THE OPPORTUNITY

The Executive Director of the Carle Center for Research Excellence will demonstrate a high level of
achievement in obtaining research funding, developing research opportunities and par tnerships and
promoting connections between on-going research, education and their practical applications.
Carle is known for its clinical excellence through collaboration with the University of Illinois, Carle
Physicians, and the Carle Foundation Hospital. A partnership with the University’s world -class
researchers exemplifies our dedication to improving research capacity and successfully translating
bench research into meaningful health outcomes.
The Carle Center for Research Excellence coordinates and supports investigator initiated research,
resident research, translational research, nursing research and clinical trials. The Carle Tissue
Respository, for example, demonstrates the diversity of research activities. This clinically
progressive organization recruits highly sought after sub-specialty clinicians who seek viable and
attractive research opportunities.
Success is evident in Carle’s many organizational awards and distinctions—Magnet Status, DNV
Accreditation, named number one in the State for critical care, neurosciences and neurosurgery in
2013, listed # 6 on US News and World Report’s 2012-13 list of best hospitals.
Our new nine-story Heart and Vascular Institute extends Carle’s national-caliber heart program
bringing together experts and technology. The Mills Breast Cancer Center shares a building with our
new state-of-the-art Biomedical Research Center, a showcase of labs and technology supporting the
partnership between Carle and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. For more than 30
years, Carle Cancer Center has been involved in national research and currently participates in more
than 100 clinical trials.
The successful candidate will bring a business model approach to Carle Research and engage a wide
variety of people in our research enterprise. He or she will possess knowledge and experience in
traditional and non-traditional funding, new program development, compliance, Institutional Review
Board, and other areas of research administration.

Position Summary:
The Executive Director will also be accountable for overseeing all
administrative duties associated with scientific and clinical research studies. Familiarity with all
aspects of basic and clinical research within an academic environment is essential, as well as a strong
business acumen, and the ability to facilitate the development of novel research programs in a complex
clinical and research environment.
The Executive Director position is highly visible and will collaborate with university, pharmaceutical
and government communities. The position plays a key role in future planning and the continuous
improvement of all activities at the Carle Center for Research Excellence. Specific responsibilities
include: financial analysis and strategy; contract negotiations; contract processing and management;
providing direction to and ensuring integrity in data management; ensuring compliance with granting
organizations, regulatory agencies, and collaborating institutions; working with the technology
department and other strategic partners; managing facilities; business development and marketing.
Educational Requirements:
PhD highly preferred; demonstrated success in competitive research
grants; and combined with an MBA or JD with 8 years of healthcare
research experience.
Experience:
Three years of experience at senior/director level within a healthcare
related research enterprise.
Other Knowledge/Skills:
- Must possess strong leadership and business skills with excellent
interpersonal, communication, and administrative skills.
- Experience or significant understanding of the healthcare research
environment including information technology, IRB, Health Systems
and Policy research, and research compliance.
- Additional knowledge areas include Protected Health Information
(PHI) and HIPAA, research contracting and application of indirect costs,
grant administration and financial oversight of research activities.
- Demonstrated ability to formulate, negotiate and lead research efforts.
- Experience with collaborative research between industry and academia.
- Proven ability to develop individuals and build a successful team.

Responsibilities:
Holds supervisory and budgetary responsibilities; works effectively with
executive leadership to formulate proposals for research projects;
provides oversight, direction and leadership for grant maintenance,
renewal, and new grant acquisition; conducts pre-award and post-award
grant process improvement initiatives; ensures adherence to and
compliance with applicable state and federal government regulations,
and expectations of funding sources; consistently demonstrates support
of the Carle mission, strives for excellence and contributes to team
efforts; accountable for preparation and monitoring operations budget
and achieving budgetary success on an annual basis; responsible for
overseeing the operational payment structure, monitoring payments
and billing as outlined in project contracts for all funded studies.
Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Vice President, Research and Graduate Medical
Education.
Internal Relationships:
Physicians, scientists, nurses, GME residents/fellows, and other
clinical professionals and scholars.
External Relationships:
Academic partners, specifically the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and
other potential partners in the healthcare research environment.

This is a unique position that offers the successful candidate the
opportunity to play a major role in the integration and translation of
clinical research from a large non-profit health system with a top ten
research university. This collaborative research leads to improved
community health through access to cutting edge treatment protocols
and new discoveries in medicine.
