Summary
An archaeological desk-based assessment has been prepared by University of
Leicester Archaeological Services on behalf of Leicestershire County Council for land at Glenfield Primary School, Leicestershire in advance of the proposed development of the site.
The site comprises of a range of school buildings in the eastern half of the assessment area, and an open grass playing field in the western half.
The site lies close to known archaeological sites, including prehistoric finds and settlement evidence immediately to the south-east, a Roman road and settlement evidence within 300m to the south, and the core of the medieval and postmedieval village of Glenfield to the north.
There is a moderate potential for remains from the prehistoric and Roman periods, and some potential for medieval/post-medieval remains to be discovered during any groundworks associated with new development.
Introduction
This document is an archaeological desk-based assessment for land at Glenfield Primary
School, Stamford Street, Glenfield, Leicestershire (NGR SK 53972 05904). The assessment was prepared by University of Leicester Archaeological Services, on behalf of Leicestershire
County Council , in advance of the proposed development of the site.
The assessment was requested by Leicestershire County Council Historic and Natural
Environment Team as the site lies close to areas of known archaeological significance, including a prehistoric site and finds, Roman road and possible settlement activity, and medieval and post-medieval evidence.
The site lies within the village core of Glenfield, the land is currently in use as a primary school.
Aims and Methods
The aim of this desk-based assessment is to present information on the extent, character, date, integrity and state of preservation of archaeological deposits present within the development area. The assessment must take into account all previous land uses. In addition it must be established what impact future development will have on the archaeological remains. The desk-based assessment should, once the above information has been gathered, assist in providing an informed planning decision as to whether further stages of work are necessary.
All work follows the Institute for Archaeologist’s (IfA) Code of Conduct and adheres to their
Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Desk-based Assessments.

Methodology
The following sources have been consulted to assess previous land use and archaeological potential:
• Archaeological records (Historic Environment Record for Leicestershire and Rutland
(HER), Leicestershire County Council).
•
•
• Previous Ordnance Survey and other maps of the area (Record Office for
Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland)
Geological maps (ULAS Reference Library)
Historical background material (ULAS Reference Library and University of Leicester
Library).
A site visit was undertaken on 23rd April 2009 to examine the area. Particular attention was paid to the current land use of all parts of the application area and its likely impact on the condition of any buried archaeological remains.
Site Location, Geology and Topography
Glenfield lies in the Blaby District of Leicestershire, approximately 5km north-west of
Leicester (
Figure 1). The site lies immediately to the south of centre of Glenfield village on the western side of Stamford Street (Figure 2).
The Ordnance Survey Geological Survey of Great Britain Sheet 155 indicates that the underlying geology of the site is likely to consist of Mercia Mudstone Group clay. The land lies at a height of around 77m above O.D.
The assessment area measures c.
3ha, and is currently in use as Glenfield primary school. The school consists of a series of buildings on the eastern half of the site, the remaining area to the west is in use as a playing field. The ground is fairly level; although there is a gradual slope upwards from the front of the school buildings to the rear (east-west), the playing field slopes gently downwards to the south.

Historical and Archaeological Background
Historical Background
The earliest reference to Glenfield occurs in the Domesday survey of 1086. Here it is referred to as Clanefelde, meaning ‘clean open land’, ‘or ‘open land free from weeds or other unwanted growth’ (Mills 2003). The village is described as consisting of ‘Six ploughlands, all but three oxgangs...valued at ten chillings” (Nichols 1811, 609). It also records that land was held in Glenfield by Hugh de Grandmesnil; a priest and mill are also mentioned.
Throughout the medieval period, the area was woodland outside the Royal forest of Leicester.
Archaeological Background
The Historic Environment Record (HER) for Leicestershire records that there are no known archaeological features within the assessment area itself. However, there are several sites (40) of archaeological significance immediately surrounding the site, and in the wider vicinity of the assessment area.
The following is a summary of these sites in chronological order, the full details of each HER reference are listed in the Appendix, and the location shown on Figure 16.
Prehistoric
Within the immediate area, a few finds of prehistoric date indicate activity throughout the prehistoric period. In the south-west corner of the development site two Neolithic or Bronze
Age scrapers were found (MLE7380). A small broken Bronze Age socketed axe of ‘South
Eastern’ type was found 80m to the south-west (MLE6260). A thick flint flake, which was possibly used as a scraper tool, was found 170m west (MLE7382). Further afield, a bronze knife blade from the Bronze Age was found 600m south-east of the site (MLE6262), and a polished stone axe was found 500m east of the site (MLE7027).
Around 1.5km to the south is a late Bronze Age occupation site identified by over 1600 sherds of pottery, various flints and a socketed gouge (MLE127). Other finds found in the same location indicate further prehistoric activity (a Prehistoric hammerstone (MLE7381), seven Mesolithic flint cores (MLE6994), an early Neolithic blade (MLE7128), and a late
Bronze Age side looped socketed axe (MLE6261).
Roman
The development site is located 300m north-east of the Roman road sometimes known as Via
Devana . This ran from Colchester to Chester and was an important military route (Liddle
1982, fig.20). The section close to the development site connects Leicester ( Ratae
Corieltavorum ) with Ravenstone. This became a minor-route in the later Roman period, with a branch of this road further west leading to Mancetter ( Manduessedum ) on Watling Street
(Liddle, P. 2004: 63). The location is known from cropmarks of two parallel lines running across four fields passing below Warren House Farm plus the alignment thereafter and subsequent excavations confirm the presence of the Via Devana Roman road.
Evidence close to the site indicates Roman activity, with a Roman sestertius coin found 80m to the south-west (MLE7693). 400m south contained further occupation evidence consisting

An Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment at Glenfield Primary School, Stamford St, Glenfield, Leicestershire (SK 53972 05904) of Roman pottery and tile, a coin, and a brooch (MLE131). 350m south-east two Romans coins were found close to the Via Devana (MLE7698). 500m south-east a Roman coin and brooch was found (MLE7699). 500m north a 4th-century Roman coin was found
(MLE7700). 700m north-east a Roman coin of Trajan was found (MLE7696). 600m northeast a Roman coin of Valentinian was found (MLE7695).
Medieval
The medieval core of the village of Glenfield lies immediately to the north of the development site. The village contains one Scheduled Ancient Monument, and four listed buildings.
Some medieval buildings are known within the village. One hundred metres to the north of the assessment area are the ruins of the medieval church of St. Peter, with a 13th-century chancel, it was abandoned in 1876 (listed building grade II, MLE11066). A watermill was mentioned in the Domesday Book, located 370m NE of the development site adjacent to
Rothley Brook. Successive mill buildings have stood by the river until the early 1900s
(MLE125). A further watermill is recorded to the east of this, first mentioned in 1279, and on
King's map dated 1806 (MLE123). A scheduled monument lies 250m NE, a medieval moated site consists of a ditch that is still intact and mostly waterfilled containing 13th- to 14thcentury slate and tile. The main island shows that a substantial building once stood there
(MLE129). On the opposite side of the river to the moated site is a late medieval farmstead
(330m NE). Excavation revealed a paved area and a well with timber ring beam dated to
1400 and an oven (MLE128). Glenfield was within the medieval Leicester Forest, within
Frith Park, before its break up in the 16th century; the extent is shown as MLE17059 on
Figure 16. A series of undated ponds associated with a belt of trees called Fishley Belt are located 350m south of the development site. They are possibly fishponds of medieval date
(MLE122).
Other isolated findspots indicating medieval activity within the area consist of medieval pottery including seven sherds of Stamford ware and 21 sherds dating to C12th-C13th, located 170m west of the development site (MLE6628); a Spanish coin of Ferdinand and
Isabella (AD 1495) found with a medieval seal matrix, located 80m SW (MLE6629); an early medieval finger ring, located 300m NE (MLE6633); a miniature medieval cauldron with three legs and two rounded handles, located 500m N (MLE6632); and a lead medieval spindle whorl and leg of a cauldron, located 450m SE (MLE6630).
Post-medieval-modern
Immediately to the north of the assessment area is St. Peter’s Church (listed grade II,
MLE11067). This was built from 1874-77 by Goddard and Paget, replacing the older, ruined,
Norman church located adjacent to the north-west. A Methodist Chapel was built on Station
Road in 1821, a larger chapel was built in the same grounds in 1878 (Wadsworth 2009). To the north of the ruined medieval church is a 16th-century former rectory (listed grade II*,
MLE11070). It contains Tudor features, including timber framing, and later 17th-19th century additions. One hundred and fifty metres north of the development site are two surviving 18th-century houses at The Square (listed grade II, MLE11071).
The current upstanding watermill adjacent to Rothley Brook is post-medieval, and was working until the early 1900s when the miller moved to the Gilmorton windmill. The wheel and wheel-house were removed, and the building was used as an agricultural store

(MLE126). About 250m north-east is a post-medieval earthwork enclosure adjoining the medieval moat, this is probably remnants of formal gardens (MLE8521).
Glenfield has a prominent place in railway history, with the opening of the Swannington-
Leicester line, the first railway line south of Manchester (MLE16076). The original line ran through Glenfield tunnel (built 1830-32, MLE11072), which was 1 mile 36 yds long - the longest in the world at that time. Built by Robert Stephenson son of the famous George
Stephenson, the line opened in 1832 and carried passengers until 1928. A new line bypassed this in 1849 instead of doubling the track. The tunnel closed in 1966, a memorial remains in the form of a housing development called Stephenson's Court on Station Road.
Cartographic Evidence
The only copy of an Enclosure Map of Glenfield in the Leicestershire Records Office consisted of a Tithe map dated 1853 that covered mainly Kirby Muxloe, and only part of the parish of Glenfield. However, an undated map (thought to be mid 19th century), showing the village, was probably based on the earlier Tithe map (Ellis estate map Ti/18/1 De 76). It shows the village with very few houses and the Methodist Chapel (built in 1821) on Station
Road. The map shows that the assessment area was within the ownership of S.F. Stone Esq. and shows no buildings within the assessment area. However, the map lacks details (i.e. the medieval St. Peter’s Church is not illustrated), as it focuses on the land owned by E. W. Ellis
(who was the Chairman of the Midland Railway Company). Therefore it lacks any detail of the application area.

Figure 7: Satellite image of the development site
(adapted from plan supplied by client, north facing up).
A satellite image of the site shows a number of cropmarks in the playing fields to the rear of the school. A series of parallel lines framing rectangular blocks are clearly visible within the central area of the field, they also appear to continue less clearly in the southern & northern areas. Each block is c .10m in width & length, orientated south-east to north-west, within each of these there is a further sub-division into smaller rectangular blocks. These are likely to represent field drains of post-medieval date. Plough marks (perpendicular to the street) are clearly visible in the northern area of the playing field, on the same alignment as similar plough marks in Ellis Park immediately to the south. A rectangular-shaped crop mark on the north-west corner of the southernmost concrete playground may represent a demolished building associated with the school.
Site Visit
The site was visited by the author on the 23 rd
April 2009 in order to assess the current state of the proposed development area. The assessment area consists of an area of c.
3ha, and is currently in use as a primary school.

An Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment at Glenfield Primary School, Stamford St, Glenfield, Leicestershire (SK 53972 05904)
The immediate eastern-edge of the development area is currently in use as the school car park and tarmac playground (in the north-east corner) (see Figure 8, Figure 9).
The eastern half of the development area is dominated by the school buildings. The oldest of these is a 1950s brick-built building at the north-end (Figure 10), the other buildings range in building style and date from the 1960s-70s (Figure 11). Between the buildings are tarmac playgrounds and landscaped grass/gardens (Figure 12). The ground is fairly level, though there is a slight slope upwards from east to west. The slope is more discernable where there are no school buildings (Figure 13), indicating the majority of this area has undergone some landscaping.
To the rear of the school is the large open playing field that dominates over 50% of the development area. The eastern-end of the field is fairly level, it then slopes gently downwards to the south (Figure 14 and Figure 15). It is possible that there may have been some landscaping to the field. The west-end of the playing field is a newly planted nature area.

An Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment at Glenfield Primary School, Stamford St, Glenfield, Leicestershire (SK 53972 05904)
Appraisal of the Development Impact
No development proposals were provided with the request for this assessment and so the specific impact of types of development on the site is not known. However, it is presumed that any proposed development will consist of new/additional school buildings and other related forms of development such as service trenches, access roads and landscaping. All of these would have a detrimental effect on any underlying archaeology that may be present in the assessment area.
Conclusion
The assessment area lies close to archaeological activity from prehistoric to post-medieval times. Prehistoric activity has been identified from occasional finds immediately surrounding the site, and a known Bronze Age site 1.5km to the south. Roman finds have also been located close to the site, with a known Roman road and settlement evidence 300m to the SW.
There is therefore a moderate potential for remains from the prehistoric and Roman periods to be discovered during any groundworks associated with new development.
The site lies immediately to the south of the centre of the medieval (and post-medieval) village core of Glenfield. The area is set back from the street leading into the village and so the potential for medieval street-frontage activity is severely limited (perhaps just the rear plots of buildings fronting the street may survive). The satellite image indicates medieval/post-medieval ploughing within the assessment area, indicating that the majority of the area was probably open ploughed land throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods.
Any archaeological deposits in the eastern-half of the site may have been truncated from the current school buildings, though the immediate eastern-end may have survived better under the car park. The majority of the assessment area to the west is an open grass playing field and so any archaeological deposits that are present will likely survive well, with some truncation possible from plough damage.

The original line ran through Glenfield tunnel, which was 1 mile 36 yds long - the longest in the world at that time. When it opened in 1832 gates were installed because the locals found it too fascinating! A new line bypassed this in 1849 instead of doubling the track.
