I would like to welcome you and your child to this year’s Chemistry IGCSE course. The purpose of this
course is to provide exploratory experience, laboratory investigation, and real life application in the field
of Chemistry. I will do all that I can to help you and your child have a wonderful and successful school
year. As a result, I would like to make you aware of my classroom procedures and your child’s
responsibilities.

The following are the major themes our Chemistry course will include, but not limited to the following
content:

Basic Class Rules
There is no time to be wasted on disruptive behavior. Therefore, everyone is expected to follow some
simple but important rules at all times. These are in addition to the rules and regulations stated in the
Student Discipline Handbook.
1. Arrive on time and take your seats.
2. Be prepared and take out necessary materials.
3. RESPECT your peers, yourself, the school and your teacher.
4. Do not leave your seats until you have been dismissed by the teacher.
5. No personal grooming, eating or gum chewing during class.
6. Follow all school rules such as uniform policy
7. No derogatory, abusive or profane language will be allowed.
8. The bell DOES NOT dismiss you, the teacher DOES. Please remain in your assigned seat
until you are dismissed.
9. The use of ANY type of electronic device is prohibited unless instructed to do so.
SPECIAL NOTE TO THE PARENTS: If you need to contact your child, call the school office and they will notify us. Please do
NOT call or text your child during class time. The use of cell phones during class time is prohibited.
Consequences
Any student whose behavior disrupts the learning of another student or who breaks school or class rules will
encounter one or more of the following consequences:
1. A general warning
2. Detention
3. Written or verbal parental notification
4. A parent/teacher/ student conference
5. The student will not be allowed to participate in any lab activities and will receive a failing grade for the
specific activity.
6. Referral to an administrator.
* It is important that each student adheres to these rules so that the safety of all in the classroom will be assured.
Laboratory Procedures and Safety Rules
1. All students must pay a $ (TBA) lab fees for the entire school year. (Dates will be announced,
through homework assignment, for students to bring their money)
2. Students will treat all science materials and “consumable” supplies with respect and care.
3. Students will learn to use caution when handling all scientific equipment, such as chemicals,
glassware, scales, etc.
4. Students will learn and follow all laboratory safety rules that will be given in detail during the first week
of school.
5. For security reasons, book bags must be kept under your seat or in a designated area and free from
any of the walkways or paths in the classroom.
6. Students, in addition, may be asked to purchase materials and supplies that will be conducted during
the school year.
Violation of ANY rule will result in a “zero” for the assignment.
Academic Procedures and Requirements
1. Students WILL turn in all class work, home learning assignments and projects NEAT, READABLE, and on
time. NO work may be turned in typed unless specified.
2. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!
3. Students will participate in ALL class discussions, activities, and lab investigations. It is expected that
proper and civil conduct will be shown during the whole class period. This includes the raising of one’s
hand to speak during a discussion.
4. Home learning assignments will be assigned at least two to three days per week. It may consist of
reading, hand-outs, lab write-ups, studying for tests and quizzes, completing class assignments, drawing
diagrams, etc.
5. All assignments turned in must be properly formatted and include your name, date, and period number.
Works with no name WILL NOT BE GRADED.
Attendance







If you need to be absent, please be aware of the following:
Your teacher cannot keep track of who was absent and which are the assignments each student missed.
When a student is absent from school he/she is responsible for requesting the work from the teacher,
their lab partners, or a reliable student.
The make-up work is expected to be completed the next time the student attends class after returning to
school.
There is absolutely no make-up of laboratory activities.
If a student is absent from a laboratory activity he/she must do an assignment of equal value to make-up
the grade.
If a student is absent from a test, he/she will be allowed to make-up the test ONLY if the absence is
permissible and it will be administered before or after school, not during class.
Attendance is related to success:
Being present and participating of the learning process will help you to understand the concepts covered in class.

Special note: Tests and culminating exams will be graded based on the mark scheme used by
Cambridge University at the time of the test. Quizzes and exams will be based on past papers and
examinations in the PRE AICE level as needed.
Materials List
The following is a list of supplies you will be required to have for this class. The student is required to
bring the following materials by the beginning of the second week of school and have with them
DURING EVERY MEETING OF CLASS:
1. 1 line composition notebook for your lab reports.
I WILL NOT accept spiral notebooks or other sizes than the ones
specified in the picture. (regular size notebooks)
2. A three rings binder or folder with line and graph paper that can hold the
sections for each topic. In each one we will include:
i. Syllabus section for the chapter
ii.
Vocabulary
iii.
Lecture notes
iv.
Class work and Home learning/ handouts
v.
Exams or past papers worksheets (If applicable)
3. #2 pencils or mechanical pencils.
4. Eraser (or correction tape) LIQUID corrector not allowed.
5. Black or blue ink pens for writing and red or green pen/pencil for grading.
6. Metric Ruler (if transparent, better)
7. Dry eraser markers (One black or blue and another in any color)
8. Scientific Calculator - every class.
9. Hand Sanitizer * (Optional)

Laboratory wish List 2015-2016
This is a list of materials that we will be using as a group during the year. It is a WISH LIST. Every time
we build a lab report you will be using ruler, graph paper and scissors. These materials will be provided
by me. The following is a list of the consumables and materials you should bring to class every day but I
prefer to ask for them at the beginning of the year so you do not have to carry them all along.
You can choose 3 any elements from this list to bring. Items in bold are preferred. You do not need to
buy new things. May be you have a scientific calculator that you do not use anymore and it can be really
useful in our class.
- Letter size file folders
(Color: manila).
- Letter size file folders
(Color: red, green or blue)
- Graph paper
- Dishwashing detergent
- Plastic transparent tape small
- Paper Towels
- Clorox®, Fabuloso®, Windex® or any liquid cleaning
Pipe brushes, sponges etc, microfiber
product
cloths, etc.
- Color Copy Paper “bright colors”
- Clear plastic cups and or
- Sharpie markers, assorted colors
- Styrofoam cups (small)
- Stackable plastic trays or stackable plastic containers
(several sizes) (similar to Tupperware)
-Iron wool (without soap) you can get them in Home
