FROM THE PRINCIPAL
DEAR PARENTS
AND CAREGIVERS,
At Seaford Secondary
College the student is
always central to the
decisions our school
makes. The student cohort determines our teacher
allocation and how school resources are utilized.
The students’ needs are always reflected in our
curriculum opportunities and their delivery. As a
school we ensure curriculum flexibility and value the
importance of community involvement at both local
and global level.
Over the past 3 years, our work has been
driven by 3 key beliefs that underpin everything we
do:
1. S
tudents need safe conditions
to learn.
We have a commitment to consistent responses
and this year have allocated additional leaders
to the house structures to enable greater
support for students in making positive choices.
Restorative Practices continue to form the
basis for interaction between students and
staff and provide a tool kit for problem solving
and developing positive resolutions. This is an
essential ingredient for developing a culture
of mutual respect, building a solid foundation
for effective working relationships and positive
learning outcomes.
2. Intelligence is fluid and is underpinned
by the knowledge that through targeted
intervention, student skill level increases.
Student learning is our highest priority and
forms the foundation of our commitment to
cater for the individual learning needs of all. If
a student is experiencing difficulty at school,
whether it be academically, behavioural
or engagement, the initial intervention will
always examine the needs of the student. Our
commitment is to develop students’ growth
mindsets, where problem solving, risk taking
and challenge are a positive and exciting part of
their personal learning and all, value-add to their
learning outcomes and assist their preparation
for life beyond school.
3. Students will grow in an environment of
high expectations and standards.
Our continued focus on targeted intervention
and growth mindsets in Years 7, 8 and 9
provides a strong foundation for our students
and equips them for the South Australian
Certificate of Education (SACE) in Years 10, 11
and 12. Developing purpose in our students,
and having insight into their intentions beyond
school, enables schools to customise student
learning programs and pathways. Vocational
Education and Training (VET) courses and
specialist subjects enable us to provide a very
rich selection of opportunities for students.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY
PARTNERSHIPS
We acknowledge the idea that a child belongs
and is educated by a village. The employment of a
Community Partnerships and Career Coordinator has
enabled us to provide this wider support to students
by developing partnerships with the local and regional
community. Curriculum based excursions provide
critical opportunities for our students to make real-life
connections between their classroom based learning
and the real world. It is important to us that all students
attend these excursions as they provide the critical
links for rich learning opportunities. If this request is an
issue for any parent or caregiver please do not hesitate
to contact your child’s teacher with your concerns.
OPEN DAY
Our Open Day was an opportunity for our current and
future families and students to catch a glimpse of
quality learning in action. Over 400 interested people
attended making the day an outstanding success!
Between Principal addresses, I did manage
to visit classrooms and was mesmerised with the
work staff were undertaking with our students.
Four comments from parents that were consistently
repeated throughout the day:
• You must be proud of your students.
• Your students are clearly proud of their school.
• Your staff are incredible. • The school grounds are really beautiful.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank
our staff, students and parents who contributed to
making our most recent Open Day such an outstanding
success.
ESTABLISHMENT OF THAILAND
PARTNERSHIP SCHOOL
It is with great pleasure that we announce that
Seaford Secondary College Partnership School is
Kantangpittayakorn School, of Trang Province, Thailand.
The partnership will allow us to work in collaboration
with the school on global projects, send staff from the
school on teacher training programs and allow our
students to connect with others on a global scale.
Congratulations to staff members Adam
Pearce and Hannah Webb for their commitment
to the development and continued success of this
partnership and our International Program.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Our student leaders have been busy this term with
the very successful Transition Road show and Open
Day, organised by Ms Amy Whyte. Our students
have received extremely positive feedback about their
presentations and tours and have been excellent
promoters of Seaford Secondary College to the wider
community.
Student Representative Council (SRC) executive
leaders also took part in the Spirit of ANZAC Excursion
so they can take an active role in the planning and
organising of the opening of our Centenary of ANZAC
Memorial Wall.
This term it is Nashwauk House’s turn to raise
awareness for a cause. Nashwauk SRC students
have been busy working hard with Miss Emma
Thistlethwayte, planning to raise awareness for ‘Fred’s
Van’ so please listen out to the bulletin for details.
Finally, a big thank you to Mrs Merryn Gomez
for lending her photography skills to taking some
professional shots of all of our SRC Executive. These
pictures will be displayed in House areas so students are
encouraged to talk to their School and House SRC reps
to facilitate student voice.
Stephanie Johnston, Student Leadership Coordinator
Harry Stassinopoulos
SPIRIT OF ANZAC EXCURSION
As part of the Centenary of ANZAC Commemorations,
the ‘Spirit of ANZAC Exhibition’ has travelled across
Australia. This is an exhibition showcasing artefacts
from World War I(WWI) and subsequent battles and
is an interactive experience featuring narration of the
battles and impact of WWI. Forty-one of our Seaford
Secondary College students took part in an excursion
to Wayville Showgrounds to see this exhibition. All
Year 9 students, (who will study WWI in Term 2)
had the opportunity to nominate and our School
House Captains and Vice Captains also attended.
Our students enjoyed this experience immensely
and learned more about WWI through this fantastic,
interactive display. We would like to acknowledge
that our students were excellent representatives of
Seaford Secondary College, showing great interest and
respect while on this excursion – we were proud to
receive positive comments from members of the public
about our students. Thank you to Ms Bec Morrison
and Mr John Jamieson for their help organising and
supervising on the day.

BYOD AT SEAFORD SECONDARY COLLEGE
LEGAL STUDIES TOUR OF PARLIAMENT HOUSE
As our students prepare for life after school in the
21st century they require dramatically different skills
and abilities than traditional schooling offers. Students
need high skills in communication (globally), higher
order thinking, designing and creating innovative
solutions to problems, accessing and critically
reflecting on available information, advanced problem
solving skills and being safe and responsible digital
citizens.
On Monday 21st March, the Stage 1 legal studies
students travelled to Parliament House in Adelaide.
There our local Member for Kaurna, Mr Chris
Picton MP, personally guided us around Parliament
House. We were able to go into both the House of
Assembly and the Legislative Council to sit in the
same seats as the Premier and his ministers; I was
able to sit in the Speaker’s chair. We learnt about
the history of Parliament in South Australia and how
Parliament works. Mr Chris Picton made the tour
enjoyable, as well as informative, and I thought the
experience was inspiring.
CHANGING WORLD OF WORK
•
Research suggests that 44% of current jobs will
be done by computers in the next 10 years
• Young people need to be prepared for new jobs,
with 50% needing digital capability.
• This change to careers is as big as the Industrial
Revolution
With the DER funding no longer giving students
access to one-to-one laptops, it is essential that
students bring their own learning device to school to
build these valuable skills. Students can bring laptops
or tablets to Seaford Secondary College and use our
Citrix software, which will give them secure, virus
protected access to the school networks and a variety
of software that will support their learning. Senior
school students can also access a laptop locker for
safety when not using their device, and middle school
students can access their classroom lockers.
Please contact Ben Hardy at the school on
8327 5200 for any questions about our Bring Your
Own Device (BYOD).

SEAWINDS UNIT UPDATE
The Seawinds Unit had its first Pop-Up Cooking
Session with family on Wednesday 22nd March, where
we hosted 4 parents and 1 sibling of our students.
The students made Poached Egg on Crumpets
for the class, staff and their family. This pop-up
session allowed staff to catch up with family, as well as
giving the students an opportunity to demonstrate their
cooking skills and knowledge to their family. The Seawinds Unit is now a DOJO Class.
The DOJO Class is an online application that allows
students to earn points for good behaviour. Parents
who download the application are able to keep track
of the number of points their child is earning for the
class.
Our students have been working hard and they
recently earned enough points to have Pizza Day and
Milkshake and Ice Cream Day!

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM
SAYONARA AND LAA-GAWN TO OUR STUDY
ABROAD STUDENTS
We have had the pleasure of hosting Nozomi,
Shingo and Seri from Akashi College in Japan.
These friendly and outgoing students were enrolled
full time in our Year 11 classes, and over 3 weeks,
have formed many life-long friendships. Akashi
College is a technical college from Hyogo Prefecture,
where students graduate having completed the first
2 years of their University studies. We have enjoyed
having them and wish them all the best in their
chosen careers of Computer Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering and Architecture. Ganbatte!
We also say a sad farewell to 5 Thai students
Pandha, Woody, Amy, Prin, Loog Tan who have
joined us from weeks 7-10. These fantastic middle
school students have really enjoyed their time at
Seaford Secondary College, and they too, have made
lasting friendships. We look forward to hosting the
Thai TIECA study tour group in 2017 once again, and
wish these students all the very best for their future.
One of the most memorable experiences
we can provide for our International students,
is experiencing our unique and exciting culture.
Needless to say, a day at Pt Noarlunga Aquatics
Centre was a highlight for them all, and we welcomed
our 4 full-time International students Takumi,
Hitomi, Chane and Rafael to join us. On a perfect
day, the students experienced surfing, kayaking,
wave-skiing and snorkelling- most for the first
time. We are proud to provide them not only with a
fantastic academic program, but also opportunities
and memories that they will never forget.

Japan Trip 2016
“Travelling to Japan will be a trip I remember for a very long time. Before travelling there I didn’t quite realise
the impact it would have upon me. I have learnt so much about the culture, way of living, the language and just
Japan in general. I feel I have gained more confidence in myself and have made friends for a lifetime. Japan is
such a beautiful country and I can’t rave enough about how great it is and how lovely the people are.
I am so pleased I went on this school trip, as I learnt how to get around Tokyo and simple Japanese phrases.
This trip has inspired me to continue travelling and experience new places. I am very thankful that our school
offers an opportunity such as this.”

have an amazing learning opportunity; one week as
an International student at Ritsumeikan High School,
Kyoto Japan (http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/fkc/eng).
We were fortunate enough to host
Ritsumeikan High School students last year and
provide them with amazing cultural experiences, so
we are looking forward to reciprocating their visit
and our students experiencing part of their culture.

The northwest highlands provide the venue
for some
spectacular trekking. Teams travel
through local
villages home to ethnic hill tribes
and will sleep in
local homestays. This is an opportunity to gain a
real understanding of life
for these ethnic hill tribe
people of Vietnam and taste amazing and authentic
Vietnamese food.
EXPLORATION FROM HANOI TO THE
MEKONG DELTA AND BEYOND!
Students will soak up the sights of beautiful Hanoi,
with its famous Old Quarter, bustling shopping streets
and incredible museums. They then can choose to
explore stunning Halong Bay, the old Imperial Capital
of Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh city – while taking
in the delicious food, great markets and relaxing
beaches of this vibrant country.
Students plan every detail of their trip including
transport, accommodation, the focus on the project
(e.g rebuilding a school), money etc. The expedition
will last for approximately 21 days, with the planning
process, including fundraising, beginning Term 2
2016, for departure December 2017.

AFL ROADSHOW
On the Thursday 10th March, nine students
participated in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islanders (ATSI) Community Event, Nunga Tag. This
is an annual event that is held at Christies Beach
High School for the Aboriginal Community. Students
were given the opportunity to speak to members of
the National Rugby League, chat with local service
providers and collect goodie bags, as well as
compete against other schools in Tag Rugby games.
Students representing Seaford Secondary
College were Jayde, Dean, Alanis, Ty, Kyara,
Steve, Nicola, Kyle and Samyde. We played 6
games in total, with 1 win, 1 loss and 4 draws. The
students showed a high level of sportsmanship,
encouragement, leadership, and most of all enjoyed
themselves.
On Wednesday 16th March, we had three
Australian Football League (AFL) umpires travel
from Melbourne to Seaford Secondary College to
run a skills session with 57 interested students. The
umpires present included Justin Schmidt (#17,
300 AFL Games), Jonathon Creasey (AFL Grand
Final Umpire) and Peter Challen. Students had the
opportunity to learn numerous skills and develop an
understanding for the three types of umpires; field,
boundary and goal umpiring.
The skills session was followed up with a
Question and Answer session, where the umpires
told stories from their careers and students were
able to ask questions about umpiring pathways and
other football queries. Jonathon Creasey told the
students of the most controversial call he had made
and how that impacted on him in the following
days. This was a great opportunity for students to
gain an insight into the world of AFL, in particular
the umpires. I hope to see interested students take
this opportunity to umpire within our local Southern
Football League.

Josh (B19), Hannah (B19), Dylan (C9), Markus
(C9), Ebony (C9), Hayden (C9) and Corey (C9)
competed in the SAPSASA District Athletics at
Tatachilla Lutheran College on Wednesday 16th
March.
All participants were keen and ready for the
intense competition; Hayden came 1st for the 100m
heat, 2nd for the 200m and 3rd for the 100m final
for his age group. Dylan came 1st in the 100m heat
and placed 3rd in the long jump.
Hannah, Josh, Markus, Ebony and Corey all
played a significant role in helping the team Win the
Division 2 SAPSASA District Shield and Pennant.
A great effort by all competitors!
Kayla Tilling
Physical Education Teacher
On Tuesday 8th March, we had a group of students
travel to Reynella East College to participate in a
Year 8/9 Tag Rugby carnival. The first part of the
day involved an intensive skills clinic, focusing on
invasive skills and the basic rules of tag rugby.
Students improved quickly as they adapted to the
game and the different styles of invasive play. At the
conclusion of the skills clinic students met Rugby
League International Women’s Player, Ruan Sims
who talked about development pathways and what it
is like to play for Australia.
Students consolidated the skills they learnt
towards the end of the day, through participation
in the carnival against multiple Reynella East
teams. Our team improved significantly over the
day, winning three out of four minor rounds and
establishing themselves in the grand final. Although
students were unable to finish off with a win, they
showed great sportsmanship and were gracious in
defeat.

Kayla Tilling , Physical Education Teacher
HI EVERYONE,
Hi there,
I was recently reminded
of a maths problem from
my early school years. You
may have been presented
with a similar question:
Which is heavier – 10kg
of rocks or 10kg of feathers?
It is interesting that we recognise rocks as
being heavy, but it is hard to associate feathers with
a heavy weight. Life can be like this. We can think
of stresses and worries that weigh down on us.
Some are obvious heavy burdens that we carry, such
as the loss of a family member or a relationship
breakdown. Others stresses we can brush off as
being insignificant because, on their own, they
are not BIG problems. However, like the 10kg of
feathers, the weight of lots of little things can be
just as heavy as one big stress. These can be so
overwhelming that we can’t think clearly or function
in life properly.
It is worthwhile doing an audit every now
and then to see how we are really travelling in
life. Making time to stand back and look at what
stressors are in our life and how they are affecting
our ability to enjoy life. Look at what you could do to
take better care of yourself – eg good diet, exercise,
enough sleep, do something you enjoy like walk on
the beach, read a book, coffee with a friend.
If you are struggling with problems in your
life, you don’t have to do so on your own. A problem
shared is a problem halved. It really does help to talk
to someone.
