It is an established practice of going beyond what is required to create the best performing, most resilient supplemental surgical lighting in the industry. Kurtzon was the first lighting company to introduce stainless steel lighting fixtures into surgical rooms. At the time this was seen as unnecessary; Morris Kurtzon, our company’s founder, insisted that stainless steel was the right choice to ensure a sanitary medical environment. It is this kind of visionary expertise that continues to push Kurtzon to the forefront of high end medical technology. 5 Kurtzon Kurtzon Lighting Lighting www.Kurtzon.com Trends In Healthcare Design WIth the Healthcare Reform Bill signed into law, hospital administrators are increasingly being more critical of budgets and equipment that have an impact on the budget. To healthcare designers and their clients, this does not mean returning to the impersonal rooms of the past, sometimes holding more than three patients, but rather using fixtures with a high longevity. We are all aware that going green is a lasting trend, and it is well documented that Kurtzon’s fixtures often times outlast the hospitals they are placed in. Healthcare facilities are increasingly becoming more integrated with cultural centers and educational institutions, leading to advancements in research and development, new processes and procedures and a more integrated setting where learning and expertise occur in the same building. Over the last few years, evidence based research and numerous publications from psychological institutions have indicated that design features focusing on mood, well-being, color and illumination. The idea is to make the healthcare facility seem more like a presonalized room, replete with the usual accoutrements of a residential room. New buildings being designed are required to account for their environmental impact, and such decisions are made in the early planning stages. Specifiers have been selecting lighting products that use less energy and do not require additional maintenance. Kurtzon Kurtzon Lighting Lighting www.Kurtzon.com 6 Corrosion Resistance, No Emissions, Custom Mounting LENS - Two piece acrylic lens system with an external clear lens for easy cleaning and a linear prismatic acrylic lens internal for light control. RFI shielded with a .375” metallic conductive grid that complies with radiated emissions (RE101) of Military Standard 461E. RFI (Radio Frequency Interference), which is also known as EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) is any electromagnetic radiation or disturbance which is emitted from an electrical circuit or electronic component that interrupts or interferes with the operation of other electronic components, or electrical circuits. RFI or EMI may be introduced intentionally as in the case of electronic warfare, or unintentionally from an electronic or electrical device or system. EMI may also be created as a result of a nuclear explosion. EMI / RFI shielding should be an integral consideration to electronic device or electronics system design. Good RFI / EMI design techniques include, mechanical or electromagnetic shielding, careful circuit filtering design, adequate circuit ground design, as well as, attenuation to the bonding of the ground points DOOR FRAME - Aluminum, cold-rolled steel (CRS) or stainless steel door frames come in channel inset, one piece inset or overlapping styles. 20-gauge CRS or stainless steel channel door frame hinged to housing with continuous stainless steel piano hinge. Secured with 2 captive stainless steel fasteners. See Options for 85 PSI rating (HD-85). The overlapping door frame is usually reserved for clean room applications, however, in certain medical applications where a high pressure washdown is required, our fixtures can withstand a 1700 PSI hose down, equivalant to IP66. HOUSING - Aluminum, cold-rolled steel (CRS) or stainless steel housings are completley hole free and seam welded. We even take the cleanliness one step further by reinforcing the seams with silicone sealant on the OF/OG series. CUSTOM MOUNTING - The ML-F’s continuous row mounting allows the fixtures to be placed end- to-end and end-to-side in nearly any continuous row or rectangle. The series uses twelve (12) different fixtures to provide the flexibility to create a neat and clean installation without overlapping flanges or penetrations in the plenum seal. This arrangement allows direct through wiring of all fixtures, a sealed plenum space and an accommodating fixture arrangement. ML-OG 7 Kurtzon Kurtzon Lighting Lighting ML-OF (Custom Flange) ML-S (Custom Graphic) www.Kurtzon.com Trends In Surgical Suite Design Surgical suite design has developed significantly over the past 10 years and will continue to change over the next decade. Surgical suites used to be on average 400 feet but have now increased in size to 600 feet to accmomodate larger equipment, more staff and a diverse range of specialists. The evolution of using the smaller group of operating rooms over the larger groups of them in the past. Now we see a more specialized approach to grouping specific surgical specialties together. With this trend we have also seen an increase in the utilization of minimally invasive surgical techniques. This increase has had a double effect; in the short run, it has drawn the need for larger operating rooms, but as technology evolves, we will see a decrease in the size of these rooms, based on new robotic technology and remote equipment that does not require as much human interaction. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is an efficient, low-risk surgical procedure. It is a safe, feasible, and patient-friendly method of performing an operation. Minimally invasive techniques satisfy patients’ desire for a swift recovery and shorten the hospitalization period. As a result, these procedures are being employed across various specialties. These procedures are performed through small incisions, where endoscopes are plugged-in to operate from within a body cavity and offer numerous advantages over the conventional invasive surgeries. The major benefits of minimally invasive surgical procedures are: superior cosmetic result; reduced post-operative pain and faster recovery rates. Over the last decade and a half, it is apparent that minimally invasive surgery is gaining ground rapidly The development of special high-technology ORs, including intra-operative MRI rooms. MRI rooms require special fixtures and electrical components. Kurtzon offers fluorescent and LED lighting options for these rooms. Fluorescent lamps interrupt the MRI read, so these lamps must be switched off while the MRI machine is in use. LED’s can be used while the MRI machine is on, and with the push for green technology greater than ever, it is a nice alternative in specific environments where maitnenance can be costly. Operating room size It is now uncommon for a surgical suite to be programmed with operating rooms of less than 600 square feet, unless the focus of the unit is purely outpatient procedures. Even in outpatient centers with increased use of MIS techniques, the need for larger ORs approaching 600 square feet is still present. Certainly the equipment is the same, but in an outpatient setting, the cases are typically less complicated and are more predictable and require smaller surgical teams. This often feeds into decisions to allow for slightly smaller ORs. In addition to the perception that outpatient facilities can be designed with smaller ORs, budget constraints are often involved in the decision to limit the size of outpatient ORs. Nonetheless, most outpatient suites are still being designed with ORs of over 500 square feet. Kurtzon Kurtzon Lighting Lighting www.Kurtzon.com 8 Healthcare The efforts to create affordable healthcare for all is close to becoming a reality. The need for sanitary medical environments will rise in conjunction with this increase in additional healthcare patients. To keep this in perspective, Kurtzon offers three different types of surgical troffers. EF-EG series Intended for the basic suites. F-G Series This series has the many exclusive features found in suite fixtures. It is the only supplemental surgical suite luminaire to be offered with continuous rectangles. Intended for the areas where the highest light levels need to be met, this feature moves fixtures closer to the table than any other. The OF and OG Series, the O stands for optimized. This fixture has the widest array of features and is ready for the highest standards applied to the surgical arena. Cleanroom ratings and NSF listed gaskets combine with anti-microbial finishes and smooth surfaces for the cleanest suite solution. Our OF-OG series carry a cleanroom listing to ensure the highest level of particulate protection. The decision to place a cleanroom rating on a medical troffer is one that is often copied, but was initiated by Kurtzon Lighting given our extensive track record of creating lighting for cleanroom environments. Designers should apply the same principles for designing healing environments in a small rural area that they do to a large urban one. Interiors need to communicate to potential staff, patients and the community the hospital offers quality care. This was the case when the Aurora Medical Center in Summit, WI was designed. Kurtzon’s ML-EF/EG fixtures were selected for this project which Medical Construction Design magazine called “a resort like environmentemphasizing warm tones, curved walls and furniture with an abundance of natural light.” 9 Kurtzon Kurtzon Lighting Lighting www.Kurtzon.com Med Lock Series ML-OF Operating Room Planning and Layout Guide ML08 1. Electrical The electrical plans will indicate the number and configuration of circuits controlling the fixture. A RFI filter is required per switched circuit to comply with Mil Std. 461e. Please address the following: A. The number of switched circuits per fixture. B. Emergency Lighting Maintaining safe lighting levels in the surgical suite during a power outage is possible using a self contained battery powered emergency lighting ballast. Emergency lighting ballasts are available in two general types. Standard NFPA 101 egress lighting type and generator backup type. The two differ in the amount of light generated and running time. The generator backup type can drive up to three lamps at nearly full output for a short duration, usually less than five minutes. Egress lighting types will drive one or two lamps at a greatly reduced output for 90 minutes. Please advise the type of emergency lighting required for your project. Right End The standard fixture is provided with one switched circuit and therefore one RFI. Additional switched circuits are specified by the appropriate option suffix additions to the catalog number such as; 2/CIR or 3/CIR. Keep in mind; there is a physical limit to the number of ballasts RFI filters and emergency lighting ballasts a fixture can contain. Our 2x4 fixture allows up to four circuits or 3 circuits and one high lumen emergency lighting ballast without modifications. Consult factory for arrangements in excess of this. The smaller 2x2 fixture can accommodate up to two circuits and a high lumen emergency lighting ballast. FA Arrow indicates maximum candlepower direction or aim. Kurtzon has over 60 years experience in lighting clean rooms that is unmatched in the healthcare sector. The operating room, the most critical of medical areas, must have electrical components that meet Military Standard 461E or F. Our Med Lock line surpasses this standard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 5-10% of hospitalized patients develop a healthcare associated infection (HAI), corresponding to approximatley 2 million infections associated with nearly 100,000 deaths each year in US hospitals. According to CDC, HAI’s are one of the top 10 causes of death in the US. 4 threats to address in controlling healthcare associated infections 1. Leakage of contaminants already present in the room 2. Leakage into the operatin room and/or fixtures from the celing plenum 3. Cleanability of the fixtures 4.
