Benefits of installing Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) insulation on old Asbestos Roof Sheets:
As SPF is a PERMANENT INSTALLATION, the following benefits will last as long as the building structure
onto which it is installed.
SPF is not affected by water, or moisture, and can handle a wide range of temperatures, but only needs
to be protected from solar radiation. It only requires coating with a good quality roof paint.
SPF Roofs that had been installed in this way, are lasting well over 30 years in places like the US, but will
last ‘indefinitely’ as long as the Top Coat is maintained.
SPF insulation has the best insulating R-value of any commercially available materials, and
because it is seamless, is the most efficient and economical method of regulating internal
temperatures of buildings (25mm thick SPF has a minimum R-value of 6).
Economical, because SPF is self-adhesive, requiring no additional mechanical fastening system.
Legal problems with Asbestos are solved by removing loose fibres and permanently
sealing/locking in of fibres on roof sheets. No further maintenance is required.
Condensation on the underside of roof sheets is eliminated, as the roof sheets are kept close
to internal ambient temperature.
Any gaps between roof sheets are filled and sealed ‘weather-tight’, eliminating potential leaks
–especially those caused by wind-driven rain.
Life span of roof -including roof sheets and fasteners, is greatly extended, as it is
permanently sealed and insulated from the elements and ‘attack’ from fungus and algae.
Thermal Shock, Corrosion and Microbes are the factors most affecting the life span of roof sheets,
and all these are eliminated by permanently preserving (Insulating and Sealing) in a
continuous layer of SPF Insulation (see note on Asbestos below)
Structural strength (rigidity) of roof sheets is increased significantly by adding SPF to it.
The specific top-coating over the SPF (e.g. “DURAM Roofkote”) is selected, for its durability. We
recommend colour White, as it lasts longer than pigmented coatings.
No interruption necessary with normal daily production/ commercial activities underneath.
(See further information supplied on disc, of “BASF Polyurethanes” Spray Polyurethane Foam)
Decay of Untreated Asbestos Roof Sheets:
If Asbestos Roof Sheets are left untreated or unpainted for too long, it will decay up to a point where
replacement is the only option. Thermal Shock, Vibration, Erosion and Microbes will keep destructing the
top-surface of the sheet and around fasteners, to a point where it will no longer be structurally safe.
Due to the dangers associated when working with Asbestos, inevitably the removal process of these roof
sheets alone can be quite costly (Regulated method; Special disposal; Disruption to production activities).
Cleaning and then coating an Asbestos Roof Sheet with ‘SPF’, is a permanent and far more cost-effective
solution to this problem, than replacement – and it installs the best insulation material, in the best
position –on top of the roof.
Example:
Progress photos of a roof recently insulated by INSUSEAL, with similar roof as needed for
TYDSTROOM at “Uitsig” Farm etc.
BEFORE →
Old “BIGSIX”profile ASBESTOS:
Large gaps at overlaps
Sheets cracked and corroded
No protection over asbestos
Thermal problems with heat,
cold and condensation.
DURING INSTALLATION →
After Asbestos roof had been cleaned (Government Regulated Methods)
Spray Polyurethane Foam is installed and Painted the following day

AFTER → “Spray Polyurethane Foam” Insulation installed and Old Asbestos Roof Transformed and Preserved:
All gaps permanently sealed
Sheets structurally improved
Asbestos permanently locked in
Roof seamlessly insulated with best performing material available
Roof sheets permanently protected from elements e.g. thermal shock; microbes; corrosion
A permanent solution - the only maintenance required will be a fresh coat of paint in 8 or more years.
