Surgical Technology Program
The Surgical Technology program is offered at SCC through a partnership agreement
with Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA. Students take the
Surgical Technology courses on the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) in West
Burlington and may take Arts and Sciences courses at SCC.

The 12-month program, which begins each fall, prepares sutdents to provide care
to patients during surgery and assist the surgical team in the operating room. Upon
successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a diploma in Surgical
Technology from Kirkwood Community College.
An additional sequence of Arts and Sciences courses taken during the second year will
allow the student to earn an AAS degree. This option provides students with a range
of professional opportunities through their career. Diploma and AAS graduates are
eligible to take the national certification exam for surgical technologists.
Students in the Surgical Technology program will be required to have a Dependand
Adult Abuse, Child Abuse and Criminal Background check prior to beginning the
clinical/practicum portion of the program.
This program is is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Programs (CAAHEP) in collaboration with the Americal College of
Surgeons (ACS) and the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST), based on the
recommendations of the Accreditation Review Committee. CAAHEP representatives

The Surgical Technology program is offered
at Southeastern Community College through
a partnership agreement with Kirkwood

Students take the Surgical Technology courses

courses at SCC.
To apply to the Surgical Technology program,
students must:
1. Complete a Kirkwood Community College
application online at www.kirkwood.edu.
2. Complete an SCC application to take
the Arts and Science courses.
3. Send high school or GED transcripts,
plus any additional transcripts to
Kirkwood Community College and
Southeastern Community College.
4. Take the COMPASS, ASSET or ACT.
Testing may be arranged through the
SCC SuCCess Center.
5. Attend a scheduled Program Conference. Contact the SCC Dean of Health
and Natural Sciences by phone at ext.
5100 to arrange the program conference.
6. Students will be required to pass a
mandatory background check and drug
screening.
All requirements must be met prior to acceptance. Students are admitted on a first-comefirst-served basis. All health career programs
require students to earn a grade of “C”
(2.0) or above in all coursework within the
program. All other eligibility requirements
must be met.
All classes labeled (KCC) will be offered via
ICN in the Burlington Area.
