NEEA Helps Maximize Energy Efficiency The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) is a non-profit organization working to maximize energy efficiency to meet our future energy needs. NEEA is supported by, and works in collaboration with, the Bonneville Power Administration, Energy Trust of Oregon and more than 100 Northwest utilities on behalf of more than 12 million energy consumers. 12 MILLION ENERGY CONSUMERS NEEA Fills The Energy Efficiency Pipeline NEEA scans the market for potential energy efficiency opportunities and champions promising emerging technologies NEEA Accelerates Market Adoption NEEA intervenes to remove barriers to market adoption of energy-efficient products, services and practices NEEA Leverages the Power of the Region NEEA identifies and pursues opportunities that can only be achieved working regionally COST NEEA delivers long-term savings at low cost NEEA initiatives deliver savings long after the investment stops. The region has saved 707 aMW since 1997 at only 1.7¢ per KWh. VALUE TIME Why Does Energy Efficiency Matter? Energy efficiency is the most cost effective and sustainable way to meet our future energy needs. Efficiency can meet 85 percent of new demand for electricity over the next 20 years, saving us money, making us more competitive, and keeping the Northwest a healthy and vibrant place to live. What is NEEA Doing in Emerging Technology? NEEA’s Emerging Technology efforts fill the Northwest’s energy efficiency pipeline with new products, services and practices to meet our future energy needs. NEEA leverages the region’s knowledge and resources to scan and assess new technologies, and to drive availability and acceptance of energyefficient products appropriate for the unique needs of the Northwest. NEEA is on track to move initiatives with more than 300 aMW potential savings into full implementation by the end of 2014. Heat Pump Water Heaters Engaging manufacturers to produce HPWHs that meet the Northern Climate Specification with the long-term goal of impacting a federal standard. Industrial Refrigeration Operator Certification Introducing an ANSI-accredited, energy-efficient certification to Refrigeration System Operators in the industrial refrigeration market. High Performance Windows Developing a new strategic market intervention strategy for the next generation of high performance windows. Green Pumps Standardizing emerging techniques for refurbishing large industrial pumps back to their original state and integrating this as a standard business practice in the market. Agriculture-Irrigation Accelerating regional energy efficiency through more profitable agricultural irrigation tools and practices. NEEA also operates a number of scanning projects for evaluating and testing new technologies. Residential Test Bed Creating a proving ground for new energy-efficient products, services and practices, allowing researchers to conduct experiments under typical real-world operating conditions. Residential Economizers Assessing technology performance and delivery of residential economizers, which save energy at night by circulating outdoor air to cool homes rather than turning on the air conditioning system. Solid State Street Lighting Solid state streetlights use up to 50 percent less energy than traditional street lighting technologies. Adding control systems to these public lighting sources can add another 25 percent of energy savings potential, creating an energy savings of up to 115 average megawatts (aMW) each year for the Northwest. NEEA will be leveraging existing data to test visual acuity and cost-effectiveness of combining LED lighting with network control systems in a few pilot locations across the Northwest. In March, 2012, NEEA and a number of partners will conduct visual performance tests in Seattle. These tests will aid in evaluating the safety and efficacy of energy-saving LED streetlights, as well as helping determine acceptable standards for outdoor lighting illumination nationwide.
