The American director and master of theatrical wizardry Robert Wilson
transforms Franz Liszt’s music for the fourteen stations of the cross into
an abstract sound and light installation. The venue was once an auction
house for livestock, essentially a huge barn. In addition, students from the
Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and young artists from the Watermill Center
New York under Robert Wilson’s guidance have developed their own
responses to Liszt’s gripping late work using the tools of media art. After all,
Liszt had always wanted to include the visual arts.

»Babel« is philosophical and religious dance theater. For building the
Tower of Babel, God punishes the peoples of the world with language
confusion and disperses them to all the ends of the earth. How do the
many nations communicate with one another, how compatible are
their religions? Thirteen performers and five musicians go in search of
a polyglot identity: confusions, conflicts, comedy, chaos. The one holy
language has long been lost . . .

Arte Povera was the most important art movement in Italy of the late
1960s and early 1970s. Using the most simple, despised materials (lead,
fat, wire, neon), the artists of this “poor art” sought to create a new
aesthetic that abolished the distance between art(work) and life.

John Cage was the chameleon of the twentieth century American avantgarde: an expert in chance, an inventor of sound, a mushroom specialist,
a performance artist, and a writer. In his film portrait, Oscar prizewinner
Allan Miller explores the effective power of the composer today, twenty
years after his death. Alongside rarely shown archival material and
concert recordings will be presented as well as the so-called “short
stories”: musicians, composers, companions, and friends speak about
“their” John Cage.

“Invocation” is a religious, spiritual concept: a cry for help, a form of
summoning, an urgent appeal in times of need: “As the hart panteth
after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God,” Psalm 42.
Experts from the secular and the spiritual worlds ask for the meaning of
this “vertical” need today.

Nike Wagner, artistic director
The Liszt jubilee year has come to an end, but Kunstfest Weimar continues
to celebrate this inexhaustible musician, European, and Weimar’s local
hero.
The motto for 2012 is “Invocation,” the title of a piano piece by the deeply
religious Franz Liszt.
Invocations are calls to angels or saints in times of deepest need. Art has
made this visible and audible for centuries. Art itself is an inexorable
“calling”: but to whom? Ourselves? Artists from all over the world come to
Weimar for the festival. This time a string quartet plays the role of artist
in residence: Quartour Diotima. Familiar with all avant-garde playing
techniques, this French quartet has already achieved international fame.
The late Beethoven quartets form the basis of their varied, intelligently
selected concert programs.
Sacred works by Franz Liszt will be performed by the successful young
pianists Igor Levit and Herbert Schuch, while guests versed in theology
will ponder our spiritual needs, and there will be no lack of tributes to
John Cage.
The festival features an emphasis on dance: world religions and world
cultures appear in the work of the Flemish-Moroccan choreographer
Side Larbi Cherkaoui. Babel is the title of his bafflingly charming
gesamtkunstwerk of dance, music, cabaret, and sculpture. The BritishIndian “dervish” Akram Khan takes a different approach in Gnosis,
where Indian and contemporary art mix in a dance theater performance
that explores paradoxical states of consciousness.
This year’s large exhibition is presented by Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.
The retrospective looks at arte povera, the then scandalous and influential
Italian art movement from the 1960s and 1970s. The artists aimed at the
aesthetic and social transformation of everyday life; the “poverty” of the
materials was their intellectual concept.
The high point of 2012 is a spectacular new production of the American
director, light designer, and stage magician Robert Wilson. In his staging
of Franz Liszt’s Via Crucis, the music to the fourteen stations of the cross
will be transformed into a fascinating sound and light installation.
In addition, under Wilson’s guidance students from Bauhaus-Universität
Weimar and young artists from Watermill Center New York have created
their own media art commentaries on Liszt’s gripping late work. What was
once a huge livestock auction hall becomes the center of this invocation.
You are cordially welcome to a take part in this years “spiritual” art festival!
