbled to have been a small part of this year’s global effort.
As you browse this document’s pictures, read the write-ups, and
reflect upon the team’s collective efforts, I hope you continue
to be inspired to give back and embody KPMG’s core value of
commitment to our communities.
We DO make a difference. THANK YOU!!
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
Jerry Jones

Another year and yet another great success that can only be achieved
with the help of our participating country team leads who contribute in
our monthly calls at all hours of the day, all around the globe—to discuss
and coordinate our yearly event. The amount of work and preparation that
goes into making this event a success can only be realized through the
ongoing commitment and dedication to the cause by putting community before self.
We continue to be extremely grateful for your continued support and are eagerly anticipating
next year’s event!

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Sydney, Australia
the doors opened of Newtown Mission, around 100 people went
through, lined up to get their food, went back to their tables to eat,
and came back for more rounds.
Newtown Mission is a congregation affiliated with the
Uniting Church of Australia. One of the fantastic services they
offer is to provide a hot (and free) meal to those less fortunate.
This is possible because of help from another great organization,
OzHarvest. OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue charity.
This means that they collect excess food from businesses and
deliver it, free of charge to charities such as Newtown Mission.
It was tiring but at the same time interesting to meet and talk
to the Newtown folks who came in to have some food. It was
definitely an eye-opening experience that a lot of people still go
hungry in a country like Australia, but I am glad I was able to assist
Newtown Mission in providing sustenance and nourishment even
just for that lunch time. The Newtown folks were all very thankful
and had really funny comments in light of their situation. Example
quotes from the folks we served include:
This year, eight volunteers from the Technology Risk & Assurance
team in Sydney, Australia participated in the Cooking for a Cause
event, by assisting the magnificent people at OzHarvest and
Newtown Mission.
We had a great time helping out. To start the day, we broke up into
teams to prepare for the soon to be arriving clients; sorting the
fresh produce into the storeroom and takeaway bags, making
sandwiches, and creating salads.
• ”Thank you so much for serving us this food,
I will remember you in my will”
• Saying this with a cheeky smile: “Can I have some of that meat,
I am not vegetarian today and thanks!”
Next was to meet and greet and serve the food and clean the
plates. All the while this was happening, we got a chance to have
a chat and mingle.
Definitely one of the most memorable Citigroup community
volunteer days I have attended!
Simmy: Working with OzHarvest and the Newtown Mission gave
us all a new perspective on how much commercial food waste
exists and an appreciation for how lucky we are to live in Australia
and have easy daily access to fresh and healthy produce. It was a
rewarding day learning how to sort, pack, and salvage food from
the local restaurants. It was a pleasure to work with the generous
Newtown Mission staff and contribute to making a positive impact
by serving hot food to hungry members of our local community.
The following are the reflections from the team:
Ian: It was quite a full day for all of us. The day started with the
team being introduced and briefed on the task at hand by the
OzHarvest representative and Newtown Mission team. We learned
all about what OzHarvest does and their task of sourcing food from
restaurants, corporations, and business and then providing this
excess food for the displaced, hungry, and less fortunate members
of the community. Newtown Mission assists OzHarvest with this
by providing free lunch and, at times, dinner, to the community in
Newtown.
Shaffeem: Surreal experience. Learned a valuable lesson on the
importance of humanity. It was amazing to see how OzHarvest,
together with Newtown Mission, uses leftover food and makes
delicious meals out of them to feed the homeless every day.
Humbled by the passion and enthusiasm shown by the OzHarvest
and Newtown Mission volunteers. Felt a sense of satisfaction
emotionally after helping to prepare, organize, and serve food to
people in need. Was so good to see that there are people in this
world who show genuine care for the less fortunate. Showed that
with a little effort, people can work with each other to make this
world a better place to live in.
The KPMG team was divided into groups to prepare for the lunch.
I was personally assigned to prepare the salad and fruits while
others were assigned to sort food from the storage and prepare
the sandwiches and main dishes. Once we had all prepared the
food and gathered all food parcels to give the Newtown folks, it
was then time for a break. After the break, we were assigned to
sections of the serving table before all the Newtown folks came
in. I was personally assigned to serve the meats, and the moment

Sinthu: Being involved in the “Cooking for a Cause” with
OzHarvest at Newtown Mission was a great opportunity to work
together as a team and give back to the community by preparing
and serving food to support those in poverty. It was eye-opening
learning about food waste and food insecurity as well as seeing the
amount of food that is donated to the church and would potentially
go to waste if there were not charities such as this to put the food
to good use. The most memorable part of the day was serving
tea and coffee to everyone at the mission and being able to get to
know them and hear their story.
Kalani: Volunteering with OzHarvest at the Newtown Mission
during the lunchtime service was a truly rewarding experience.
We got the chance to assist with the preparation of food and then
served food to those who came in during lunch time. We learned
that food that would otherwise go to waste could go such a long
way to feed those in need. Above all, it was great to get a chance
to greet and chat with those who came in for lunch.

Suji: I had a wonderful day helping in the kitchen and serving food
to the needy. Observing the dedication of the staff preparing/
sorting the leftover meals with care and in a hygienic manner was
inspiring. The staff were friendly, humorous, and their dedication
to the community was motivating. Overall, I had a wonderful
experience, and I was very glad and satisfied that I was able to take
part and help at least for the day.
Dylan: Helping out with OzHarvest and Newtown Mission was
certainly an eye-opening experience in regards to just how much
food would be wasted if it was not for these fantastic organizations
providing for the vulnerable. It was a great experience to be able
to help those less fortunate than myself by serving them some
great food cooked by the volunteers at the Mission and sourced by
OzHarvest, while chatting with them and learning all the while.

Toronto, Canada
KPMG Toronto lent a hand to FoodShare Toronto on
September 12, 2014 to support their daily program to alleviate
hunger across Toronto. FoodShare is a nonprofit organization
that works with communities and schools to deliver healthy food
and food education. It has various programs such as delivering
fresh affordable high-quality vegetables and fruits to surrounding
communities, food education to schools, community cooking
programs, and urban agricultural programs (e.g., composting).
Nikhil
KPMG also helped in making compost. Volunteers shoveled
wood chips and used a refiner to obtain a more refined particles.
The refined wood chips were combined with the organic waste to
help in producing good compost by absorbing excessive moisture.
At the end of the day, FoodShare Toronto was very grateful for the
time, effort, and donation by KPMG. Volunteers, on the other hand,
were also thankful for the great opportunity to serve the community.

Hong Kong, China
As part of KPMG’s Citi Global Community Service, a group of
11 volunteers from KPMG China’s Hong Kong office visited eight
solitary elders aged 65 to 90 on a Friday afternoon, coorganized
with the Society for Community Organization (SoCO).
SoCO, established in Hong Kong in 1972, is a nonprofit and
nongovernmental community organization which is committed
to building a caring, equal, and just society. Headquartered in
Sham Shui Po—an area in Hong Kong steeped in local culture and
history, but with a concentration of struggling elders living alone,
SoCO strives to help by staying in touch with those in need.
James
This year’s CSR activity in Hong Kong focused on caring for solitary
underprivileged elders. As the Mid Autumn Festival was drawing
near, not only did we visit with some daily necessities, we also gifted
some moon-cakes for the festivities. During our time together,
everyone delightedly shared their stories. It was heartwarming to
see our elders take such a keen interest in the development of the
younger generations. Everyone had a great time.
All in all, albeit in a very small way, the volunteers from KPMG
China were grateful for the opportunity to help those in need.
They also learned more about the important role played by
organizations like SoCO in providing support to the grassroots.
They are keen to participate in future CSR activities.

Shanghai, China
With the coordination of KPMG China’s CSR team, 16 colleagues
from Audit, Tax, and Advisory, together with their families and friends,
joined the KPMG first eco-cycling tour on September 20, 2014.
This event aimed at promoting the concept of healthy-living
and low-carbon lifestyle, and supporting the “One Egg Project”
initiated by Shanghai United Foundation.
KPMG colleagues gathered at Pudong Expo Avenue at 2:30 p.m., and
all members were wearing the united cycling suits specially designed
for KPMG. The whole cycling takes nearly three hours and more than
30 kilometers. Under the guidance of the professional cycling coaches
and the encouragement from teammates, all colleagues successfully
accomplished this challenge and a photo was taken in front of the
China Pavilion to capture this precious moment.
The registration fee for this event is 200 RMB/person. After the
cycling, many colleagues also voluntarily donated either online
or offline to support the “One Egg Project.” In total, we raised
RMB 6,250 for the underprivileged youth in rural China. In the
future, we plan to organized more of such events and make our
own contribution to Chinese public welfare undertakings.

in the metropolitan area. Escazú contains many apartment blocks and
residential areas. It is located 7.5 miles (12 km) from San José and just
3 miles (5 km) west of Sabana Park in the capital city. San José has
many beautiful theatres, many with European-inspired architecture.
These buildings serve as the city’s main tourist attractions, not only
because of the architectural beauty, but because of the numerous
cultural, musical, and artistic presentations and activities, which
include traditional and modern Costa Rican and San José culture.
On Thursday, September 11, 2014, for the first time, KPMG in
Costa Rica worked with local Food Banking, which plays a critical
role in delivering food to those who need it most.
Food banking systems capture surplus food and deliver it to
the people who need it most and engage all sectors of society
in the process.
In Costa Rica, 350,000 people do not have enough income to
afford their basic market basket.
About Costa Rica
The Bank of food is managed by about 5 people who are direct
employees and clearly are not enough for all the things they must
do, so volunteer service is always a big help for them.
Our Community Service Day took place with the participation of
a team of 28 volunteers made up of members from all the areas
and all levels of KPMG in Costa Rica. The team divided itself
into groups that gave support in classifying products by type
and weight.

Costa Rica is located on the Central American isthmus. It borders
the Caribbean Sea (to the east) and the Pacific Ocean (to the west).
Costa Rica also borders Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the
South-Southeast. The highest point in the country is Cerro Chirripó;
at 12,530 ft, it is the fifth highest peak in Central America.
Costa Rica also comprises several islands. Cocos Island
(24 square kilometers /9.3 square miles) stands out because
of its distance from continental landmass. Over 25 percent of
Costa Rica’s national territory is protected by SINAC (the National

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Chennai, India
Volunteers from KPMG in India’s Chennai office participated in its
annual Global Citi ITA Team Community Service Day on the theme
“Hunger/helping the underprivileged.” The activity happened in
Pudhupattinam on the outskirts of Chennai near the Kalpakkam
nuclear plant, where KPMG, along with HOPE foundation, have built
a school. On September 13 at around 10:30 a.m., the day started off
by watching a presentation made by the HOPE foundation and school
representatives on the various activities conducted in the recent past.
This was followed by visiting the identified snake-charmer
community in Pudupattinam, which is a poverty stricken
community. Volunteers from the Chennai office performed the
following activities:
• We explained to the children how important sanitation is,
to keep oneself clean, and to wash hands before eating.
• We had a nurse from the HOPE school along with us who cut
the nails of all the children and explain to them why they should
cut their nails regularly.
• We distributed food packets and snacks to around 50 children
and adults during lunch, and they enjoyed the meal.
• We distributed detergent soaps to them for washing their
clothes clean and taught them that it is not hygienic to wear
soiled clothes.
• We finally bid goodbye to everyone in this community and
returned back to office by 5:00 p.m.

Eight volunteers from the IT Advisory team in Gurgaon spent
some time with the children at Vidya School, Gurgaon, which helps
the underprivileged children of the villages nearby by providing
education facilities and their grooming needs apart from the
nutrition program which is carried out for the midday meals of
children. The team reached the venue and took a trip around the
school to take a note of the welfare activities that are being carried
out, like bus facilities for children and setting up a computer lab,
which were sponsored by KPMG. Then the team arrived in a hall
where the children from classes five, six, and seven have gathered
to participate in the collage-making competition on the theme
“India Shining.” We interacted with the children and divided them
into groups, and one volunteer from our team tagged along with
the children to help them bring their ideas to life. The team gelled
with the children and it was fun for kids talking with the team.
Finally the prizes were distributed to the winners. It was a fun
activity for the team to know and interact with the underprivileged
children at the grass-root level.

As an annual practice, 16 members from KPMG in India’s
Mumbai office ITA family went to Mumbai Mobile Creches in
Powai, Mumbai to support the cause of “Hunger/Helping the
Underprivileged.” Volunteers reached the venue at 9:30 a.m.,
which was followed by a short and quick briefing. The team then
got engrossed with the kids, with a number of activities. The team,
with the kids, did clay modelling. The kids showed their creativity
and came up with beautiful designs and architecture. After this,
the kids were taught to make OHP paintings and the KPMG
team members assisted the kids. This activity was followed by
lunch, where the kids were served with their favorite egg biryani.
The kids had their lunch with utmost happiness. The lunch was
sponsored by KPMG. The kids were also provided with the
evening snacks goodie bag that consisted of multiple food items
like biscuits, juice, wafers, and chocolates. The team then spent
some more time with the kids and concluded for the day. It was
a day well spent with the kids, and the purpose made the activity
very meaningful.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Indonesia
Citi ITA Global Community Day 2014
In many ways, Indonesia is the land of plenty. But for some people
in Indonesia, hunger is a very real struggle. Many people believe that
the problem of hunger and poverty are confined to certain members
of society who are not employed and lazy. But the reality is different.
Most of these people did not have the necessary skills to enter the
work force, and only education can help them in the long term.
There are many causes as to why children from less fortunate
families do not attend schools (e.g., lack of funds, not able to
pay school tuition, and/or do not have the proper attire/school
uniform). Thus, in line with KPMG in Indonesia’s CSR program
“Together We Care,” KPMG MC/RC plan to sponsor 250 primary
school student uniforms. In this project, we will work together
with Yayasan Kechara Indonesia who will sponsor the food
distribution for that day in line with the theme – “Hunger and helping
underprivileged people.” Together, KPMG and Kechara Indonesia
collected more than IDR 25 Mio (equivalent to 2,500 USD) to
purchase 500 rice packages and 250 packages of school uniforms
for kids.
On the day, the representative of Kechara and the KPMG
volunteers departed from Kechara office at 8.00 a.m. to the venue.
After arriving the destination point, we were greeted by the head of
the early children education facility. The children were gathered in a
small hall and they sang, played, and prayed for a short period of time.
After that, the event was continued by a symbolic
handover of Kechara certificate to PAUD in Kota Bambu
by Mrs. Valentina Suhendra as a representative from Kechara
and Mrs. Tohana Widjaja as a representative from KPMG in
Indonesia. After the symbolic handover, KPMG volunteers were
divided into groups to distribute the uniforms and rice boxes
to 250 kids. It was a very hot day, but everyone was
happy and enjoyed the event.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Dublin, Ireland
We helped prepare breakfast and afternoon meals at the following
center https://www.mqi.ie/, which provides services for people
experiencing homelessness and drug addiction. In total, 16 people
volunteered from Advisory and FS Audit, giving their time in
separate shifts over four days (from 7.00 a.m. to about 4.30 p.m.)
on September first, second, third, and fifth. We also donated €500
towards the cost of ingredients for the special menu items (such
as coddle in lieu of soup/sandwiches) that can only be prepared
when supported by additional donations (as opposed to regular
budgeted funding).
We received the following message from the Fundraising and
Marketing Officer at the center where we assisted after the first day:
“I’m just back from seeing Phil and Shay [the chefs we assisted]
and the Coddle that they prepared and served today was a massive
hit with the clients! It means a huge amount to our clients that you
and your volunteers have given up your time to give them a hot
meal, and the staff said the volunteers have been brilliant so far and
the clients have LOVED their food, so thank you all so so much!”

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Tokyo, Japan
KPMG in Japan participated in the 2014 Global Citi ITAS Team
Community Service event on October 18, 2014, visiting the
St. Francis Orphanage located in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
The team consisted of nine volunteers from the Tokyo office as
well as alumni of KPMG and spent the afternoon with the children
at the orphanage. For this year’s event, approximately 20 children
attended the event with us.
After arriving at the orphanage, the KPMG volunteers and children
began the event by standing in a circle and introducing themselves
by saying their name and something they like. Soccer was a very
popular answer among the boys.
Both our KPMG volunteers and the children seemed to enjoy the
event this year. After the event, the KPMG office received a thank
you message from the orphanage and some very positive feedback
from the children.
We can close this year’s event with another successful check mark!
The KPMG members participated in various games and activities,
including a special cookie decoration event in which each child got
to decorate his or her cookie with very imaginative designs. In other
events, the KPMG members played games such as Simon Says and
Musical Chairs; the latter was a very competitive event.
One of our team members from KPMG China’s Shanghai office
played a drawing game with the children where she would describe
a body extremity and the kids would draw their version of it.
The end result turned out to be very colorful and creative among the
kids whom were split into four groups.
During the course of the event, we utilized English as the primary
language to give the children some exposure to using English in
a functional manner. Some of the children had very good English
skills, which surprised some of our volunteers.
KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
To finalize the event, KPMG volunteers arranged a pizza party in
which six pizzas were delivered just before the end of the event.
In a very short time, those six pizzas were devoured by some very
hungry children after a very eventful afternoon.

On Thursday, December 18 and Friday, December 19, 2014, we
met up at the Bonnevoie Cultural Center for assisting with the
Christmas party event that served meals for 350 underprivileged
people and distributed presents to kids. Our team was split in two:
one team helped on Thursday morning with the organization and
decoration of the cultural center and the dressing up of the tables;
the second team helped on Friday morning to tidy up the room.
The event was a gathering of underprivileged people who are
socially vulnerable and might not have anybody to spend Christmas
with. Participants were warmly welcomed by the members of the
association and all the volunteers and were able to enjoy a tasty
lunch and received gift bags with presents for kids.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Malaysia
Armed with the Global KPMG 2014 mission—“Utilizing our global
outreach to help the hungry and underprivileged individuals around
the world”—KPMG in Malaysia’s Management Consulting (MC)
department succeeded in organizing a successful CSR initiative.
This year’s CSR initiative included a fundraising element and
volunteering at a local soup kitchen. The team collaborated with
a local NGO, Fungates Superflow Foundation (FSF), to leverage
their knowledge and credibility in initiatives such as these. FSF has
been doing this for years and have a dedicated center aptly called
Soup Kitchen to feed at least 350 individuals from Monday to
Saturday. Those who seek the comfort of the Soup Kitchen include
drug addicts, jobless youths, disabled individuals, homeless, and
senior citizens. There is no form of discrimination as anyone who
requires a meal is welcomed to enjoy a meal at the Soup Kitchen.
Apart from just serving up a sumptuous meal, the foundation
also arranges for medical services, to ensure that those who are
underprivileged are being taken care of.
In preparation for the CSR initiative, a week-long donation
drive was initiated here at KPMG. The response was very well
received and a total of RM 3,110 was collected and donated to
Fungates Superflow Foundation.
Armed with enthusiasm, the strong team of 27 KPMG employees
headed to Jinjang on June 28, 2014 (Saturday). The unity and
teamwork shown by these 30 individuals were outstanding
as everyone shared the work and partook in various tasks.
From cutting of vegetables to washing the dishes to serving food
to mingling with those who walked in to Soup Kitchen, the team
proved their selflessness.
This CSR campaign proved to be an enriching experience for all
those who participated. The team was able to gain some insights
into the plight of this underprivileged community. A big thank you
to everyone to donated and/or gave up their Saturday to feed the
underprivileged.

“We believe by doing our part by touching people’s lives through
our community service initiatives, we can make a difference!”
To share more information with you on this CSR, we incorporated it with our department trip, and there are more than 50 volunteers that
participated in this meaningful event in Malaysia (Malacca). We organized games to entertain the less privileged, packed gift packs for them as
presents to each beneficiary, and donated daily essentials (sugar, rice, exercise equipment, oil, etc…) to the beneficiaries. For more details on this,
please wait for our write-up that we had submitted for management’s review.

RGM&Co. builds happiness in children’s hearts
On September 12, 2014, 30 volunteers from KPMG in the Philippines
brought the happiness and smiles back to over 40 children of
Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines, Inc. (OBFP).
OBFP is a nonstock, nonprofit organization which works to fight
hunger, disease, unemployment, illiteracy, and abuse—one family,
one community at a time. The worldwide mission of Operation
Blessing International is to demonstrate God’s love by alleviating
the plight of those in great need by feeding the hungry and caring
for the weak.
The objective of the activity is to alleviate the hunger and help the
underprivileged children. To attain that objective, we have set a
fun-filled activity with a Jollibee wonderland-inspired theme for
the chosen children of OBFP. The activities were simultaneously
held up north at Jollibee Anonas, Quezon City and down south at
Jollibee San Pedro Town Center, San Pedro, Laguna.
The children welcomed us with bright and priceless smiles on
their faces. The group organized a lot of activities like various
games, fun dance and song numbers from volunteers, and an
arts and crafts class which proved each one’s creativity and talent.
Lots of prizes and special gifts completed the event.
All the volunteers felt blessed to have the opportunity to simply
have fun with the kids and impart a cheerful experience with them.
These remarkable moments of happiness will surely be built in the
children’s hearts as they continue to look forward to their future
with much hope and faith.
We thank everyone who donated and volunteered for the kindness
and generosity shared with the children and to the OBFP. It was
indeed a fun and fulfilling day!

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Mexico City, Mexico
Day of caring
The learning
As part of KPMG in Mexico’s commitment to promoting social
responsibility initiatives, our IT Advisory team, in support of
the Citibank Audit conducted worldwide, has given one day
of service to our community, providing a plantation field for a
nutrition-sensitive agriculture to fight malnutrition.
Children weakened by all forms of malnutrition often die from
diseases that are both preventable and easy to treat, such as
diarrhoea and pneumonia.
Those who survive typically face frequent illnesses as well as reduced
opportunities for education and income earning. Young women with
a history of malnutrition tend to have more difficulty in childbirth and
give birth to smaller babies, thus perpetuating a cycle of malnutrition.
Good nutrition is an essential foundation for health and
development, yet malnutrition continues to be one of the most
serious health problems in Mexico and the single-biggest
contributor to child mortality.
Our contribution
With the support of one the largest private humanitarian
organization, World Vision, we worked with families and children in
the community San Felipe del Progreso, to help ensure that children
enjoy good health through the plantation of a vegetable field.
Food is produced through agriculture, yet many of the world’s
undernourished children live in families who farm for their
livelihood. One key reason for this irony is that much agricultural
production focuses on staple crops, such as corn. These foods
provide energy but are lacking the variety of nutrients essential
to healthy growth and development. Interventions designed to
improve agriculture often focus on increasing the yield of these
staple crops. A much greater impact on nutrition can be achieved
by shifting the main focus to increasing the variety of nutrient-rich
foods produced and consumed by smallholder farm families.
Invest in people and children: safeguard and strengthen the
capacity of parents and teachers to provide for the food, health,
and nutrition of their families.
Increase access to year-round availability of high-nutrient
content food.
Improve nutrition knowledge among rural households to enhance
dietary diversity.
Incorporate explicit nutrition objectives thorough agriculture practices.
This requires explicitly building nutrition objectives into agriculture
programmed designs, empowering smallholder farmers and
incorporating nutrition education with agriculture interventions.
Purpose
Contribute to improve life quality of children’s health with the
plantation of a vegetable field, where KPMG’s personnel promote
the inclusion of parents and children to seed and harvest food for
the future days.
Activities
Friday, September 5, 2014
On Friday, September 5, our team went to San Felipe del Progreso,
State of Mexico
The welcoming
Children, teachers, and parents of the elementary school at
San Felipe del Progreso received us; they gave us a warm and
unforgettable welcome, full with joy and dancing.
With a beautiful greeting they made us feel very welcome.
At the beginning of the event, the school principal said some
words as a welcome for the group in order to invite the attendees
to enjoy and learn, showing gratitude all time.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Poland
2014 Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day
As part of the KPMG in Poland’s 2014 Global Citi ITAS Team
Community Service Day 20 KPMG Citigroup ITAS team members
and other KPMG volunteers in Poland came together to serve the
community. After consideration, we decided to apply an alternative
approach to the “hunger” theme and instead of quenching
humans’ famine, we decided to “kindle thirst for knowledge and
self-development” among underprivileged children within our
neighborhoods. Thus, with the support of Wiosna (Springtime)
association (www.wiosna.org.pl), we invited a group of 15 school-age
children to spend a day with us at our KPMG office. Those youngsters
have restricted access to knowledge caused by difficult family
situations. During the visit, they discovered that there are many
exciting jobs that exist in such an organization as KPMG and that it is
truly worthwhile to grow and reach for such opportunities.
In order to gain the most attention of the participants, the event
was based on the plot of Star Wars, the classic movies. The kids
were tasked with a role play game where they were to defeat the
bad Sith Lord who poisoned the squatters of the galaxy with a virus
of boredom, indolence, and discouragement. They were divided
into smaller groups and, together with KPMG volunteers and their
tutors, started their mission of saving the universe. The young Jedis
were given a number of tasks, games, and riddles (prepared by
KPMG team members) where they needed to utilize the technology
that we use in our everyday work. For example, they had to paint
a picture and subsequently scan it and send by e-mail to another
group, communicate with other group by videoconference (using
Lync Communicator), travel through 45 floors with our ultra-fast
elevators, or find a map inside a locker. After completing individual
tasks, youngsters received password elements, which when
combined, formed a famous Seneca quotation: “We do not learn for
school, but for life.” Discovering this allowed them to activate their
light sabers and triumph after defeating the evil Sith Lord.
KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
45
After the creative and active time, we gathered for a joined dinner
in the nearby restaurant. All of the youngsters were very happy
and excited about the day. The KPMG team was also very satisfied
and pleased to have been involved in preparing and participating in
such an exhilarating event.
At the conclusion of the event, the partners of the local office
decided to sponsor “passports” for the participants of our event
and enroll them to Akademia Przyszłości (Academy for the Future).
Under this yearlong program, during weekly classes, a personal tutor
(volunteer of Wiosna association) will help the kids to cope with
a specific school problem, support in the discovery of their other
dimensions, and try to prove that, contrary to earlier difficulties, the
child is unique and important!

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Singapore
Citi CSR Article
By Madeline Ong
This is my first year with KPMG in Singapore, and I am really thankful
for the opportunity to participate in an overseas corporate social
responsibility (CSR). This year, the IT Assurance and Security (ITAS)
CSR team and the participants with the long-standing support of Ho
Wah Lee, ASPAC IRM lead partner on Citi, were heading towards
Malacca, The Salvation Army, and Hopehaven Centre for Special
Children in Malaysia. This is a center that provides children and young
adults with special needs (e.g., disabilities such as cerebal palsy,
Down’s syndrome, attention deficit disorder, autism, and learning
difficulties) with education and daycare services.
On August 8, 2014, we took a five-hour bus ride to reach our
beneficiary’s location in Malacca. Despite the long journey,
we were all energetic and excited to meet our beneficiary from
Hopehaven Centre for Special Children. We met them for the first
time at the dining area, where we were all seated together for our
sumptuous KFC lunch; I tried to interact with our beneficiaries
during lunch; however, as most of them were rather shy towards
strangers, the first interaction I had with them did not turn out as
well as I had anticipated.
We were separated into different teams after lunch, where we
were given an opportunity to interact with the children in smaller
groups. As the group leader of the team, “Green Panda,” I had
to lead my team through the series of programs which had been
preplanned by the ITAS CSR team. We started off with playing
musical chairs together with the children. Even though it was just
a simple game, we could see the children enjoying themselves
from the joy and laughter on their lovely faces. It did not take long
before all the volunteers were singing and dancing along with the
children and it had brought both the children and the volunteers
closer together.
After the games, we sat down in our groups to paint an animal
mask. As we are in the “Green Panda” team, we were supposed
to color a panda-shaped mask with the beneficiaries. Initially, I was
afraid that the beneficiaries might get bored and disinterested by
this activity, as they belong to the older group of beneficiaries aged
between 20 and 40 years old. However, I was glad to see that
KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
51
they were excited about the activity and were enthusiastic about
painting their masks. During the mask painting, I noticed that there
was one child not participating the activity. Upon further interaction
and small talks with him, I realized that the child was partially blind
and was not able to find the colors that he wanted for coloring the
panda. I spent more time with him, guiding and helping him
in the completion of the mask, and it was inspiring to see his
enthusiasm in participating for this activity despite his disability.
Likewise, I was also surprised by other children with their creative
and innovative designs for the panda-shaped mask, and it was
very heartwarming to see how the beneficiaries found joy in such
a simple activity. Upon the completion of the mask, we had time
to have a look and buy handmade crafts made by the beneficiaries,
which is part of education program to create employment
opportunities for them. I was deeply touched by the center’s
love and thoughtfulness to assist the children in assimilating into
the society. The beautiful craftsmanship attracted most of us to
purchase a souvenir to show our support to these children who
continued to show perseverance in their lives.
As a form of appreciation for our visit and for the donations
by KPMG participants, the children had prepared a special
performance. Once again, the beneficiaries surprised me with
their talents in singing and dancing as they proved that they were
a lot better dancers than I was! The best part of the performance,
which touched my heart deeply, was the beneficiaries singing
“Tian Mi Mi,” the famous Chinese song. Even though they were
not fluent in Mandarin, the volunteers tried to encourage them by
singing the song along with them!
The event ended with a presentation of the donated items and
a group photo of the KPMG volunteers together with the children
of Hopehaven Centre for Special Children. Although our interaction
with the children might be short, I am glad that I was given the
opportunity to join KPMG and the ITAS CSR team in making a
difference to their lives. This volunteering experience has also
allowed me to learn about putting others before myself and to
be patient with people who might require more time. I am also
inspired by my fellow colleagues who made time to participate
in this meaningful event and worked as a team to make this event
a success.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Seoul, South Korea
On August 23, 2014, KPMG in South Korea IRM team volunteered
as part of the Korean Organ Donor Program. The objective of the
program is a life-sharing movement through sharing healthy organs
while alive or donating after death to save the precious lives of
others. We prepared, served, and cleaned up lunch for patients
involved in the program.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Thailand
On the day of the event, we spent quality time together.
The volunteers taught the children about the current global
warming crisis while painting the cloth bags, which the children
could use for school. We also bonded with the children by helping
to prepare lunch and making fruit jelly together.
On September 13, 2014, KPMG in Thailand’s Citigroup
engagement led a team of 36 members to support a local
underprivileged individual organization by spending a day with the
children at Foundation For the Better Life of Children.
Foundation For the Better Life of Children or, FBLC, is located in
Bangkok; central part of Thailand. There are around 60 students
aged 3–15 years old from less fortunate families in the area.
Many opportunities are provided to the children in FBLC, such as
accommodation, education programs, mental cares, and career
development.
By the end of the day, each volunteer went home with a day of
fun and happiness as well as fulfillment of giving something back
to our society.
Prior to the event, KPMG team came up with an idea to have
fund-raising from our staff and management by selling homemade
cookies and brownies. As a result, we obtained contributions
totaling up to 43,500 THB in cash. We spent 20,000 THB to buy
food, medical supplies, and household products for the children
and donated 13,500 THB in cash to the organization.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
London, United Kingdom
We realized just how hard the volunteers at the center must work
during the lunch hour. With people coming in and out of the center
for nearly two hours, the pile of plates to wash builds up very
quickly. We helped the staff with the washing up, serving food,
wiping down tables, and tidying. Even with 15 of us helping out,
we were still kept on our toes!
London CSR Activity Day 2014
For this year’s CSR activity, the U.K. team spent a day at the
Acton Homeless Centre. The center is operated by Acton
Homeless Concern, an independent charity founded in 1988.
It aims to provide a caring and safe environment for the
poor, the marginalized, and those who suffer from isolation.
An estimated 1000 individuals from diverse backgrounds access
the center’s food, clothing, and health services throughout any
one week. Impressed by the noble intentions and efforts of the
charity, we all had been really looking forward to the volunteering
day at the center!
We began our day with a short welcome from the center manager
and volunteers already working at the center. We have volunteered
with this charity before and it was great to catch up with the staff
who continue to keep the center alive, clean, and tidy.
Our tasks throughout the day included cleaning, preparing food,
and organizing the food stock room. We soon put our consulting
brains into action and decided to organize ourselves into teams to
get the jobs done in the most efficient way.

Once we were all done with our respective tasks, it was time for
the most memorable activity of the day—serving food to those
in need. There were around 100 people that came for lunch that
day, and the center soon became very busy and hectic. The food
is cooked to be both nutritious and healthy, but above all it is made
to be hot and filling. For some of the people visiting the center,
this would be the only meal that they eat during the day.
KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
We all felt very happy that we were able to visit the Acton
Homeless Centre again. Although our contribution of one day
of our time was small, it was a very humbling experience, and
it was great to see the amazing work that the volunteers at the
center perform. We hope to visit the center again in the future and
maintain our good relationship with them.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Baltimore, United States
On September 12, 2014, seven members of the Baltimore office
of KPMG LLP spent the day at Our Daily Bread in downtown
Baltimore. Our Daily Bread is Maryland’s hot meal program,
serving more than a quarter million meals to the hungry of
Baltimore City each year. Our Daily Bread serves nutritious lunches
every day of the year and breakfast to seniors and individuals with
disabilities each weekday.
The KPMG team members filled well organized and defined roles
at Our Daily Bread. Steve Maex, Richard Gillen, and Chioma Agu
served water and tea to the customers while Ludi Lai and Kelly
Yost were responsible for cleaning open seats as soon as they
became available. Lucas Ward and Peter Dunbar were “runners”
who carried trays of food from the kitchen to the tables.
We look forward to continuing this tradition next year!
Richard Gillen commented, “It was an enlightening and rewarding
experience to take part in the Citi Day of Service at Our Daily Bread.
After seeing the weekday lunch service in action, I can certainly
appreciate the amount of planning and coordination that goes into
ensuring daily meals are available for those in need. I am glad we had
this opportunity to come together and support such a good cause.”
Lucas Ward added, “Personally, I thought it was a great
experience to be able to go out into the community in order to give
back. Being able to provide and serve food for hundreds of people
in need was quite a humbling experience that really makes you
realize all that you have in life.”
KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Steve Maex summed it up well when he said, “The Citi Day of
Service was, once again, an extremely rewarding and fulfilling
experience. Taking time away from the daily grind and putting it
to a cause such as Our Daily Bread serves as a great opportunity to
reflect on blessings that we have, and demonstrate our
gratefulness by giving back to the less fortunate. Our tasks were
valuable in supporting the Catholic Charities mission to improve
the lives of Marylanders in need. I am glad that KPMG has given
me the opportunity to support the community in this fashion.”

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
Dallas, United States
Hunger Busters (http://www.hungerbusters.com/) is the local
organization we have selected to serve this year. Hunger Busters
began as a mobile, street-level feeding operation for homeless
people in the Dallas area. Hunger Busters has since expanded in
size and scope, offering an often-missed third meal of the day to
underprivileged children in the Dallas area. Today, Hunger Busters’
“Feed the Need” after-school program operates in 11 DISD
schools, feeding over 150,000 meals each year. The Dallas
Citi team that participated in this service project consisted
of Leslie Ingram, Erick Hernandez, and Jake Baine this year.
They prepared 450 sandwiches from start to finish, packaged the
sandwiches, and assembled the remaining items to put together
a complete lunch for the children. A pudding cup, crackers, and
a beverage were the items that were included in addition to a
homemade sandwich to make a complete lunch for the children.
We had a great time and are looking forward to the Citi Community
Service Project!!

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
New York, United States
1.7 million New Yorkers live in poverty, struggling to afford basic
necessities such as rent and medical care while trying to put food
on their tables. As part of a concerted effort to reduce hunger and
food waste, a group of 26 volunteers from the New York City office
took part in a corporate repack aided by City Harvest. Each and
every volunteer made a huge difference, as all hands were needed
in the repack warehouse located in Long Island City, Queens.
Founded in 1982, City Harvest is the world’s first, and city’s only,
food rescue organization, working to end hunger across the
five boroughs.
As part of the event, KPMG volunteers were able to help rescue
and repack peaches and nectarines in over 420 boxes, totaling
12,580 pounds! Global Citi ITAS Team Project Coordinator Bien
Galang said, “It was a fun and productive event; I was able to learn
what a ‘good’ peach is and a ‘bad’ peach.” The produce boxed
and saved by our volunteers was used to distribute to a potential
network of over 500 community food programs.
Our team was made up of all levels and experience from
associates to partners and from those who have been with KPMG
for only a few days to those with decades of service. We were able
to come together as a team and lend our collective service to help
thousands of people in need around our community. Newcomer
Sachita Laddha showed her overwhelming gratitude by saying,
“Being part of this event really made me feel a sense of unity with
the team—it was a great chance to see the outreach I can have
with a company like KPMG and I am so thankful I was able to take
part in this event.”
After nearly four hours of service, our team built up a strong
appetite ourselves as we had a team lunch to share our stories
and think about potential organization for next year’s Global
Community Service Day.

KPMG’s Global Citi ITAS Team Community Service Day 2014
St. Louis, United States
On September 17, 2014 three KPMG LLP volunteers from the
firm’s St. Louis office spent the day at the Food Outreach Center,
in St. Louis, Missouri. The Food Outreach Center is a not-for-profit
organization that offers several programs to low-income men,
women, and children diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and cancer in
the St. Louis area. Their programs include individual nutritional
counseling, Monday hot lunches, dieting education, cooking
classes, and prepared food-grocery program. For over 25 years,
Food Outreach has strived to “enhance the quality of life of those
living with HIV/Aids or cancer in the St. Louis Metro area.”
Founded in 1988, Food Outreach’s original mission was to
service low-income individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS but
has since expanded the scope to include those diagnosed
Cancer. The number of patients that Food Outreach has served
continues to grow, from having served seven clients in 1988 to
2,053 clients in 2012. In 2012 alone, Food Outreach distributed
over a half-million meals to people in need. Food Outreach
serves clients within a 200 mile radius of St. Louis and is the only
St. Louis-area organization that serves low-income individuals
battling these life-threatening diseases.
The KPMG volunteers helped with the prepared food-grocery
program that operates Tuesdays from noon to 7.00 p.m. and
Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This included filling customers’ orders of prepared food, made at
the Food Outreach Center, and donating groceries. The orders
include a selection of meats, canned fruits, vegetables, juice,
potatoes, rice, cereal, and other essentials to provide clients with
approximately two meals a day for two weeks, or if they are from
a farther location, two meals a day for one month. Additionally,
KPMG volunteers assisted in keeping inventory stocked in the
grocery area during down times. By the end of the day, KPMG’s
volunteers had assisted in serving over 30 clients.
This year’s community service day was very rewarding for the
individuals who brought a few extra helping hands to the Food
Outreach Center, and the appreciation shown from the Food
Outreach staff was humbling. The St. Louis IRM team is excited for
next year’s community service event.

City overview
The metropolitan St. Louis area, known as Greater St. Louis, is the
19th-largest metropolitan area in the United States with a population
of 2,900,605. The city was founded in 1764 and became a major port
on the Mississippi River. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase
Exposition and the 1904 Summer Olympics. The economy of St. Louis
relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods,
and tourism. St. Louis is home to three professional sports teams:
the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful Major League
Baseball clubs; the hockey St. Louis Blues; and the football St. Louis
Rams. The city is commonly identified with the Gateway Arch, the
tallest man-made monument in the United States and the world’s
tallest arch at 630 feet (192 meters). The Gateway Arch was built as a

Culture
With its French past and waves of Catholic immigrants from Ireland,
Germany and Italy, in the 19th and 20th centuries, St. Louis is a major
center of Roman Catholicism in the United States. St. Louis also boasts
the largest Ethical Culture Society in the United States.
The city is defined by music and the performing arts, especially its
association with blues, jazz, and ragtime. St. Louis is home to the St. Louis
Symphony, the second-oldest symphony orchestra in the United States,
which has toured nationally and internationally to strong reviews.

The Gateway Arch marks downtown St. Louis and a historic center that
includes the federal courthouse where the Dred Scott case was first
argued, a newly renovated and expanded public library, major churches
and businesses, and retail. An increasing downtown residential
population has taken to adapting office buildings and other historic
structures. In nearby University City is the Delmar Loop, ranked by
the American Planning Association as a “great American street” for
its variety of shops and restaurants, and the Tivoli Theater, all within
walking distance.
Unique city and regional cuisine reflecting various immigrant groups
include toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, provel cheese, the slinger,
the Gerber sandwich, the St. Paul sandwich, and St. Louis-style
pizza, featuring thin crust and provel cheese. A new generation of
sophisticated chefs are emphasizing use of local produce, meats, and
fish, based on the bounty of the region, and neighborhood farmers’
markets have become increasingly popular, as well as one downtown.
Artisan bakeries, salumeria, and chocolatiers have been founded and
are thriving in the city.
A City of sports
St. Louis is home to a number of professional and collegiate sports
teams. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable fans give the city a reputation
as “a top-notch sports town” and “Baseball City USA.” The Sporting
News rated St. Louis the nation’s “Best Sports City” in 2000.
St. Louis has three major league sports teams. The St. Louis Cardinals,
one of the oldest franchises in Major League Baseball, have won 11 World
Series, with one of the championships played against the old cross-city rival
St. Louis Browns in 1944. The Cardinals’ 11 titles is second all-time only to
the New York Yankees. The National Hockey League team, the St. Louis
Blues, have made three Stanley Cup finals from 1968 to 1970, and
made 25 consecutive playoff appearances from 1979–80 to 2003–04.
The city’s National Football League franchise, the St. Louis Rams, won
the Super Bowl in 1999. The city also has a history in soccer, contributing
at least one participant to each FIFA World Cup ever contested by the
United States men’s team.
