Software Engineering
and Management
Master of Science (M.Sc.)
Campus Heilbronn
Prospects
At the heart of complex, multidimensional organisations, software
engineering involves more than just
the development of modern information systems. Consequently, software
engineers need to move beyond the
boundaries of their job-specific expertise and enhance their professional profiles by acquiring managerial
and interpersonal competences.
Software engineers who aim to be
future business leaders should not
only possess such multiple skills, but
should be able to translate theoretical
knowledge into business practices,
engender interdisciplinary dialogues
and communicate successfully in an
international and intercultural environment.
The M.Sc. Software Engineering and
Management has been tailored to the
needs of students who are interested
in interdisciplinary approaches and
seek a good foundation for their
future careers.
Where the technological,
organisational and entrepreneurial
aspects of software development meet,
you enter the exciting world of Software
Engineering and Management ...
„Whatever career path you choose
- be it software engineering or
management – it is the problem
solving capacity you have acquired
in this Master programme that gives
you the edge over your competitors.
The world is full of challenges. Tackle
them and turn them into business
opportunities. Be innovative. And
success will be within your reach.“
Prof. Dr. Dominikus Herzberg, Professor MSEM

Career Prospects
Objectives
Faculty
The global world is characterised
by steadily expanding world-wide networks, on the one hand, and a global
shortage of IT experts, on the other.
As a result, there is a growing demand for software engineers who can
look forward to well-paid positions
in industry. Thus, the job prospects
for Master students in this field are
highly promising.
Job prosperity in software engineering not only depends on subject
knowledge but also on project and
change management experience.
Moreover, intercultural and interpersonal competences are crucial for
software engineers who seek to take
appropriate management decisions
and to act confidently and responsibly in a challenging business environment.
Heilbronn University has appointed
a body of notable academics who
possess unique competences that
derive from their qualifications and
professional experience. They have
all worked in industry or commerce
and understand, at first hand, the
challenges presented by a global
business world. Moreover, most
tenured lecturers are involved in
(inter)national research projects.
For this reason, the Faculty of Informatics has designed this postgraduate programme to qualify first-degree
graduates for management and
leadership positions in international
IT organisations.
Academic partnerships and exchange
programmes with a number of universities all over the world allow our
students to gain experience in an
international software engineering
context. Such partner institutions are
Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland, Dundalk Institute of Technology
in Ireland and the Universidad Poli
técnica de Valencia in Spain. These
partnerships may include projects
with virtual international student
teams as well as video conferences
and other form of on-line collaboration.
Prospective employers of our graduates are internationally operating companies which require a broad range of
skills as well as specific expertise in
software development. Alternatively,
job openings may be provided by
small and medium-sized enterprises
which develop software solutions for
larger companies. Finally, by successfully completing this Master programme, our graduates will be well
equipped to set up their own business
or to develop and perform software
projects all over the world.
This course has been created in close
consultation with business, indus
try and the engineering professions
to ensure the employability of the
prospective graduates. Cooperating
companies are, inter alia, AUDI AG,
Daimler AG, Bosch Engineering
GmbH, Würth GmbH and SAP AG.
„By learning how to act in an international environment, to work with
people from different cultures and to
pave the way for modern technologies in your business you will have
taken a big step towards personal
mastery. As our students come from
all over the world, the Master programme offers a truly international
learning environment.“
„Software engineering is not only a
matter of technology, it is also very
much about managing people and
change.“
Prof. Dr. Tomas Benz, Professor MSEM
Prof. Dr. Nicola Marsden, Professor MSEM

heart of a bustling economic region at
a convenient distance from the commercial and cultural hubs of Stuttgart,
Mannheim and Heidelberg. Its three
campuses in Heilbronn, Künzelsau
und Schwäbisch Hall span the central
Neckar region in which they embody
the spirit of teaching, learning and
research.
Formerly a School of Engineering,
Heilbronn University has prospered
and developed into one of the major
Institutes of Higher Education in
Baden-Württemberg, providing not
only innovative research but also
attractive academic study programmes
which are aligned to the economic
heartbeat of the country.
The university offers over 46 vocationally-oriented as well as knowledgebased Bachelor and Master courses
up to 8,000 students in the fields of
Engineering, Business Studies and
Information Technology.
A partner of commerce and industry
The greater Heilbronn area is renowned for its successful companies,
many of which support Heilbronn
University.
In the past two decades, the close
collaboration has engendered a
series of future-focused, interdisciplinary study programmes which
have been added to the traditionally
region-specific courses of Heilbronn
University so that it now qualifies its
students for regional, national and
international organisations.
International networks
Heilbronn University has forged
sustainable links with more than 100
reputable international universities
enabling students to gain interpersonal and intercultural experience
while improving their linguistic proficiency in a foreign language. Student
mobility is further assisted by the
university’s International Office and
by the academic coordinators of each
faculty who advise students on the
study programmes pursued abroad.

Italian and German as a foreign language.
A family-friendly place of study
In order to support students with
small children, Heilbronn University
runs a day-care and crèche service
which is available five days a week
throughout the year.
For this reason, the university has
repeatedly received the prestigious
German award of “Family-Focused
Institution of Higher Education”.
