Some Facts about LED Lights:
• Light-emitting diode (LED), is a semiconductor light source
• They use only 15-25% of the electricity of traditional lighting
• Most installations recoup investment in 5 months to 1.5 years
• LEDs create much less heat than conventional bulbs, so your air conditioning bills will go
down, and you will never burn your fingers again when changing a light bulb or spotlight
• LED lights last 10-25 years depending upon usage (20,000 to 50,000 hours). Imagine only
changing a light bulb once every 20 years!
• LEDs contain no lead or mercury and are environmentally friendly.
Some LED History:
1927:Russian Oleg Vladimirovich Losev created the first LED light. His research was distributed
in Russian, German and British scientific journals, but no practical use was made of the
discovery for several decades.
1962:The first (red) LED was developed by Nick Holonyak Jr., while working at General Electric
Company. Holonyak is seen as the “father of the light-emitting diode”.
1972:M. George Craford, a graduate student of Holonyak, invented the first yellow LED and
improved the brightness of red and red-orange LEDs.
2002:Processes for growing gallium nitride LEDs on silicon were successfully demonstrated.
2008: A luminous efficacy of 300 lumens of visible light per watt of radiation and warm-light
emission was achieved by using nanocrystals.
2011:Zhong Li Wang from the Georgia Institute of Technology discovered that the energy
efficiency of LED’s can be increased by 400% by using zinc oxide nanowires.
2015:Today, LEDs using latest technology, offer stable, accurate color temperature, higher
lumens per watt, and by controlling heat dissipation, can now offer much stronger
lighting solutions. Latest generation of LEDs, have greater reliability and improved
performance with lower cost. This means faster ROI, and a more cost effective solution
over the lifespan of the light.
