PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
As 2012 is coming to a close I am very proud of the many student accomplishments this semester. Whether it
was capturing the Gold Medal at the provincial championship or our Reach for The Top Team winning 1st at the
Alberta provincials and qualifying for the International Quiz Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia, Harry Ainlay students
have gone above and beyond to demonstrate their Titan skills.
I also am very proud of our Ainlay staff and the countless extra hours they have dedicated to Titan life. Thank
you for coaching teams, directing plays and concerts, organizing Helping Hampers for families in need, and
tutoring classes early in the morning and after school. Thank you for caring and encouraging students to do
their best.
I want to also recognize the wonderful assistance that parents and guardians have provided in many area within

Junior Womens Basketball
The Junior Womens Basketball team is off to a good
start. They have only had one league game so far
against the Spruce Grove Panthers; defeating them
by 30 points. The combination of returning leaders
and new prospects is going to be an exciting
combination to watch.
TRI-PROV BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Our theme this year is “Rise From The Depths”. We
have 25 students and 10 staff members as a part of
our tournament committee already working hard to
make this our best tournament yet. We are excited
to continue working and having 48 teams as a part of
our tournament. The dates of the tournaments are:
Junior Level: January 31 - February 2, 2013
Senior Level: February 7-9, 2013
Junior High Level: February 21-23, 2013
Junior Mens Basketball
Ainlay’s Junior Mens Basketball team has been
practicing hard since late November and is looking
forward to league and tournament play. With
players coming from 8 different junior high schools,
this year’s team plans to steadily improve
throughout the season.
VOLLEYBALL
Men’s Volleyball
The Senior Men’s Volleyball Team are provincial
champions!!!
After a season with huge
improvements from all players, the team was able to
take the momentum, from winning the city
championships, down to Lethbridge where they
defeated Edmonton Christian. It was truly a team
victory as all players put in a great individual and
team effort throughout the year and proved
themselves to be champions. Congrats to the boys
on an unbelievable season.
CHEER TEAM
The Titan Cheer Team has been working really hard
to learn and perfect their routine for the competitive
season. The team is very excited to be showcasing
part of their routine at the PCE Christmas show on
December 16. The team will also be partnering with
Hope Mission to serve a Christmas dinner for inner
city families at Abbott Elementary School.

CURLING
The Harry Ainlay Curling team has completed a very
successful regular season, with 33 students
participating in our learn-to-curl style team. Over
the 9-week season many students learned basic
curling skills, while others worked on improving their
existing skills. Overall the students had a lot of fun,
were eager to participate in weekly games and
developed a passion for curling. In February, three
teams will be participating in city-finals with hopes of
going to provincials. Thanks for a great season

We have also had the
pleasure of hosting
several students from the University of Alberta’s
Faculty of Education. In mid-October, the future
educators planned and taught lessons in several
English classes. Thank you to Ms. Stephanie Chow
who facilitated the visit from the practicum students!
ENGLISH
We have had a great first semester in the English
department. The students in semestered classes
have nearly completed their course work and are
very busy meeting the curricular outcomes. In
January, these students will be reviewing and
preparing for their final exams. Full year classes are
also in full swing, building on the foundations
necessary for success in upcoming summative
assessments. Full year students will write midterms
in January.
We would like to congratulate Nicholas Kwan –
Wang, the 2012 recipient of the Menzies English
Award. Established by Mrs. June Menzies on her
retirement, this award recognizes outstanding
student achievement for both the school awarded
and diploma exam mark. This award is presented to
the student enrolled in regular day classes who
achieved the highest final blended mark in either
English 30-1 or 30-2. Nicholas Kwan – Wong
Congratulations to Mrs. Holtz and the Reach team of
Tim Brooks, Goutam Venkatramanan, Miya
Villarena, Theodore Chow and Shane Climenhaga
for winning this year’s University of Alberta Quiz
Bowl Competition. The single Harry Ainlay team
faced off against two teams from Old Scona, two
teams from Bellerose (St. Albert) and six teams from
Webber Academy (Calgary) to win the
tournament. The team will represent Harry Ainlay
and Western Canada at the annual Quiz Bowl final
tournament held in Atlanta, Georgia, in May 2013.
Once again, the Harry Ainlay English Department and
select English 30-1 classes are participating in a
research study with the University of Calgary. This
study is looking at factors that impact reading
comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. Results
of this study are ongoing and will assist teachers in
shaping their practice to better prepare students for
the Reading Comprehension component of the
Diploma Exam (Part B).

BACCALAUREATE
IB Students are Committed to CAS!
The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the IB
Diploma Programme and takes into consideration
the importance of life outside the world of
scholarship and the classroom. CAS stands for
Creativity, Action and Service, and full IB students are
expected to be involved in CAS activities for the
equivalent of approximately two hours each week
during the two years of the programme.
All Harry Ainlay Grade 11
and 12 full IB students have
been busy getting involved
in a myriad of CAS activities.
Students have challenged
themselves
to
be
organizational leaders for
such events as TVT, Oktoberfest and Helping
Hampers. They have also been bold enough to
stretch themselves with creative or healthy
endeavours such as participating on the curling team,
taking up swing dancing and competing in robotics
competitions. As well, many students showed their
community-mindedness through volunteering at the
Festival of Trees.
Keep up the fantastic commitment IB Titans!
Grade 12 IB Extended Essays
Harry Ainlay’s Grade 12 full IB students have recently
been stretching themselves to become better

IB has created a series of World Student Conferences
to bring together IB Diploma Programme students
from around the world to experience what it really
means to “think globally”.
At these conferences, students will be exposed to a
mix of cultures and form new friendships as they
explore ways to make our world a better, more
peaceful place.
These chaperoned events last five days and will
provide those who attend with an exceptional
opportunity to develop leadership skills and an
international understanding.

FINE ARTS
“An Evening At Ainlay”
Over the past months, some seemingly unrelated
groups worked together to provide Harry Ainlay’s
first ever evening of Dinner Theatre. Students of the
Culinary Arts created and presented a sumptuous
turkey dinner after which patrons were presented
with mirth and merriment from participants of our
Musical Theatre classes.
The evening offered
opportunities to enjoy the talents of our Dance
students, the melodramatic approach to theatre,
Broadway highlights, the competitive nature of
common house pets, and the hitherto unseen
unusual talents of livestock. The evening’s offerings
were enhanced by the atmosphere of appreciation
for not only culinary and theatrical efforts, but for
the beauty of the surroundings. The wonderful and
thought-provoking works of our Art students on
display throughout the area brought attention to,
and delight at, yet another facet of the Fine Arts.
This sort of authentic learning
opportunity comes with
rigorous demands on both
students and teachers, but its
value is great. Students are
responsible for fulfilling the
curricular goals of the
projects of course, but more
than that, they take ownership for the success of
them and great pride in their own and their
colleagues’ accomplishments. Teachers may supply
the opportunities, but it is the students who take
ideas and turn them into wonderful events like
these.
Congratulations to all the students who participated
in the event!
Dance
Students in the Harry Ainlay Dance program
performed as part of the Dinner Theatre. They
performed two class pieces based on their study of
Jazz Dance. During the unit, we studied the roots of
jazz in African and Cuban cultures, and touched on
vaudeville, Broadway jazz and jazz styles of various
important figures in the world of American Jazz
Dance. Thank you to those students who made the
commitment to their classmates and were available
for rehearsals and performances. The work they put
in really shows!
Improv Troupe
It has been a very busy fall for the Improv Troupe.
Open Jam sessions continue every Thursday from
3:45 – 4:45 pm in the Theatre. These sessions are
open to ANY student interested in improving their
Improv technique.
The Senior Improv Team

Improv League at Margaret Zeidler Hall (the Citadel
Theatre). They have done Ainlay proud, placing 3rd in
one round of play (where the top two teams tied for
1st!). N.A.I.L. performances are open to the public.
Tickets are available at the door: $8 for students; $10
for adults. The tournament schedule is as follows:
Jan 10: JP, HA, Scona, HH, Mac, AOB, LT
Jan 17: MC, JHP, St.J, HT, WPW, LSL, OR

School Newsletter
The Junior Improv Team has also been formed.
Together with the Senior Team, there are weekly
lunch hour shows in the Theatre every Thursday,
starting at noon. Free admission! We will be
preparing for the heavy tournament season coming
up in the new year. This will start with our very own
Improv Fundraising show on February 8, 2013. This
event promises to be an entertaining evening of
improve shenanigans with special guests doing short
and long form Improv. Later in February, we dive
right in to the Wildfire Improv Festival, hosted by
Rapid Fire Theatre. More details to follow in the new
year.
Drama Production
Students from Harry Ainlay came together to put on
an electrifying performance of Little Shop of Horrors
that ran December 11 – 15, 2012! The cast, crew
and band poured their hearts into the process and
came out smelling like roses. Student critics from the
Critics and Awards program (Cappies) came on the
Friday night to review the show. Their responses will
be published in the Edmonton Journal in the Culture
section, over the next few weeks. You can also check
out: www.cappies.com for reviews and information
about other upcoming Cappies shows and events!
We always have so many people that help us with
different aspects of the production. We would like
to give special thanks to Derks Formal Wear for
loaning us tuxedos for the show. Other businesses
that support our work include: Wade Staples
Production Services, RONA and Home Depot. They
all continue to be great supporters of our yearly
productions. We would also like to thank the

Police in the theatre…
In early November, our French
Immersion students gathered in
the theatre to watch the French
movie: “De père en flic” (“Father
and Guns”) completely in French
with no subtitles! Not only was
this a nice way to spend an
afternoon but it was also great for
the students to measure their level of
comprehension of French. Most students said they
really enjoyed it.
DELF/DALF
Only a few more months and it will be the DELF/DALF
season. This year, Grade 12 FLA 30 /30I students
who are writing the DELF B2 or DALF C1 level, and
French 30 /30I students writing the DELF level B1 will
be able to do so at no cost to them.

Would you like to experience a different culture and
lifestyle? Why not apply for a student exchange?
The ATA Student Exchange Program immerses
second language learners in their language of study.
Students study in Germany, Japan, Spain or Quebec
for approximately 3 months and host their German,
Japanese, Spanish or Quebecois counterpart in
Alberta for 3 months.
Why go on exchange?
•
learn about other cultures and countries
•
practice your language skills or learn a new
language
•
gain intercultural communication and leadership
skills
•
develop long-lasting friendships
•
experience another way of life.
Please speak to your language teacher or to Mrs.
White in Room 420 for more details on participating
in one of these exchanges. The deadline for
applications is February 2013.
Counsellors have been busy trying to help students
make wise choices and plan for their futures. We

STUDENT COUNCIL
It’s been a busy semester for Harry Ainlay’s Student
Council and we cannot wait to tell you about all of
the fun we have been having at school this year.
The objective of this Science Work Experience would
be to provide students an opportunity to gain
valuable skills and experience in a science related
field. As well, students would gain credits that would
potentially boost their academic average.
For Scary Ainlay we brought back favorite events
including Doughnut Eating and the Monster Mash as
well as our annual Costume Contest. This year Titans
dressed up in creative and fun Halloween costumes
to win prizes that included gift cards to Southgate
and to our cafeteria.
If you are interested in providing an opportunity for a
Harry Ainlay student to gain science work
experience, please contact:
The 8th Annual Dodgeball Tournament concluded
with an epic battle in which the underdogs Scooby
Crew defeated the tournament favorite, Michael

Phelps Swim Team. This year the costumes were
better than ever and the Best Costume prize went to
Woody’s Dodgeball for their fun take on a Toy Story
theme. Harry Ainlay’s Student Council would like to
thank Blue Sky Limos, Famoso South Edmonton
Common, Mr. Al Rahmani and Mr. Ken Wright for
sponsoring the prizes for this much loved event.
Now that the holiday season is on its way, Titans are
working hard to give back to their community. Harry
Ainlay students will be heading to McKee Elementary
on the afternoon of December 21 to host a
Christmas party for all the students at the school, a
wonderful opportunity for our students to get
involved as role models for younger students. We
have also wrapped up an extremely successful
Helping Hampers campaign, with the help of
Geomeer, and will be providing Christmas hampers
that will last them for months to come for 10 families
in need in our local community. We were able to
raise $20,000 of food, gifts, household supplies and
money. Thank you to all the staff and students for
their support of this very important event in our
school.

The main objective of the Science Work Experience Program would be to provide
students an opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience in a science-related
field.
It would also provide Harry Ainlay students the opportunity to gain credits along with
potentially boosting their academic average.
The process would involve informing students about a science position through our
school communication networks, an application process and, possibly, an interview
with the company supervisor.
The positions could be volunteer or paid positions.
The minimum time required would be 75 hours either during the:
school year (September to June) or
summer (July to August)
During the school year, students could be available to work during the regular school
day depending on their class timetable as well as evenings and/or weekends.
If you would be interested in providing an opportunity for a Harry Ainlay student to
gain work experience with you or your company, please contact me.
