DESCRIPTION
TheACL450IonizedEnvironmentElectrostaticLocatorisapocketsize,noncontactingstaticmeter
whichproducesconsistentlyaccuratereadingsandiseasytouse.TheACL450features:
x Pulsingbeamrangefinderforalwaysobtainingthecorrectreading
x Driftfreeaccuracyeveninionizedenvironments
x HOLDbuttontocapturetransientreadings
x Recorderoutputand40hourbatterylifeforunattendedmonitoring
x Exclusiveautozerocircuit
x Availablechargedplateadaptor(Part#ACL450CPS)
WiththeACL450,accuracyisunquestioned.WhentherangefinderLEDbeamsformanonpulsing
circle,themeterisindicatingthatyouhavepositionedtheunitatthecorrectdistance(1inch)fromthe
targetforreadingsupto20kV.Toreadhighervoltage,usethegreaterdistancesgivenin
“Specifications”section.
Forlocationswhereitishardtoreadthemeter’sdisplay,youcanfreezethedisplayednumberandthen
readit.Simplypositionthemeteratthecorrectdistancefromthetarget,pressandreleasetheHOLD
button,movetheinstrumenttoamoreconvenientposition,thenreadthedisplay.
Zeroingispushbuttonsimple,andtheACL450’schopperstabilizedcircuitryisimmunetoionizationso
accuracyisassuredinallenvironments.Forlongtermmonitoring,thefrontpaneloutputjackprovides
easyinterfacingwitharecorder,oscilloscopeorautomateddataacquisitionsystem.

OPERATION
1.ON/ZEROButton
TheON/ZERObuttonperformsthreefunctions:(1)ON,(2)ZERO,and(3)AUTOSHUTDOWNTIMER
resetinthenormaloperationmode.
ToturnunitON:PressandholdtheON/ZERObuttonfor1second,thenrelease.Thedisplay
appearsandtherangefinderLEDsbegintoflashalternately.Zeroingtheunitadjuststheoffsets
ofthemetertowithin2countstypicalor7countsmaximum.
ToZEROunit:WithunitON,pointthesensorplateawayfromanychargedobject,pressandhold
theON/ZERObuttonuntilreadingstabilizes,thenrelease.Asanalternative,pointittoward,but
donottouch,aknowngroundedsurfacesuchasthepalmofyourhand.WhileZERObuttonis
pressed,theLEDswillstopblinkingandonlytherightLEDwillremainlit(asviewedwhilereading
themeter).DuringZERO,allannunciatorsareoffincludingDP(decimalpoint).
2.Dischargetheinstrument
Grounding(discharging)yourbodyalsodischargestheinstrumentthroughitsconductivecase.Ifyou
arenotwearingagroundedwriststrap,dischargeyourbodybytouchingagroundedmetalobject
suchasawaterpipe,conduit,orworkbench.Asanalternative,placeagroundedwriststraparound
theinstrumentitself.Theshellofthefrontpaneloutputjackcanbeusedtoprovidea“hard”orsoft
groundconnection.
3.Takeareading
Forvoltageslessthan20kV,movethesensorplateoftheinstrumenttowardthetargetsurface.
Whentheinstrumentisexactlythecorrectdistance(1inch)fromthetarget,theimageprojectedby
therangefinderLEDsappearsasastationarycircle.Toreadvoltagesof20kVandhigher,usethe
distancesandmultiplyingfactorsgivenunder“Range”inSpecifications.Ifreadingsseem
inconsistent,measureusingthegroundtooutputjackconnection.
4.HOLDareading
PressandreleasetheHOLD/OFFbuttonforlessthan3seconds.Thepresentreadingisdisplayed
alongwiththeword“HOLD”.Toconservebatterylife,theLEDsturnoffwhilethereadingisheld.To
takeanothermeasurement,pressandreleasetheHOLD/OFFbuttonagain.ThisalsoresetstheAUTO
SHUTDOWNTIMER.
5.TurntheinstrumentOFF
PressandholdHOLD/OFFbuttonforlongerthan3seconds.
6. AUTOSHUTDOWNTIMER
Duringnormaloperation(notduringZERO)ablinkingdecimalpointindicatestheAUTOSHUTDOWN
TIMERisenabled.IftheAUTOSHUTDOWNTIMERisdisabled,thedecimalpointwillbeon
continuously.HoldingdowntheZERObutton,whileunitisON,forlessthan3secondsresetsthe
AUTOSHUTDOWNTIMER(ifenabled).TheAUTOSHUTDOWNTIMERisenabledordisabledby
turningontheunitandkeepingtheON/ZERObuttonpressedthentogglingtheHOLD/OFFbutton.
Theenabling/disablingoftheAUTOSHUTDOWNTIMERisindicatedbythedecimalpoint:DPon=

7.VersionDisplay
WithunitOFF,pressandholdtheHOLD/OFFbuttonthenpresstheON/ZERObuttonandreleasethe
HOLD/OFFbutton,theunitwillblinktheversionnumber.ForVERSION1.02therightlightLEDwill
blinkthefirstdigit(1).TheleftLEDwillblinkonceindicatingtheendofthefirstdigit.TherightLED
willthenblinktwiceindicatingthethirddigit(2).ReleasingtheON/ZEROnumberallowstheunitto
returntonormaloperation.Ifthedigitiszerotenblinkswillbeoutput.
CAUTION:
Ifyoubringtheinstrument(oranygroundedobject)tooclosetoachargedsurface,anelectricalarcmay
occur.Toavoidthisandtakereadingssafely,checkthevoltage/distancerangesgiveninSpecifications.
Alwaysbringtheinstrumenttowardatargetsurfacefromadistanceofseveralinches.Asthedistance
closes,watchthedisplaytobesurethattheproperdistanceismaintainedforeachvoltagerange.

MAINTENANCE
Replacingthebattery
Thebatteryshouldbereplacedannually,wheneveryouplananextendedperiodofunattended
monitoring,orwhenever“BAT”appearsinthedisplayformorethananinstant.LowBATissetfor6.9±
0.6volts.Removethebatterybeforelongtermstorage.SeeSpecificationsforreplacementtype.If
unitfailstooperateafterreplacingthebattery,removebattery,pressandreleasetheON/ZERObutton,
thenreconnectthebattery.
Cleaning
Toobtainaccurate,driftfreereadings,thesensorplateandespeciallytheareaaroundtheaperture
mustbekeptabsolutelycleanatalltimes.Besuretoalwayskeeptheinstrumentinitsprotectivecase
whennotactuallytakingmeasurements.Nevertouchtheaperturewithanything–notevencotton
swabs.Toremovedustorotherparticulatematteruselowpressureinstrumentgradeair.Toremove
severecontaminationsprayorflushwiththesmallestpracticalamountsofcleantechnicalgrade
isopropylalcohol.Thenstandtheinstrumentonendandallowittodryforseveralhours.DONOT
cleanwithanysolventonaregularbasis.
ZeroDrift
Applyantistatsolutiontoplasticsurroundingthesensorplateusingalintfreeapplicator.DONOT
allowentryintoaperture.2001/2003GeneralPurposeStaticide®and8044Staticide®LintFreeWipes
arerecommendedforthisapplication.
CALIBRATION
TheACL450IonizedEnvironmentElectrostaticLocatorisfactorycalibratedpriortoshipment.
Recalibrationshouldbeperformedannually,ormorefrequentlyifspecifiedbycontractorcompany
policy.Yourinstrumentshouldalsoberecalibratedanytimeithasbeenrepairedortamperedwith.
ACLwillrecalibrateyourinstrumentatareasonablecostorprovideinformationandprocedureson
calibrationuponrequest.WealsooffercalibrationserviceswithtraceabilitytoNISTorMILSTD
45662A.

TheACL450hasundergonetestingtoqualifyforthefollowingmarkings:

4.Removetheconnectionofthe450CPSchargerfromtheplatewhilekeepingthepowerpushbutton
depressed.
5.Begintimingthemomentcontactisbrokenwiththeplate.

CLEANING
Itisimportanttokeeptheinsulatorsontheadaptercleanandfreeofcontaminantsthatmaycausesurface
leakage.Totesttheperformanceoftheadapterplate,chargetheplateandnotethatdischargerateinanon
ionizedarea.Theselfdischargerateto10%oforiginalvoltageshouldnotbelessthanfiveminutes.
Theareaaroundtheapertureofthe450testermustbekeptcleantoensureaccurate,driftfreereadings.
Nevertouchtheaperturewithanything.Toremovedustorotherparticulatematter,uselowpressureinstrument
gradeair.Toremovemoreseverecontamination,sprayorflushwiththesmallestpracticalamountofclean
technicalgradeisopropylalcohol.Aftercleaningwithalcohol,allowtheinstrumenttodryforseveralhoursbefore
use.

thecustomerisbilledthecosttorefurbishtheunitandformissingaccessoriesandmerchandise.Noproductsmay
