Introduction
Priorclaveautoclavesarearangeofgeneralpurposelaboratoryautoclavesintendedprimarilyfor
mediapreparation,themakingsafeofordinarylaboratoryandpathologicalwasteandother
apparatussterilisationpurposes.Theautoclavesaremanufacturedtoahighstandardandfeaturea
numberofpatentedinnovativedesignfeatures.ThesophisticatedTACTROLmicroprocessorcontrol
systemprovidesaverysimplemethodofsettingeventhemostcomplexcycles.Themachineshave
beendesignedfromtheoutsetforeasyandsafeoperationandmaintenance.
Properlylookedafterandservicedyourautoclaveshouldgiveyearsofvaluableandtroublefree
service.

ImportantNoticesandWarnings
PriorclavePressureVesselsandAutoclavesaremanufacturedaccordingtoBS2646Part1
(1993).Itisrecommendedthattheuser/operatorensuresthattheautoclaveisinstalled,
operated,maintainedandtestedaccordingtoparts2,3,4&5ofthisstandardforsafeand
effectiveuseandthatanadequateloggingrecordofoperationandmaintenancebe
established.
BeforedespatchfromourworksallPriorclavesaresubjectedtorigorouselectricalsafetytests
totheappropriatestandards.Shouldyouoryourcontractorscarryoutfurtherinsulationand
flashtestsaspartofyourinternalprocedurespleasedisconnecttheswitchmodepower
supplybeforetesting.Failuretodosowillresultinatestfailureandmayleadtocorruptionof
themicroprocessormemorywhichcannotbecoveredbyourwarranty.
Safety
Ifyouareunclearaboutanyaspectsofthismanual,theuseandoperationoftheautoclaveor
yourautoclaveprocesspleasecontactPriorclaveoryourauthorisedPriorclavedealerbefore
proceeding.
Alwayswearglovesafacemaskandadequateprotectiveclothingwhenunloadingan
autoclaveandensurethattheworkloaddoesnotexceedsafelimits.
Priorclavearepleasedprovidetrainingforoperatorsintheuseoftheirautoclavesatasmall
extracharge.
ThermalLock
ThesafetyThermalLock(80oCdoorretentiondevice)hasbeensetinaccordancewiththe
loadandproceduredefinedinparas.3.3.3.2.3and3.3.3.3ofBS2646Part5:1993.
Therelativelylightloaddefinedunderthisproceduremaynotbeappropriatetotheloadto
beautoclavedinyourPriorclave.Therefore,toensurecompliancewithHealth&Safety
ExecutiveGuidanceNotePM73‘SafetyatAutoclaves’andtoavoidpossibleinjuryyouare
stronglyadvisedtohaveyourautoclavewithitsnormalworkingloadformallyvalidated,and
thethermallocksetupaccordinglybyproperlytrainedpersonnel.
StainlessSteelPressureVessels.
Vesselsaremanufacturedfromgrade316stabilisedstainlesssteel,designedbuiltandtested
inaccordancewithPD5500category3asrequiredbyBS2646Part1.Grade316stainlesssteel
isemployedtoreducethecorrosiveeffectsofsubstancessuchashydroxidesandchlorine.
Howeverwerecommendthattheinteriorofthevesseliskeptfreeofsuchpotentiallyharmful
substancesandisregularlycleanedoutwithsoftwater.Theuseofchlorinebasedorother
aggressivecleanersisnotrecommended.Exposuretosuchchemicalscoulddamagethe
surfacefinishandtheintegrityofthepressurevesselanddoor.Careshouldalsobetakennot
toroutinelyintroducesuchchemicalswheretheyareusedtoprewashitemsthatformpart
oftheload.Insuchcasestheitemsshouldbethoroughlyrinsedbeforeautoclaving.
ProductLife
Duetofatigueoccurringinnormalusethelifeofallpressurevesselsisfiniteregardlessof
corrosion,erosionorotherdamage.UsingcalculationsfromPD5500,andassumingworkingat
themaximumworkingpressureof2.4barthisgivestheautoclavevesselaprojectedfatigue
lifeof15,000operatingcycles.Thelifespanoftheautoclavewillobviouslydependupon
frequencyofuse,butforexample(basedona365dayworkingyear)iftheautoclaveisused
twoorfourtimesperdaythisgivesaworkinglifeof20.5to10.2yearsrespectively.Yourown
usageoftheautoclaveshouldbeconsideredtodeterminetheactuallifespanofthe
autoclave.
Cleaning
Thisequipmentcontainssensitiveelectricalequipment.Althoughdesignedtowithstand
laboratoryconditionsitisnotdesignedforwetcleaning.Cleaningthisequipmentbyhosing
downmaycausedamage,invalidatingthewarranty,andmaycauseanelectrocutionhazard.
Externalcleaningshouldbecarriedoutwithadampclothorwithproprietary,nonabrasive
cleaners.
WaterSupplyandQuality
Thisautoclavehasbeendesignedtooperatemosteffectivelywithasoftenedwatersupply.
Connectiontoahardwatersupplycanleadtoabuildupofscaleandwilldamagetheheaters
andotherpartsofthesystemandcouldinvalidatethewarranty.
Equallydemineralised,distilledorROwatersuppliesshouldnotbeusedwiththisautoclaveas
thecontrolsfittedrelyonelectricalconductivitytodetectwaterlevels.
ROwaterwilldamagesomeelementsofthegeneratorsystem.
ServicingandMaintenanceofPriorclaveAutoclaves
PriorclaveLaboratoryAutoclavesarecomplexpressuresystemsdesignedandbuilttospecial
regulationsandassuchshouldonlybeservicedormaintainedbyproperlytrainedpersonnel.
PriorclaveLtd.cannotbeheldresponsibleforhazardsordamageresultingfromworkcarried
outonthepressuresystemincludingitsclosurecomponentsbyuntrainedorunauthorised
personnel.IfindoubtpleasecontactPriorclaveServiceoryournearestauthorisedservice

PreparingYourPriorclaveforUsefortheFirstTime
Unpacktheautoclaveandcheckagainstthedeliverynotethatallitemsorderedhavebeen
delivered.
AnyshortagesordamagemustbereportedtoPriorclavewithin7daysofdelivery.
Positioning
Whenpositioningtheautoclaveconsiderationshouldbegiventoproperaccessforservicing
andmaintenancepurposes.Spacemustalsobeallowedforpipeworkandelectrical
connections.
Theautoclavehascastorsfittedtoallowpositioningandshouldideallybepositionedwithin
easyreachofasuitableisolatableelectricalsupplyanddrain.SeeInstallation.
Allautoclavesduringtheirprocesscyclewillreleasesteamandheat,andthisshouldbetaken
intoconsiderationwhenchoosingasiteinyourlaboratoryinwhichtoinstallyourautoclave
AntiTipfeet
Beforeopeningthedoorscrewdownthetwoantitipfeet(fittedunderthecoveratthefront
oftheautoclave)tofloorlevel.
LockNut
Oncetheautoclavehasbeenfinally
positioned,thesefeetshouldbesecurely
tightenedontothefloorwithaspanner.
Thelocknutsshouldthenbetightenedup
tothebottomoftheautoclaveframe.
Foot
Maintenanceaccess
ItisstipulatedbyBritishStandard2646thatautoclavesshouldhave1metreclearspaceall
roundtoallowforserviceaccess,butwerecognisethatthiscanbedifficulttoprovide.At
minimumwewouldrecommendaminimumof500mmclearspaceallround.Ifitisnot
possibletoprovidethisallrounditmaybeacceptabletoprovidespacetoonesideonly
providedtheautoclaveserviceconnectionscanbemadesuchthattheautoclave(ifsize
permits)canbemovedwithoutdifficulty.Inthecaseofallpipeconnectionsprovisionshould
bemadetoensurethatrigidpipeworkcanbereadilydisconnected.
Aspacetotherearoftheautoclaveofupto300mmcanberequiredtoaccommodatepipe
workconnections.Thiswillreduceformoresimpleinstallationssuchasautoclaveswithout
vacuumsystems.Forautoclaveswithdraincondensersthisspaceshouldbeincreasedto
500mm.Therequirementsformostadditionalitemsaredescribedlater.
Heatemission
Regardlessofinsulationarrangementsetcemployedtoreducethetemperatureofthe
autoclaveoutercasingallautoclaveswillemitheatintotheworkarea.Forthecomfortofstaff
itisrecommendedthatautoclavesareinstalledinairconditionedareas.Heatoutputfromthe
autoclavewillvaryatdifferentstagesofthecycle.Forthepurposeofcalculatingloading
placedontheairconditioningsystembytheautoclaveitshouldbeadequatetoallowfora
figureofonethirdofthetotalheaterpoweroftheautoclave,althoughtheactualoutputwill
varyaccordingtotheautoclavesettingsused.
Aircooledautoclavescoolmorequicklyinacoolroom,andthereforehighambient

temperaturesincreaseautoclavecycletimes.Thiscanbecomeparticularlyproblematicifthe
ambienttemperatureexceeds35oC
Steamemission
Ifcorrectlyinstalledasdescribedbelow,thereshouldbenosteamemittedtotheworkarea
duringoperation,theremayhoweverbesomesteamemittedwhentheautoclavedooris
opened.Undernormalcircumstancesthethermalcoolinglockwillpreventthedoorfrom
beingopeneduntilmostofthesteaminthechamberhascondensed,howeverundercertain
circumstancessuchasthewhenthethermalcoolinglockoverrideisusedsignificantamounts
ofsteamcanbereleased.Considerationshouldbegiventohowthissteammayaffectsmoke
andheatdetectorsetc.
Floorloading
A700litreautoclaveweighsintheregionof1000kg.Particularlyinthecaseofrefurbishment
ofanolderbuildingitwillbenecessarytoconsiderthestrengthoftheflooronwhichthe
autoclaveisstood.Itissometimes,althoughrarelynecessarytofilltheautoclavevesselwith
wateratsomestageduringitslifespaninordertoconductahydrostaticpressuretest.Itmay
beprudenttotakeaccountofthisadditionalweightwhenconsideringthefloorloading.In
normaluselargerautoclavescanbeloadedwithconsiderableadditionalweight.
ExtractorHoods
Anextractorhoodfittedabovetheautoclavewilleliminateanyremainingdifficultiesrelated
tosteamemission,andwillalsobebeneficialinreducingheatbuildup.Autoclavesusedfor
processingwastematerialsmayproduceunpleasantodours,theautoclavingofwasteplastic
waremayalsoproducepotentiallyharmfulfumes,theeffectsofthesewillalsobeminimised

thecaseoftoploadingautoclavesthisshouldbepositioneddirectlyabovetheautoclave.In
thecaseoffrontloadingautoclavesthehoodshouldextendbeyondthefrontoftheautoclave
byapproximately700mm.Thiswillbesufficienttominimisesteamandfumeemissioninto
theworkarea,butitmayalsobedesirabletoextendtheareaofthehoodtocovertheentire
autoclavetoreducetheamountofheatreleasedintotheroom.Inthecaseofdirectsteam
heatedautoclavesitmayalsobeadvisabletoarrangethehoodorincomingsteamsupplyin
suchawayastocovertheincomingsteamsupplypipeworkandreducingvalvesetc.Thiswill
furtherassistintheeliminationofheatbuildupwithintheworkarea.
ProvisionofSpaceandAccessforAccessories
Autoclaveswithdraincondensers
Draincondensersarefittedtotherearpaneloffrontloadingautoclaves,andrequire
sufficientspacetobeallowedforpipeworktoenterthecondenser.Draincondensersfortop
loadingautoclavesmaybesuppliedasseparateunitsifthereisnotsufficientspaceavailable
intheautoclavelocationandinsuchcasesconsiderationshouldbegiventowherethe
condenseristobelocatedasitmaynotbepracticaltositethistotherearoftheautoclave.
Draincondensersmayoperateathightemperaturedependingonfinalsettings,and
effectivenessofthecoolingwatersupply.Considerationshouldbegiventoheathazardswhen
decidingonthelocationofacondenser.
Whenallpipeworkiscompletethecondenserwilloccupyaspaceofapproximately300x
500mm.

Autoclaveswithexhaustfiltration
Thelocationofexhaustfilterswillvaryaccordingtotheindividualspecificationofthe
autoclave.Inthecaseofrectangularvesselautoclavethefilterisusuallyfittedinsidethe
autoclavevessel,andinsuchcasesfurtherconsiderationofthefilterlocationisnotnecessary.
Inthecaseoftoploadingandsmallerfrontloadingautoclavesitisnotpossibletolocatethe
filterinsidethevesselduetospaceconstraintsandlimitationsofcurrentlyavailablefilter
mediums.Itisthennecessaryforthefiltertobelocatedinaseparatepressurevesseloutside
oftheautoclave.Externalexhaustfilterhousingsarelocatedtotheupperrearofthe
autoclave,andprotrudefromthelefthandsideasviewedfromthefrontoftheautoclaveby
upto200mm.Innormalcircumstancesthefilterhousingwillfitintothe300mmspacealready
providedtotherearoftheautoclave.Specialarrangementsforthelocationofexhaustfilters
canbemadeonrequest.
Itisnormalforexhaustfilterhousingtoreachtemperaturesinexcessof100oC,therefore
considerationshouldbegiventoheathazardswhendecidingonthelocationofanautoclave
withanexhaustfilter.Provisionshouldbemadetoprotectpersonnelfromheathazardswhist
maintainingadequateaccessforfilterreplacement.Aminimumheightof500mmisrequired
abovethetopofthefilterhousingforreplacementofthefilter.
Provisionshouldbemadetoguardorinsulatepipesexitingtheautoclavewherethesemay
presentaheathazard.

amountsofsteamwillbereleasedfromtheautoclaveatdifferentstagesofthecycle.The

directedtoasealeddischargesystem;thesystemshouldleadbydirectconnectiontoa
buildingdrainorcatchmenttank.
Anopentundishisnotsuitableforthedischargelineofalaboratoryautoclave,whichistobe
usedforamakesafeprocess.
Thesealeddischargesystemshouldbeventedtoahighlevelbyapipenotlessthan30mm

IncaseofanydoubtthefulltextofBS2646shouldbeconsulted.
Theautoclaverequiresasealedconnectiontoatrappedbuildingdrain.Thisdrainshouldbe
providedwithaheatresistantventpipeof30mmminimumdiameterventedfreelyto
atmosphereatasafelocationoutsidethebuilding.Caremustbetakeninthedesignofthe
drainageconnectiontoensurethatanairbreakwillbepreservedatalltimestopreventthe
autoclavefromsuckingwaterbackfromthedrainasitcools.Excessivebackpressure
producedbyrestrictionsintheventpipemayimpairthefunctionoftheautoclave.Notethat
atsomestagesofthecycletheautoclavemaydischargesteamunderpressure,andifvent
flowisinadequatesteammaybeforcedtoexitviaotherinterconnecteddrains.
Ifpossibleitisalwaysadvisabletoconnecttheautoclavetoadraintocutdownonthe
amountofsteamdischargedintothelaboratory.Acompressionfittingshouldbe
incorporatedinthedrainpipeinaneasilyaccessiblelocationtoenableeasydisconnectionfor
maintenancepurposes.
Alldrainpipingshouldheaddownwardtowardsthedraintopreventwatercollectinginthe
pipe.
Attentionshouldbepaidtothematerialoftheventpipeassteamandwaterdischargedfrom
theautoclavecanbeattemperaturesinexcessof100oC.Inthecaseofautoclaveswithpulsed
freesteaming,vacuumdrying,andvacuumcoolingitmaybeadvisabletofitadrain
condensertocooltheautoclavedischarge,andcondensethesteam.
Thedrainandventpipeshouldbeinplacepriortocommencementofinstallationby
Priorclave.Itwillthenbepossibletomakeconnectionsfromtheautoclavedirectlyintothe
drainageservicesprovided.
Thepointwhereconnectionfromtheautoclavetothedrainagesystemismadeshouldbe
within2metresoftheautoclave.Thelocationofindividualconnectionsisshownonthe
installationdrawings.
Multipleautoclavesinasinglelocation
Ifmorethanoneautoclaveistobeinstalledatasinglelocationthentheservicesdescribed
needtobeprovidedforeachautoclave.Ifmorethanoneautoclaveisutilisingthesamedrain
and/orventarrangement,thentheremaybeproblemsduetocrossflowofeffluentbetween
autoclaves.Forexampleifoneautoclaveisbeingloadedbytheoperatorwhilsttheotherisin
thefreesteamingstage,thenitmaybepossibleforhotairandsteambeingdischargedby
oneautoclavetoentertheotherpresentingahazardtotheoperator.Ifcommonservicesare
tobeshareditisessentialthatthesearesufficientlyisolatedfromoneanothertoprevent
crossflow.
SafetyValve
Allautoclavesarefittedwithanoverpressuresafetyvalvetoprotecttheautoclavefromover
pressurisation.Thisvalvewillemitlargevolumesofsteamintheeventoftheautoclave
exceedingitsmaximumworkingpressure.Itisarequirementduringsafetyvalvefunction,and
routinetestingtobeabletoseeandhearifthesafetyvalvehasoperated.
ItisPriorclave’spreferredpolicytodirectthesafetyvalveoutlettodischargetothefloorat
therearoftheautoclave,howeversomeestablishmentsprefersafetyvalveoutletstobe
pipedtoahighleveloutsidethebuilding.
Ifthisisrequiredthepipeworkforthisshouldbeprovided,andterminatedwithin1metreof
thesafetyvalvedischargepointattherearoftheautoclave.Allsafetyvalvepipeworkshould
beDN25.Adrainagepointshouldbeprovidedatthelowestpointofthesafetyvalvepipe
work.Thisshouldbeapipeofapproximately6mmID,andshouldbepositionedtodischarge
intoasuitablereceptacletotherearoftheautoclave.Novalveshouldbefittedtothis
drainagepointtherebyallowingittoactasa“telltale”indicatingifthesafetyvalveis
operating.
Undernocircumstancesmustanyisolatingvalvebefittedtothesafetyvalvepipework.
Externalpipeworkmustbedesignedtobeselfdraining,andundernocircumstancesshould
waterbeabletocollectinatrap,whichcouldfreezeincoldweather.SeealsoBS3970part1
1990,sections7.2.4and7.2.5.
Autoclaveswithwatertanksanddriptrays
Aseparatedrainisrequiredfortheconnectionofwatertankanddriptrayoutlets.Thismay
beacommonconnectiontothesamedrainagesystemasabove,butinsuchcasesasufficient
levelofisolation(suchasadeeptrap)isrequiredtopreventthecrossflowofsteambetween
thedrains.Thedriptrayandwatertankoverflowcanbeconnectedtoanopentundishif
desired.Thishastheadvantageofmakinganydischargefromtheoverflowvisible,whichisin
accordancewithwaterbylaws.

TheWaterSupply(WaterFittings)regulations1999
Note:Thefluidcategoriesbelowrelateonlytotheaboveregulations,andareinnoway
connectedwiththecontainmentcategoriespreviouslydiscussedwithreferencetodrainage
andcontainmentofpathogens.
ItismandatorythatthecompletedinstallationcomplieswiththeWaterSupply(Water
Fittings)regulations1999–SINo1148.Thiswillbedependentonfactorsoutsideofthe
autoclavesuchasthelayoutofthewatersupplyprovided.Thelocationandusageofthe
autoclavewilldeterminethefluidcategoryforwhichbackflowpreventionmeasuresareto
betaken,howeveritissuggestedintheguidancenotestotheaboveregulationsthatall
laboratoriesinindustrialandcommercialinstallationsareconsideredcategory5.Prevention
measuressuitableforfluidsinthiscategorymaythereforeneedtobeconsidered.
Thebackflowpreventionmeasuresalreadyprovidedwithintheautoclaveareasfollows:
AutoclaveswithAutomaticWaterFillSystemsandLiquidRingVacuumPumps
Waterisfedtotheautoclavevesselandvacuumpumpviaaheadertankwithairgapand
circularoverflow,whichisclassifiedtypeAF.Thisalonewillprovidebackflowprevention
measuressuitableforfluidsuptocategory4.Providedthatthesupplytotheautoclaveis
deliveredviaaheadertankwithsimilarpreventionmeanselsewhereinthebuildingthe
installationwillformanairgapwithinterposedcisternoftypeAUK,whichissuitableforfluids
uptocategory5.Separateheadertanksforeachofthesefunctionsareprovidedallowingthe
automaticwaterfilltanktobefedfromatreatedwatersupply,andthevacuumpumptobe
fedfromanuntreatedsupplytoeconomizeontheuseoftreatedwaterifrequired.

AutoclaveswithWaterCooledCondensersandWaterJackets
Forinstallationsfallingintolowerfluidcategoriesitwillbepossibletousemechanicalmeans
topreventbackflowsuchasaverifiablesingle,ornonverifiabledoublecheckvalve.For
higherfluidcategoriesnonmechanicalmeanssuchasbreaktanksmustbeapplied.Duetothe
pressureandflowratesrequiredforthecondenserstoworkeffectivelyitisnotpracticalto
provideheadertankslocallytotheautoclave.Thecondenserandorjacketwillworkmore
effectivelywhenmorecoolingwaterflowisachievedacrossthecondenser,thereforethe
moreheadofwaterthatcanbeprovidedthebetter.
Arrangementstomeetthebackflowpreventionrequirementswillthereforeneedtobemade
atahighlevel.Ifawaterfeedfromasuitableheadertankarrangementtosatisfythe
regulationscannotbeprovideditwillbenecessarytotakeothermeasuresuchasthe
provisionofabreaktankandpumparrangementlocallytotheautoclave.
General
Allwatersuppliesshouldbeterminatedonthewalltotherearoftheautoclave,atapoint
withinonemetreofthepointofconnectiontotheautoclave.
Inhardwaterareasitwillbenecessarytousesoftenedwaterforthesuppliestotheautoclave
topreventscalingoftheautoclavevesselandheatingelements.Hardwatercanalsoreduce
thelifespanofliquidringvacuumpumpsanddraincondenserswhenfitted,howeverthecost
ofsupplyingtreatedwatertothesemaybeconsideredprohibitive,andifthisisthecase,then
asecondwatersupplywillberequired.Iftheautoclaveistobeconnectedtoadistilledorde
mineralisedwatersupplycareshouldbetakentoguardagainstthecorrosionofcopperpipe
workduetoexcessivepurityofthewatersupply.Thewaterleveldetectionsystemofmost
autoclavesisoperatedonaconductivitybasedsystem,duetothisfeedwaterrequiresa
minimumconductivitylevelof1015microSeimens.
AutoclaveswithanautomaticwaterfillsystemrequireaDN15watersupplyterminatedinan
appliancetapwithasuitableconnectorforastandardappliancehose.
AutoclaveswithliquidringvacuumpumpsrequireafurtherDN15watersupplyterminatedin
a1/2”BSP/DN15compressionfitting.
Autoclaveswithdraincondensersrequireawatersupplyforthecondenser.Thesizeof
connectionforthiswillvarydependinguponthespecificationfortheindividualautoclave.In
mostcasesasupplyinDN20willsuffice,howeverinsomecasesexpandingupfromaDN15
supplylocallyintheareaoftheautoclavemaynotprovideasufficientwaterflowtoreduce
theautoclavedischargetothedesiredtemperature.
ConsiderationshouldbegiventothedischargefromtheVentandSafetyValveoutlets,
whichshouldbedirectedinsuchawayastonotcauseahazard.Thiswillbedeterminedby
thelocationoftheautoclave.

InitialCommissioning
PriorclaveAutoclavesaregivenafulloperationaltestbeforeleavingthefactoryandassuch
arrivereadyforimmediateuseafterinstallation.Itisadvisablehowevertorunasimplecycle
withtheautoclaveemptybeforeprocessingaworkingloadtocheckthatnoproblemshave
arisenduringtransport.

BeforeusingyourPriorclaveforthefirsttimecheckthatthecircuitbreakersandtheisolator

OpeningtheDoor
1. Switchonthepowerattheisolator.Allindicatorswilllightmomentarilyandasounderwill
bleep.Thisistoenabletheindicatorstobechecked.
2. Thestartindicatorshouldnowbelit.Pressandreleasethedoorbutton,whichwillbleep,and
waitforashorttime(about20seconds)untilthedoorindicatorilluminatesandthesounder
bleepsagain.
DuringthewaitingtimethetemperaturedisplaywillshowHold,confirmingthattheautoclave
iswaitingduringitssafetydelay.
3. Onpressingthedoorbuttonasecondtime,youmayhearthelockingsolenoidoperate.You
maynowopenthedoorasdescribedbelow.(Theventbuttonwillilluminatewhenthedoor
buttonispressedandremainlitafterthedoorisopened.)
Donotattempttoopenthedoorbeforethelockhasreleasedordamagetothelocking
mechanismmayresultwhichwillnotbecoveredbythewarranty.
Ifyouarepoweringuptheautoclaveforthefirsttime,oriftheautoclaveisinalowwater
conditiontheerrorcodeF004willbeshowinginthetemperaturedisplayandthelowwater
indicatorwillbelit.Youmayignorethisatthisstageasopeningtheautoclaveandfillingit

4. CheckingWaterLevel.
Theautoclaveusesimmersionheatersinareservoirofwaterbehindtheautoclaveweirto
raisesteam.Theheatersareprotectedfromboilingdrybyalowwatercutout.Ifthewater
levelfallsbelowthesensortheautoclaveshutsdown,thelowwaterwarningindicatorislit
andfaultcodeF004isshowninthetemperaturedisplay.
Inhardwaterareassoftenedwatermustbeusedtopreventscalefromforminginthe
autoclave.Ifmanuallyfilledthendistilledwatercanbeusedbutwhentheautoclaveisnew,
sometapwatermayneedtobeaddeduntilthelowwaterlampisextinguishedasthelow
watercutoutisoperatedbythewater’sconductivity.Avisualcheckofthewaterlevelis
alwaysrecommendedbeforecommencingacycle.
Greatcareshouldbetakentoensurethattheuninsulatedpartofthelowwatersensoris
clean(seediagraminMaintenancesection)asabuildupofcontaminationherewillprevent
thelowwatercutoutfromworkingandcouldleadtoheaterdamage.
5. Loading
Theautoclavecannowbeloadedwiththeitemstobesterilisedineitherbasketsordirectly
ontotheautoclaveshelves.
Careshouldbetakenwhenloadingthebasketsorcontainersnottopackthemtootightly
withmaterial.Ampleroommustbeallowedforsteamtopenetratetheloadproperlyorfull
sterilisationwillnotbeachieved.Whenusingautoclavebagstheseshouldbeleftopenwith
thetopofthebagrolledoutwards,exposingtheloadtothesteaminsidethepressurevessel.
Careshouldalsobetakenthatthecontentsofbagsandcontainersarenotabletospillover
intothebodyoftheautoclavevessel.Anysuchspillagecouldblockpipesandvalvesandwill
notbecoveredbythewarranty.
Forwasteloads,whichmayleakliquidswhenautoclaved,watertightdiscardcontainersare
stronglyrecommended.
Testshaveshownthatthedepthofunperforateddiscardcontainersshouldbenogreater
than180mm(7”)foreffectiveairdisplacementfromtheload.Suitablecontainersare
availablefromPriorclave.
6. Removalofshelves.
Theshelvesarefittedwithretainingclipsatthebacktopreventtippingandstopsatthefront
oftherunnerstopreventaccidentalremovalwhenpullingforwards.Toremoveashelf,insert
itfullybackintotheautoclaveandliftthefrontenduptoanangleofabout30o.Thenpush
theshelfbackuntiltheantitiltcatchesclearthebackoftherunners.Theshelfcannowbe
removed.
7. Settings.
Oncetheautoclavehasbeensatisfactorilyloadedthecontrolsshouldbesetfortheprocess
cyclethatyourequire.
Ifyourautoclavehasasettinglockfittedthismustbesettoposition3toallowthe
parameterstobealtered.

Thesetemperaturesandtimesrelateofcoursetoloadtemperaturesandtheaiminsettinga
cycleshouldbetoachieveoneoftheabovecriteriainthecoldestpartoftheload.Someloads
howeveraresensitivetoelevatedtemperaturesforprolongedperiods,makingfull
achievementoftheaboveimpractical.Howeverthedisinfectionofsuchloadsafterashort
cycle,withoutnecessarilyreachingfullSterilisingTemperature,isusuallysufficientformost
purposes.
ShouldyourequireamoreprecisemethodthentheoptionalLoadSensedProcessTiming
maybeofassistanceforcertainloadtypes.Ifyourautoclaveisfittedwiththisoptionplease
refertothedescriptionlaterinthismanual.
Sincethereisatimeandtemperature‘lag’betweenthetemperaturecontrollerprobeandthe
load,thisshouldbecompensatedforeitherbyincreasingtemperatureorprocesstime,orby
includinginthecycleaperiodoffreesteamingwiththeventopenat100oC.Thiscanbe
achievedbypressingintheventbuttonmanuallyandreleasingitmanually.Alternatively,the
AutomaticFreesteamingfunctionwillperformthisfunctionautomaticallyiftheoptionis
selected.
Ifyouhaveaninterestinanyoftheoptionsmentionedabove,whichcanquiteeasilyberetro
fitted,pleasecontactPriorclaveTechnicalServicesDepartment.
Inconclusion,whensettinguptheautoclavingcyclealargesafetymarginshouldbeallowed
withinthesettings.

Settingtheprocesstime
Theprocesstimercanbesettoatimeupto999minutes.Thetime
requiredissetbysimplyusingthetimeup/downbuttons.Theset
timeisdisplayeduntilthesettemperatureisreached,thenthe
processtimebeginscountingdowntozeroinincrementsofone
minute.
Settingprocesstemperature
Pressingeithertheupordownbuttonmomentarilycausesthe
currentsettemperaturetobedisplayed.Subsequentuseofthe
up/downbuttonschangesthesettemperature.Ifnokeysare
pressedforashorttime,thedisplayreturnstoshowingthecurrent
chambertemperature.
Selectingotherfunctions
ThefunctionselectkeysmaybeusedtoswitchtheTimedFreesteaming,Cooling,Media
WarmingOption,andoptionalfunctionssuchasLoadSensedProcessTimingandvacuum
cycles,onoroffatanytimeotherthanwhenacycleisrunning.Anindicatorilluminatesto
showthatafunctionhasbeenselected.Ifanoptionisnotfitted(orpermittedintheselected
programinmultiprogrammemorymodels)pressingtheappropriatekeywillresultinavisual
andaudiblefaultbeingsignalledandthefunctionwillnotbeselected.

AutomaticTimedFreeSteaming
Whatisfreesteaming?
Incorporatingaperiodoffreesteamingintoacyclecanimproveairremovalindifficultloads
and/orreducetemperaturelagbetweentheloadandtheautoclave,reducingprocesstimeat
highertemperatures.FreesteamingintroducesastageduringheatinguptoProcess
Temperature,whenasolenoidvalveattherearoftheautoclaveisopenedforapresettime.
Thevalveopensatafactorysettemperatureofjustabove100oCandisheldopenforthetime
setasdetailedbelow.Duringthistimesteamisbeinggeneratedinthechamberinlarge
volumesandthiscreatesturbulenceasitpassesthroughtheloadbeforeescapingthroughthe
valve.Itisthisturbulencethatcanassistwithairremoval.
Settingthefreesteamtime.
Iffreesteamingisrequiredthisisselectedbypressingthefreesteambutton.Theindicator
lightsuptoshowthatfreesteamingisselected.Thetimedisplaywillnowflashindicatingthat
thefreesteamtime,nottheprocesstime,iscurrentlybeingdisplayed.Thefreesteamtimecan
nowbeset(inminutes)usingtheup/downbuttons.Ifnofurtherchangesaremadeforashort
timethedisplaystopsflashing,andrevertstoshowingprocesstime.Ifyouwishtocheckthe
freesteamtimeormakefurtherchangesthenfreesteamingshouldbedeselected,then
reselected.
Cautionshouldbeusedbeforesettingafreesteamtimelongerthan15minutes.Excessive
freesteamingtimescanusealargeamountofwater,increasingthepossibilityofthecycle
notcompletingduetoaLowWatercondition.
Freesteamtemperaturesetting
Timedfreesteamingwillcommenceatatemperatureslightlyabove100oC,whichhasbeen
setatthetimeofmanufacture.Ifrequired,thistemperaturemaybeincreasedbyqualified
personnelandtheturbulencecausedbytheescapingsteampressurecanfurtherassistwith
airremoval.Itisdesirablehowevertoconnecttheautoclavetoadrainandventpipe(as
describedInstallation),asthereleaseofpressurisedsteamintothelaboratoryshouldbe
avoided.
Performancecanbeimprovedevenfurtherbyfittingtheoptionalpulsedfreesteaming
system.
PulsedFreesteaming
(OptionalFunction–includedforautoclaveswithvacuumcycles)
Withcertainloadsandincertainsituationstheefficiencyofthefreesteamingprocesscanbe
improvedbypulsing.Whenavailableaccordingtoprogramthenfreesteamingcommencesas
describedabovebutatahighertemperature(usuallyabout112oC).Insteadofremainingopen
fortheentirefreesteamingperiodtheventvalveshutsoffatalowertemperature(usually
about107oC).Theautoclavethenheatsupagaintothetemperatureatwhichtheventvalve
opensagain.Theautoclavewillcontinuethiscycleforthetimesetwhenselectingfree
steaming.Thiscontinualpulsingofsteamoutoftheautoclavecreatesconsiderable
turbulencewithintheautoclave,helpingtodrawtrappedairoutoftheload.
Iffitted,thisfunctionisprogramspecificandisusuallysetupduringcommissioningorby
requestonparticularprogramsinresponsetocustomerrequestsatthetimeofordering.
Whenselectedaspartoftheprogramthepulsingfunctionreplacesthestandardfreesteam

temperatureasnormal.However,whenthesettemperatureisreachedtheprocesstimewill
notbegintocountdownuntiltheloadtemperature,assensedbytheadditional
thermocouple,reachesatemperaturejustbelowthesetchambertemperature.Thecyclewill
thenproceedintheusualmanner.
LoadSensedProcessTimingPurpose
Theuseofloadsensedprocesstimingcangreatlyassistwiththesterilisationofcertaintypes
ofdifficultdenseloads,suchaslargebasketsofbottlecaps,pipettetipsoranimalfeed,by
ensuringthattheloadreachessettemperature.Thesystemisalsoveryeffectiveforbagged
plasticwasteloads,howeverasthesetendtomeltdownaroundtheprobe,consumptionof
probescanbehigh.Forthistypeofuseloadvalidationmayprovetobemoresuccessfuland
economicalinthelongterm.
PositioningLoadSenseProbe
Theprobeshouldbepositionedinwhatisanticipatedtobetheslowestpartoftheloadto
heatup,forexamplethecentreofalargedenselypackedload,orthelargestofagroupof
filledbottles.Thisisimportant,astheremaybelargevariationsintemperaturedistribution
throughouttheload.
Temperaturevariationscanbereducedbytheuseoftimedfreesteaming.

Thisistoensurethatloadsthathavenotbeensubjectedtotherequiredcycleparametersare

Cooling
12. Aftercompletionoftheprocesstimetheautoclavemovesintothecoolingpartofitscycle,
andthisisshownonthecyclestatusindicatorinblue.IfCoolinghasbeenselectedthiswillbe
switchedonautomaticallyaccordingtothecoolingstrategyselected.Otherwisecoolingwill
bebyconvection.
Ifthereisapowerfailwhiletheautoclaveisinthecoolingpartoftheprocessthecyclewill
resumeinthecoolingphaseoncepowerisrestored.
Ifthepowershouldfailbeforesterilisationiscompletethenthecyclewillbestopped.
Thermallock
13. Undernormalcircumstancestheautoclavecannotbeopeneduntilthetemperatureofthe
loadsimulatorprobe,whichhasacoolingrateassimilatedtoabottleoffluid,hasfallenbelow
80oCatwhichpointtheyellowbaronthecyclestatusindicatorwillilluminate.The
temperatureshownbythetemperatureindicatorwillbesignificantlybelow80oCasthis
measuresthetemperatureintheopenchamberspace.Pressingthedoorbuttonbeforethe
thermallockhasreleasedcausesafaulttobesignalled.Thetemperatureatwhichthethermal
lockoperatesisfactoryset.Thiscanberesetbutmustonlybedonefollowingcommissioning
byqualifiedpersonnel.Thethermallockcanbeoverriddenusingthekeyswitchonthe
controlpanel.Thekeysforthisswitchareprovidedinthismanual.
Overridingthethermallockwillcausethemainventtoopen.Greatcareshouldbe
exercisedwhenusingthekeyswitchsinceliquidloadscouldboiloverifventedatelevated
pressures.
Therearecircumstances,howeverwhenquickeraccesstotheloadisrequired.Whenthisis
necessary,firstabortthecyclebypressingthestartbutton.Thenturnthekeyintoits
horizontalpositionandholdingitinthisposition,pressthedoorbuttonandwaitwhilethe
Holdmessageisdisplayeduntilthedoorlampilluminates.Finallypressthedoorbuttonto
releasethedoorlock.Thethermallockkeycannowbereleased.Ifthekeyisreleasedbefore
thisstagethentheHolddisplaywillnotresetandtheautoclavecannotbeopened.Toreset
thedisplay,repeattheaboveprocedureandopentheautoclave.
GreatcareshouldbeexercisedwhenusingtheThermalLockOverride,especiallywithliquid
loads.Evenattemperaturesbelow100oCaliquidloadinsealableglasscontainerswillnot
besafe.FortheabovereasonsonlyresponsiblepersonnelshouldkeeptheThermalLock
Overridekeyinasafeplaceawayfromtheautoclave.

Whensuppliedandunlesspreviouslyspecifiedotherwisetheloadingtrolleyismanufactured
forloadingthelowershelfoftheautoclave.Thetrolleyisfittedwithlockingcastors,which
canbelockedinplaceoncethetrolleyhasbeenpushedintopositionforloadingorunloading.
Theseholdthetrolleysecurelyinplace,preventingitfromrollingbackwards,especiallywhen
pullingheavyloadsontoitduringunloading.
Releasethelockingcastorsbeforepullingthetrolleyawayfromthefrontoftheautoclave.

Oncethecyclehascompletedanyvacuumintheautoclaveisautomaticallyreleasedandthe

Delayedstartcooling(bothlightslitonthecoolingbutton)mayberequiredifexcessive

Iffitted,theheaterovertemperatureprotectionthermocouplemayhavesensedthatthe
heatingelementbecametoohot.Thisisprobablyduetoalowwatercondition,whichwasnot

Gasket
Toprolongthelifeofthesealinggasketitisadvisabletolubricatethesealingfaces.Thisis
carriedoutwiththepressurelidintheopenpositionbyapplyinghighmeltingpointgreaseto
theexposedsurfacesofthegasket,aftercleaningthegasketandinspectingfordamage.A
siliconegreasesuchashighvacuumgreaseisidealforthispurpose.
AlthoughthedesignandmaterialofPriorclaveGasketsmakesthemextremelydurableand
longlastingitisadvisabletoregularlyinspecttheconditionofthegasketandtochangethe
gasketatthefirstsignofdamageorwearand,ifapplicable,after3yearsofuse.
LockingArms
Toensureafreeactionofthelockingarmstheyshouldbekeptfreefromdirtandlightly
lubricatedwithhighmeltingpointgrease.

Ifnoexternaldrainageisbeingusedandthecondensateissimplybeingcollectedinatundish
orothervesselattherearofthemachine,thisshouldbeemptied,cleanedandreplaced.

Thegeneraloperationandperformanceoftheautoclaveshouldbeobservedfrequently,and
anyfaultordefectreportedorrectifiedimmediately,andenteredintothenotessectionof
theoperatingmanual.

Theconditionofthefloatvalvetankanditsvariousconnectionsshouldbeperiodically
checkedandcleanedifnecessary.Particularattentionshouldbepaidtoensuringthatthere
arenorestrictionstothetankoverflow.Inhardwaterareasthefunctionofanyantiscaling
devicefittedtothewatersupplyshouldbetestedandtheheatingelementscheckedforsigns
ofscaling.

theoperationoftheunit.Thevalveissituatedonthelefthandsideoftheautoclavejust
belowtheTopPanel.Toremovethepartsforreplacementsimplyunscrewthetopcapofthe
unitandremove.Reassembletheunitaspertheinstructionsintherepairkit(availablefrom
PriorclaveLimitedoryourlocalagent).Shouldthetopcapproveparticularlytightthe
completevalveshouldberemovedfromthepressurevesselandthebodygrippedinaviceto
removethecap,asexcessivelocalisedpressurecoulddamagethepressurevesseland/orits
pipework.Careshouldbetakenwhenrefittingthevalvetothepressurevesselthatall
gasketsetc.,arereplacedinthecorrectpositionandtheunitshouldbecheckedforleaks
whenfirstrepressurised.
Hinge*
Withthepressurelidintheopenpositionthehingeshouldbecleanedandlightlylubricated
withhighmeltingpointgrease.
Microswitches*
Beforeworkingonthemicroswitchespleaseensurethatthepoweristurnedoff.
Toensurethereliableoperationoftheautoclavetheinternalmicroswitches,locatedonthe
doorlocatedbeneaththedoorcover,shouldberegularlycleanedandchecked.
Togainaccesstotheseswitchesfirstremovethedoorcoverwiththedooropen.
Toremovethecover;firstunscrewandremovetheyellowlockinghandle.
Nextundothetwosecuringnuts.Thesearelocatedbehindtheaccessslotsattheinsidetop
ofthecover.
Nowundothetwofixingboltsneartothehingesandfinallycarefullypullthecoveroverthe
lockinghandle.
Replacementofthecoveristhereverseoftheaboveprocedure,butcareshouldbetaken
thattheslotsinthebackendofthecoveraresecurelylocatedontothescrewsatthebackof
thedoor.
Greatcareshouldbetakenwhenremovingandreplacingthedoorcovernottodamagethe
paintworkonthedoorcoveroronthefrontoftheautoclave.
Firstchecktheconditionandoperationofthesmallmicroswitchesonthedoorplatecloseto
thelockingsolenoid.Nextchecktheconditionofthelargerdoorclosedmicroswitch.Then
closethedoorandcheckthepositioninwhichitisoperatingtheswitch.Ifnecessary,adjust
thepositionoftheswitchuntilcorrectoperationisachieved.
Greatcaremustbetakenwhenadjustingthedoormicroswitches.Incorrectadjustment
couldleavetheautoclaveinadangerouscondition.Itisstronglyrecommendedthatthis
