"We are working out plans to launch new activities with a long term vision for the next 20 to 30 years with the aim of taking up research in emerging areas and also expecting some new areas to emerge," senior JISc professor and co. chair of IISc centenary conference M L Munjal told reporters in Bangalore on Thursday Tata Sons are likely to pump in Rs 200 to Rs 400 crore for takina un the new activities, h-4 Munjal said, pointing out that the vromsal was still under initial-stages. Formal-Oment The projects are likely to take shape by March 2009, when a formal announcement would be made. IISc will be celebrating its centennial in the presence of some of the world's renowned scientists, nobel laureates and the institute's alumni at the fourday centenary conference scheduled to commence in Bangalore from December 13. PM to unveil plaque Prime Minister Manhoman Singh will unveil a commemorative plaque in the campus ahead of the conference on December 3. The centenary conference will be inaugurated by former President A P J Abdul Kalam and will be be marked by several events focusing on the institute's contributionsto fundamental and applied scientific research and its place as a rich source of talented scie n M i manpower. Vice-President Hamid Ansari will release two special stamps to mark the event. Around 5,000 people are expected to attend-the inauguralandis likely to be held at the Gymkhana Grounds. Workshops, panel discussions and public talks will be held on all the four days at the campus premises. 'India - A Knowledge Power: Opportunities and Challenges', 'Climate Change:A n Indian Perspective' and 'Reinventing IISc for the next Century' - are topics which have been s e lected for panel discussions. The conference will also have its star attractions. Nobel laureates Sydney Brenner (medicine 2001) and Eric Maskin (economics, 2007)will be present. Martin Rees, renowned cosmologist and astrophysicist will deliver one of the keynote address at the conference. Webcast live AU the events will be webcast live. The institute also plans to hold "Open days" between February 28 and March 3 next year to provide an ovwrtunity for the general public access to the various laboratories and interact with scientists.
