After an intense battery of News, Blogs & Events I a m l o o ki n g fo r : SEA RCH in: News, Blogs & Events Web examinations, only 14 candidates remain on course to joining the 129th class of Minot Police officers. "There were a couple of hiccups here and there," Minot Police Captain Justin Sundheim said. "Overall the group did very well." Just as the sun pierced through the clouds, candidates filed into the Minot State University Dome, and proceeded with their physical examination. Allan Blanks/MDN Applicants jumped, dashed and sweated their way one step closer to serving the city of Minot. "The process starts with a physical endurance test," Sundheim said. "For those who pass the physical endurance test, the next phase is the written exam. Just as the physical test, the written exam has a minimum mandate that must be achieved. Candidates who successfully pass the physical and written portion will begin their initial interviews tomorrow." For candidate Andrew Roach, tomorrow was furthest from his mind. "Coming into today, I focused on eating right and staying mentally strong," Roach said. "Physically, I've been training for over a month and I was determined not to fail." To keep their dreams alive, each applicant had to dig deep and meet an uncompromising set of standards. "A candidate's degree of fitness is measured by the Cooper's test," Sundheim said. "Applicants will perform a variety of endurance exercises. The first measurement is a vertical jump. From there, candidates must complete sit-ups, perform a 300-meter sprint, execute pushups and close with a 1 1/2 mile run." "The physical exam wasn't too bad," Roach said. "Personally, I believe the running may have been the worst part, because we had to do them back to back. Other than that, the exam was pretty grueling but it was worth it." http://www.minotdailynews.com/page/content.detail/id/631923/Before-the-badge.html?na... 3/22/2016 Before the badge - MinotDailyNews.com | News, sports, business, jobs - Minot Daily News Page 2 of 3 With the physical portion complete, applicants faced a written exam that assessed their ability to soundly and swiftly make life-saving decisions. "The test itself is a basic police officer entrance exam," Sundheim said. "This standardized test is used by police departments across the country." Nearly silent and entirely still, candidates sat with their eyes locked on Sundheim as he issued test taking instructions. As the conference room doors closed, exam booklets quickly opened. One by one, each applicant peeled layers of papers that tested their capacity to recall critical details and demonstrate integrity. "Each phase of the selection process is a challenge," Sundheim said. The day's examinations provided candidates with a small sample of challenges yet to come. Beyond the interviews, psychological exams, and the daunting task of graduating the Minot Police Academy; a life in law enforcement is a never ending test of character and service. "It's important for the prospective applicants to practice integrity," Sundheim said. "It's important for the applicants to remember that they are a representative of our department and their community." Serving and protecting the city of Minot is not a right, it's a privilege. "It would mean a lot to me," Roach said. "I've been in Minot for five years now and I really like this community a lot. Becoming a police officer is what I've wanted since I got my degree in Criminal Justice from MSU." © Copyright 2016 Minot Daily News. All rights reserved.
