Base Straps, 24 ga. Baffles, and 26 ga. Sides, Ends, Skirts and Dampers will withstand wind loads of 100 MPH when adequately supported by the roof panel to which it is attached. Minimum required attachment is No. 14 self tapping screw to the top of each major roof panel rib. Wind load is determined in accordance with the MBMA Design Manual procedure. The following analysis could be construed as Parts and Portions of the building structure, such as load supporting systems of structural roof panels, purlins, bracing, and framing. The typical installation procedure for vents is to fasten each side skirt to the roof panel with a minimum of 1-#14 STS @ 12" o.c. (2 fasteners per linear foot of vent). Various Manufacturers test data has indicated that the resistance of these fasteners exceeds the design values used by Metallic Products by a factor in excess of 2 1/2 to 1. This design value is 50 lbs. pull out and 100 lbs. shear per fastener when installed in 26 ga. galvanized panels of 50,000 psi minimum yield stress. The probable extreme standard condition would be a roof with mean height of 60 ft. and a slope between 10 and 30 degrees (4/12 included). 1. Assume the clear distance at the ventilator between roof sheets to be 24" max. (This is probably greater than would occur for a 12" throat vent.) 2. Assume total vent is in “Z” edge strip. Building would have to be at least 100 ft.wide and 25 ft. high at the eave. 3. Velocity Pressure q = 30.4 PSF (100 MPH) (Table 5.2b in the MBMA Low Rise Building Systems Manual) 4. Se @ Interior edge from figure 5.5c, with roof angle between 10 and 30 degrees = 2.1 5. Uplift Pressure = 30.4 x 2.1 = 63.84 PSF. 6. Reduce because it is due to wind = 63.84 x 3/4 = 47.88 7777 Hollister Road Houston, Texas 77040 · Phone: 713.856.9696 · Fax: 713.856.9686 · 1.800.356.7746 · Email: info@mpvent.com · www.mpvent.com CV-01.5/1 / Rev. 8/01 Page 2 METALLIC PRODUCTS CONTINUOUS VENTILATOR DESIGN EVALUATION AND CERTIFICATION 12" Standard Throat Ventilator: The 24 inch ridge opening results in 2 x 47.88 = 95.76 lbs. per ft. uplift on ventilator or 47.88 lbs per fastener which is less than the 50 lbs. per fastener design stress. The ventilator is less than 2 ft. high resulting in a shear stress of less than 50 lbs./fastener from an equal horizontal wind load. The building design used to create this wind loading exceeds the dimensional parameters of most standard buildings offered by Metal Building Manufacturers. The location of the vent at the very end of the building ridge (within the “Z” edge strip) is not unusual when continuous vents are used for the full building length. However, a more common arrangement is to place the vents, one in the center of each bay or to begin the continous run, one ventilator back from the end wall peak. One of the most overlooked components of design and installation of architectural roofing systems, both in new construction and retrofit applications, is ventilation. A properly engineered ventilation system using a continuous ridge vent in conjunction with an under soffit intake will provide proper fresh air movement through the roofing system removing hot, stale air. Summer heat is released naturally, extending both the life and performance of the roof. During winter proper ventilation can assist in the control of condensation and other moisture problems such as rust and insulation deterioration. Ridge ventilators manufactured by Metallic Products are in accordance with the highest design requirements and specifica- tions. 25 years plus of experience in furnishing stationary, gravity-flow, continuous ridge ventilators has proven their efficient performance and lasting quality. Lo-profile floating ridge vents are a low-profile, aesthetically pleasing and extremely efficient means of ventilating standing seam roofs. Each unit is manufactured in 10' lengths and can be installed as a single unit or can be butted together to form a continuous run. By lapping the furnished joint covers over the top of the butted joints in a continuous run, the vent has the appearance of a single unit. Energy efficient. Architecturally attractive. Adaptable to many different roofing systems. No leaks. No snow infiltration. No bird nesting. No wind-driven rain infiltration. No heat and moisture buildup in attics. BUILDINGS MUST BREATHE! One of the most overlooked components of design and installation of roofing systems, both in new construction and retrofit applications, is ventilation. A properly engineered ventilation system using a proper ridge vent in conjunction with an under soffit intake will provide proper fresh air movement through the roofing system removing hot, stale air. Summer heat is released naturally, extending both the life and performance of the roof. During winter proper ventilation can assist in the control of condensation and other moisture problems such as rust and insulation deterioration. Ridge ventilators manufactured by Metallic Products are in accordance with the highest design requirements and specifications. 35 years plus of experience in furnishing stationary, gravity-flow, continuous ridge ventilators has proven their efficient performance and lasting quality. PreVent ridge vents are a low-profile, aesthetically pleasing and extremely efficient means of ventilating metal roofs. Each unit is manufactured in 8 or 10' lengths and can be installed as a single unit or can be butted together to form a continuous run, creating the effect of a seamless design. 7777 Hollister Road Houston, Texas 77040 · Phone: 713.856.9696 · Fax: 713.856.9686 · 1.800.356.7746 · Email: info@mpvent.com · www.mpvent.com SV-02 / Rev. 2/01 Dimensions and Applications Ridge Cap PreVent Model R-24 PreVent Model E-16 Roof Panel Air Flow Support Framing Eave Support Air Flow Closure RETRO FIT ROOF APPLICATION Ridge and Eave Vents 1⁄2" Ridge Cap 13⁄32" Air Flow 2" ARCHITECTURAL RIDGE DETAIL 1 1 ⁄ 2" 11⁄2" Cobra® Ridge Vent Material VENTILATING SLOTS Used on all models Property Test Values Air Permeability ASTM D737 >>760 cu. ft. per minute Tear and Tensile Strength ASTM D1294-86 Tear: Machine 25 p.p.i. Other sizes up to 48 - inch available through special orders. Assembly is completed by the installation of a 4 x 4 bird screen in the opening between the inner band and the rainshield to resist the entry of birds into the vent area. Integral Dampers Finish The addition of a vertical-lift type damper completes the weather-tightness of the unit. The damper is supported in the open position by four strong springs and is closed by a long pull chain. Damper may be locked in any position by the use of an optional key type chain lock (please specify when ordering.) Ventilator may be furnished without damper if desired. However, overspray or driven rain may enter the vented space. Ventilator with damper may function as a smoke exhaust vent by including a fusible link in the chain operator. Vents are furnished standard with white or galvalume finish, but are available in special colors when specifically ordered. Construction 26 gauge inner and outer bands, rainshield, and base assembly are assembled with four pre-formed baffles into a simple yet sturdy ventilation unit. This design achieves a free unobstructed flow of ventilation air. Base Design The base is specifically designed for the final installation, with specified roof slope; either ridge or single slope, and either flat or mounted into customer- furnished roof panel. Base and ventilating unit are furnished pre-assembled ready for installation. Single slope bases are mounted directly into roof panel and are placed in such a way as to prevent damming. Design Round gravity roof ventilators are designed for economical, low volume air movement to ventilate warehouses, light industrial buildings, attics, lofts and other buildings requiring gravity or relief ventilation. They also are adaptable for use as discharge heads for mechanical or forced air ventilation systems. The volume of gravity air movement can be controlled by the adjustable damper. The damper is also effective in controlling water intrusion from wind-driven rain and back draft conditions. Installation is by use of standard formed closures, tape sealant, caulking and fasteners as indicated on standard assembly drawings. When ordering, please specify roof slope and base type. A wooden crate is included in price. 7777 Hollister Road Houston, Texas 77040 · Phone: 713.856.9696 · Fax: 713.856.9686 · 1.800.356.7746 · Email: info@mpvent.com · www.mpvent.com RV-01 / Rev. 8/01 DIMENSIONS AND TECHNICAL DATA W RAIN SHIELD H W OUTER BAND OUTER BAND DAMPER RAIN SHIELD SCREEN H DAMPER CLOSURE TH DAMPER SCREEN DAMPER CLOSURE TH SPRING (4) INNER BAND RIDGE BASE SPRING (4) INNER BAND BAFFLE (4) BAFFLE (4) PULL CHAIN (5 FT.) The HI-EX is ideal for the “spot” ventilation of specific problem areas where rapid air removal is necessary or for general plant ventilation. This “plug-in” or package ventilation is easily installed out of the way, up on the roof. It is accessible and yet does not use valuable interior areas nor does it require costly duct systems. Dampers open automatically when the fan is started. The airstream holds the dampers open and excludes weather until the power is shut off. Then, the dampers automatically close tight as the air blast diminishes. All units are galvanized construction. DIMENSIONAL DATA HI-EX MODELS HC, HF L V - BELT DRIVE MODELS HC, HF FAN DIAM. HITESAVER MODEL HS V-BELT DRIVE RECOMMENDED FOR COMMERCIAL USE For applications where height is a consideration, Penn introduces the HiteSaver, Model HS. The HiteSaver features an extra-low profile. The propeller, motor and drive are recessed into the roof opening and extend below the roof line. Let’s start with a definition of what a roof curb is: A roof curb is a structure that creates a level surface on a sloped roof for mounting and supporting roof top equipment while retaining weather tightness. 1)STRUCTURAL STRENGTH: The curb is made of 16GA. welded steel. Each curb can hold thousands of pounds. Also, the curb is usually supported with a “red iron” package so the curb becomes part of the structure of the building and not just a cap that sits unsupported on the roof sheets. Together, the curb and the support form a strength not found by just setting the equipment on the roof without a curb. 2)WEATHER TIGHTNESS: The sides of the curb become an integral part of the roof itself. The curbs mesh with the roof sheets to form a weather tight barrier. In other words, the flanges of the curb are a part of the roof sheets. Also, these curbs have a water diverter angle to shed water around the curb and away from your rooftop equipment. 3)LEVEL MOUNTING SURFACE: As curb manufacturers, we rarely know what equipment will be mounted on our curbs. Usually, some type of motorized equipment is used; a fan, an air conditioner, an exhaust unit, a refrigeration unit, or a ventilator. Almost all motorized equipment is designed to work from a level mounting surface. 4)INSULATION: Optional 1 1/2" - 3lb density fiberglass insulation 7777 Hollister Rd Houston, Texas 77040 · Phone: 713.856.96964 · Fax: 713.856.9686 · 1.800.356.7746 · Email: info@mpvent.com · www.mpvent.com RC-02 / Rev. 2/01 L o u v e r s · V e n t i l a t o r s · T r i m · R o o f C u r b s · S p e c i a l t y I t e m s FABRICATED METAL BUILDING ROOF CURBS 1 – GENERAL A – The general conditions and supplemental general conditions of the contract apply to this section as if completely written herein. Note: Additional Support Columns and Pipe Hangers may be required for larger Canopies and/or higher wind loads. Step 1 Install Vertical Support Columns Step 1 Install Lower Support Bolts Install vertical support columns to girt framing. (Girt spacing max 6’0”) 1A - Center canopy over door. Mark wall at locations where pre-attached canopy rafter angle holes meet wall. 1A - Center canopy over door. If necessary, shift canopy towards door knob so that pipe hangers penetrate in the high or low areas of panel. When the canopy is positioned at the desired location match drill 9/16” holes through pre-drilled canopy angle holes. (These holes are aligned with the center of the zee rafter holes used for the pipe hangers at the wall attachment angle of the canopy). 1B - Align centerline of support columns with 9/16” holes drilled in step 1A. and centerline of zee rafters on canopy between girts. Make sure support columns are perpendicular to top and bottom girt. Attach mounting clips to each end of telescoping support columns with (2) 1/4” X 3/4” bolts and nuts per clip. Slide adjust columns to proper length in order to fit between girts (6 ft. maximum). Secure columns to girts with (2) 1/4” X 3/4” bolts and nuts per clip. 1B - Drill holes in masonry and install wall anchors sized to accept 1/2” bolts and appropriate design for masonry type. ( Note: wall anchors by others ) 1C - Insert 1/2” X 3” bolt with washer through canopy angle and into wall anchor. Step 2 Attach Pipe Hangers to Canopy 2A - Thread 1/2” nut on one end of the pipe hanger rod end, slide on 1/2” washer and insert into hole on top of canopy rafter. 2B - Secure with 1/2” nuts and washers on underside of rafter. Step 2 Install Lower Support Bolts Step 3 Attach Pipe Hangers to Wall 2A - Match drill through previously drilled holes in wall panel through centerline of support columns. 3A - Locate elevation at the point where opposite rod end will penetrate the wall. 2B - With canopy re-positioned and matching holes in canopy and wall panel aligned, attach canopy to wall panel and support column using 1/2” X 6” bolt with washer. (use PVC spacer sleeve if hole in wall panel is in low area of panel) (Typical each side) Note: before tightening bolts apply sealant at penetration points 3B - Drill holes in masonry and install wall anchors sized to accept 1/2” bolts and appropriate design for masonry. 3C - Thread rod end into wall anchor. 3D - Attach rod end to pipe hanger with clevis pin. Step 3 Attach Pipe Hangers to Canopy Step 4 Adjust Pitch of Canopy 3A - Thread 1/2” nut on the short rod end, slide on 1/2” washer and insert into hole on top of canopy rafter. Secure with 1/2” nuts and washers on underside of rafter. ( Typical for each pipe hanger assy. ) 4A - Adjust pipe hanger yoke ends, and/or short rod end at rafter, so the canopy slopes back toward wall 1/2” to 1” ( for rear mounted drains ). Step 4 Attach Pipe Hangers to Wall 4A - Locate the elevation at the point where long rod end will penetrate the wall ( adjust angle of pipe hanger to 45 degrees or as close as possible). Drill 9/16” hole through panel and support columns. Thread 1/2” nut on long rod end and slide on 1/2” washer. Insert long rod through wall panel and support columns. Secure at support column with 1/2” nuts and washers.( Note: before tightening, apply sealant at penetration under washer or decorative plate. ) Metal Wall Install PVC Spacer Sleeve 1/2” Flat Washer Nut or Decorative Plate 1/2” Pipe Hanger & 1/2” Rod End Adjustment (double nut) Step 5 Adjust Pitch of Canopy 5A - Adjust pipe hanger yoke ends, and/or short rod end at rafter, so the canopy slopes back toward wall 1/2” to 1” (for rear mounted drains ). 1/2” Pipe Hanger & 1/2” Rod End Sealant Nut & Washer Support Columns Install #14 STS Stich Screw (2 per Overlap) 1/2” X 6” Hex Bolt PVC Spacer Sleeve Drill 9/16” Hole for Rod Hanger Connection (Both Sides) CL Girt Spacing 6’ Max Masonry Wall Install 1/2” Flat Washer and Nut or Decorative Plate 1/2” Pipe Hanger and 1/2” Rod end Adjustment (double nut) CL Drill 9/16” Hole for Lower Bolt Connection Girt Wall Anchor (by Others) Masonry Wall 1/2” Pipe Hanger and 1/2” Rod end Nut & Washer Wall Anchor (by Others) Girt over Door C L of Support Channels to match CL of Canopy Rafters Support Column Nut & Washer Top Girt Mounting Clip install w/4 1/4” Bolts & Nuts Provided or 4 #14 STS 1/2” X 6” Rod End w/Nut & Washer Nut & Washer 1/2” Hex Bolt and Nut L o u v e r s · V e n t i l a t o r s · T r i m · R o o f C u r b s · S p e c i a l t y I t e m s CANOPY ERECTION INSTRUCTIONS - CASE 1 • Install vertical support columns to girt framing. Girt spacing should be between 2í9" and 6'0". • Locate center of canopy and door. Adjust towards knob so that rod supports pierce wall panel on high or low flat areas. Mark girts at desired length. • Attach clip angles 403 to inside bottom of column 401 and to inside top of column 402 with 2 1/ 2" bolts each. Insert column 402 inside column 401 (see Detail 1). • Adjust columns to proper length to fit between girts. Secure 401 and 402 together with 6 #14 • • • • • • • • • • sts on each column (2 ea fl. & Web). (See detail #1). With columns assembled, drill 9/16" diameter holes through 402 using holes in 401 flanges as guide. Locate columns in place back to back exactly 2'-10" apart at bottom (1'-5 1/8" each side of length of canopy). Attach to girts with 2-#14 sts at each end of column. Install upper hanger rod 404 (see detail 4). Using upper holes as guide, locate and drill a 9/16" hole in a wall panel. Insert long end of rod through wall (from exterior) and through one flange of column. Put one nut on rod and leave 1 1/2" thread. Place washer insert through inside flange. Place washer and second nut. Snug tight. Install lower support bolts 405 (see detail 4). Using lower holes in column as guide, drill two 9/16" holes in wall panel (3'-0" c/c). Insert bolt with washer through inside flange, through pipe sleeve, outside flange, 2 hex nuts and through wall panel. Tighten nut against column. Space last nut snug against inside of wall panel for low conditions (see detail 3). Add nuts as follows: From exterior, thread one nut tight against panel with sealant under nut; thread 2nd nut and locate at face of wall panel. This will position canopy (bolts 3'-0" c/c). Install canopy to support rods (see detail 5). Thread nut onto upper hanger rod. For high condition of wall panel (see detail 4), add sealant around bolt. Position canopy so that the two lower bolts enter holes nearest center with back of canopy resting on bolts. Add washer to upper rod, insert upper rods thru holes in top of supports beams. Add washer and hex nuts. Add washer and nuts to bolts. Raise lower nuts on upper rod until canopy slopes 1⁄2" to 1" towards building. Tighten all nuts. Finish with closure and sealant by others as recommended. ERECTION INSTRUCTIONS - CASE-2 • Locate desired bottom of canopy elevation on door jamb extensions. Measure up 3” and drill 2 9/16” holes 3’-3” apart (one each jamb) for lower support bolts. (It may be necessary to drill from exterior). • Install vertical support columns for upper hanger rod same as case 1, except center on holes in door jamb exterior and drill 9/16” holes 2-11⁄2” above holes in door jamb exterior. • • • Install upper hanger rod (same as case 1). Install lower support bolt (see detail 6). Install canopy to supports (same as case 1). 7777 Hollister Road Houston, Texas 77040 · Phone: 713.856.9696 · Fax: 713.856.9686 · 1.800.356.7746 · Email: info@mpvent.com · www.mpvent.com SI-01.2 / Rev. 2/01 L o u v e r s · V e n t i l a t o r s · T r i m · R o o f C u r b s · S p e c i a l t y I t e m s ICE SHIELDS… …engineered specifically for heavy snow and ice areas and provides protection from dangerous eave ice shear.
