Lon Po Po By Ed Young 1.) Examine the drawings in Lon Po Po. Pay attention to how Mr. Young uses color both to fill the page and to create a mood. 2.) Illustrate a favorite part or character from the story. 3.) Using a ruler, divide the picture into three parts - one wide and two narrow. Now cut the pieces apart and glue to another sheet of construction paper, leaving a small space between each piece. 4.) Make a narrow red line around each picture piece 5.) Reread Lon Po Po. List the main story elements. 6.) Read a version of Little Red Riding Hood. Again, list the main story elements. 7.) Discuss some of the ways in which the stories are similar and some of the ways in which they are different. 8.) Use the Venn Diagram template to compare and contrast the two stories. 9.) Recall what happened between the wolf and the girls. Think about what the girls might tell their mother. What might they keep a secret? 10)Challenge your child to guess at the words' meanings from context cues. Discuss what words they would substitute for the culturally-inspired words in questions if they were retelling the story, in order to make themselves understood in their own culture. Tell why they believe learning such vocabulary may help us to understand and appreciate other people and foreign cultures. 11) Dress up like the characters and act out the story. 12) Research different kinds of wolves. Write a report about the wolf you chose.
