A Bird’s eye view of GCKA activities – FOCUS 2013
"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success." - Henry Ford
A group of disparate individuals from various
backgrounds, age groups, points of view and with no
prior connections whatsoever?? Sounds like a recipe for
disaster?? Not really. The current GCKA BOD were formed
and structured for a yearlong journey in the fall of 2012.
Yes, there were missteps, yes, there were challenges, yes,
there were movements of indecision and moments of tough
decisions, but we talked, we brainstormed, we challenged
ourselves and most of all, we supported each other during
the moment of truth.
We had an untimely resignation of the GCKA Vice President
and Youth Co-coordinator, who had to relocate due to
personal reasons, the Galaxy Theater Cary, our regular
venue for Malayalam movies shutdown operationally and
the economy had run a rough patch resulting in tighter
sponsorship inflows. In spite of all these hurdles, we
are proud and glad to say that we believe we have had a
successful run over 2012-2013, all due to the unrelenting
support of volunteers, performers, and sponsors and the
wonderful community members.

Festival Time
Xmas 2012
This was the first major event for the current BOD and
rushing headlong into a major event, immediately after
formation of the BOD, was a tough, but important
learning curve for the team.Various cultural events such
as Fusion Dances, Oppana, Skit, Solo songs, Album
release, and a grand opening and closing ceremony
marked the event. The program started with American
National Anthem followed by Indian National Anthem
lead by Malayalam Class students. Around 700 people
attended the event that was hosted in Green Hope High
School, in Cary. Delicious Indian fare was in keeping with
the past tradition of the event. The Annual Malayalam
GCKA calendar for 2013 was also distributed to all of
its members. The Christmas program was also a time to
meet and greet friends, and to forge new bonds.
The event was a huge success with tremendous support
from members, volunteers, and sponsors. We had some
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
great positive feedback, as well as some feedback on
improving the program. We used the feedback to bring
improvements to the table for the subsequent programs in
the year. The GCKA Xmas 2012 program was telecast on
MCN Television on March 17th, 2013.
Onam
Onam program is scheduled for Saturday, September 14,
2013 at Green Hope High School Cary. The program will
begin with ‘Pookkala Malsaram’ followed by a delicious
‘Onasadya’ and end with the cultural programs by our
talented performers.
GCKA Silver Jubilee Celebrations &
Social
GCKA celebrated year 2012-2013 as the Silver Jubilee
year and hosted Grand celebrations on Saturday, June 1st
2013 at Green Hope High School, Cary to celebrate 25th
year of the vibrant organization. Mr. Krishna Kishore of,
Asianet News USA was the Chief Guest and the Keynote
speaker of the day. GCKA also inaugurated a senior
forum on this day to create a connection between seniors
within the community, and all other generations, and to
bring them to the forefront of the organization. The Silver
Jubilee Celebration was marked by a melodious musical
performance by G-Razz, and a fun filled comedy show by
Asianet Comedy Star fame Susheelan& Reni Team. The
new 2012-2013 GCKA youth forum members took the
helm during the event with a new vision and goal. There
was no better way to end the Silver Jubilee celebration,
which full of colorful performances, melodies, with a
delicious dinner.
Annual Picnic
Thattukada, Grilling, Games, Tug of War, Face painting,
Food Drive, Piñata game, Lemon and Spoon, Card game,
and a cracking Volleyball competition between GCKA
Annual Volleyball Champions and Rest of GCKA were the
highlights of the enthusiastic and fun filled afternoon. The
event was held in Apex Community Park on Saturday, July
27th 2013. Hundreds of GCKA family members enjoyed
the delicious Dosa cooked by the volunteers, Rasa vada,
Grilled Chicken, Burgers, and Fruits etc. on the evening.
Golden melodies from Malayalam played during the
program took us to the ‘down memory Lane’.
Sports
Badminton Championship
For the first time ever in the history of GCKA, the 20122013 Board introduced Annual Badminton Championship
with singles, and doubles tournament. There was a
sizable and active Badminton enthusiast group at GCKA
and the resultant clamor for a sporting event was too
much to overlook. The Tournament was conducted on
two Saturdays at Sycamore Indoor Court in Bond Park
Community Center, Cary. It was sponsored by Babu
Thomas of Evershine Properties. We had 12 players in
Singles tournament and 16 players in Doubles. New
Talents were identified, and recognized and many new
friendships formed during the entire tournament. After
numerous high-octane matches, Shabu Chenampally was
crowned the singles champion and the duo of Anoop Nair
and Abraham Joseph claimed the doubles crown.Trophies
will be distributed during 2013 Onam Celebrations.
Volleyball Championship
The Second Annual Volleyball Championship was
a tremendous success with overwhelming support
from sponsors, volunteers, players and from the entire
community. One Sponsor, Eight teams, Seven Referees,
several line umpires, hundreds of spectators made the event
a huge success. Joe Matthew, of Real Triangle sponsored
the three day sporting event which was conducted on
May 18, June 8th, and June 22nd, 2013. An increased
number of teams over the past year show the increasing
popularity of the game within the GCKA community. The
event was also a membership drive for the GCKA board
members. A lot of new families joined GCKA during the
event and supported us from the event onwards.A cohesive
and polished performance from “Padayallikal” lead by
Shreedev Nair claimed the coveted championship trophy.
Mission ‘Malayalam’
Malayalam Class
The weekly Malayalam Classes organized by the GCKA, led
by a motivated group of teachers is a testimony to the drive
that all the parents and teachers possess, to ensure that their
children retain touch with their roots and also set them up
to connect with their culture a lot more easily. The ability to
read, write and speak out Mother tongue will help genNext
11
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
to communicate with parents, grandparents and relatives
on travels back to India. Studies also shows that learning
an additional language could help student to perform
much better in other subject areas like Math, and Science.
The fantastic support provided by Mr.George Joseph, Mrs.
Regimol George who put aside a lot of their personal time
for this effort, as well as able assistance by Mr.AjmelKottai
and Mr.Binny Joseph cannot be stressed enough. They
are who make this happen. The GCKA launched a new
Malayalam Class in summer 2013 in association with
Malayalam Mission of Kerala Government. Kanikonna is
the new certification course and all those who successfully
complete the program will be given a certificate at the end
of the program
Malayalam Movie
Finding a theater to host Malayalam movies in regular
GCKA format was one of the biggest challenges we faced
immediately after the new Board took over the charge.
Aftermath of Galaxy Cinema closure was disappearance
of Malayalam Movies from Triangle. Despite all the
hurdles, the GCKA managed to bring a Malayalam movie,
Kammath & Kammath in Carmike 14, Raleigh with great
sponsorship support from C.J Tax Accounting.
Malayalam movies in the triangle general feature a vet
average response. The GCKA has always incurred losses on
movie showing in the past, but has always been something
we consider as essential to promote access to Malayalam
entertainment in the triangle and increase the viewership
among the younger generation. With the highly discounted
pricing provided by GCKA to its members, the shift to
the newer more expensive infrastructure of Carmike
and the tepid response to Malayalam movies, the GCKA
has acknowledged that the losses incurred and the effort
spent in organizing this event are beyond acceptable. We
decided to spend the time more fruitfully to add varieties
of activities to GCKA calendar.
Library
More books are added to Malayalam Library and the list of
books in GCKA Library grown to 70 books. Library check
out/check in facility is now available at the Malayalam Class
venue, 1400 Vision Drive, Apex on Saturdays between 2pm
to 3pm. Malayalam class schedule is at GCKA website.

Youth & Seniors
Youth forum
GCKA youth continued perform a pivotal role in the
day-to-day activities of GCKA. This year, youth forum
members have done various fundraising events during
Cary Springs Daze, during GCKA Picnic and during other
events such as Xmas and Social. Youth forum members
had done a Food Drive Food Drive for NC Food Bank
for the first time in Youth Forum history during GCKA
Annual picnic on July 27th, 2013.Youth forum members
also served dinner at Ronald McDonald’s house Durham
on Saturday, August 3rd 2013. The volunteer works they
have done during various events are to be applauded
wholeheartedly.
Senior forum
The senior forum was inaugurated formally during the
Silver Jubilee social celebrations. This was the result of
months of deliberations between the BOD members
and numerous senior citizens of our community. A
number of our seniors who had once been cornerstones
of the Association were not actively engaged in any of the
numerous events run by the GCKA or part of the day to
day dynamics of the community, for reasons of health,
unawareness, time etc.
We decided upon ourselves to set a platform, where we
can enable the seniors to bring their experience to the
table, to assist them in easier interacting with the larger
community and also attending the various GCKA events.
The activities are coordinated by Mr.Baby Samuel and
Mrs.Monica Augustine on behalf of the BOD.
By the time you receive the souvenir hot off the printing
press, the current team will be on its final stretch of the
journey. We have personally put in our time and energy
for an organization, cause and people we wholeheartedly
believe in. We hope that we have lived up to your
expectations and we wish the incoming Board of Directors
all the success in what will surely be yet another glorious
year for the GCKA.

GCKA
Greater Carolina Kerala Association
Silver Jubilee year
years
is a drop in the history of time, but a
significant milestone for the organization,
we all have come to love and cherish,
the GCKA.
25 years ago, NASA took the first big steps
towards their “Space Station Program”, the
world population hit 5 billion people, the
European Union established a common
Foreign and Security policy and for all the
audiophiles out there, Michael Jackson
released yet another blockbuster album
“Bad”. In the midst of all this, unknown to
the world a group of motivated individuals,
lead by Dr.P.K George formally setup the
Greater Carolina Kerala Association.
GCKA
Sanjay Mohandas
Treasurer
36
The GCKA’s history dates back to the early
seventies when informal gathering of 9
Malayalee families, then settled in the
Triangle area, would occur. The families
comprising Dr.Abraham Phillip and
Mrs. Ramani Phillip, Prof K.V Mani and
Mrs.Annakutty Mani, Dr.Suchindran and
Mrs. Hamsa Suchindran, Mr. Ravi Mathew
and Mrs. Mary Mathew and a few others
took the effort and initiative to organize
and celebrate all Major Keralite festivals
in their homes, amongst themselves. The
next big step, in formally recognizing the
needs of a professionally run outfit to
enable wider participation and cater to
the Malayalee influx into the triangle area,
was only logical.
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
The mission and vision of the Organization
was very simple, organize and promote, the
Malayalam Language, Malayalee unity and
growth, all as a responsible member of the
larger Indian community and as a responsible
community citizen of the USA.
This was done by organizing and celebrating key
cultural events like Onam,Christmas, key social
occasions like the Social night, the Annual picnic,
the various sporting occasions the Badminton,
Volleyball tournament and last but not least they
key community volunteer activities performed
by our talented youth organization for those less
fortunate than us.
Over the years, the membership of the GCKA has
grown tremendously. In spite of this fast-paced
growth, the GCKA as an organization has managed
to streamline the growth very effectively, with all
GCKA events still being organized and executed
in a disciplined fashion, all thanks to the
dedicated efforts of the Board of Directors, the
fantastic team of volunteers and the unstinting
support of the sponsors and members.
To pay tribute to this truly momentous feat
of reaching a sparkling milestone, all while
retaining a single voice, a single identity and
a single determination of purpose; the Silver
Jubilee Celebrations were conceived.
The mandate was very simple, provide a night of
unfettered entertainment, a round of sumptuous
eats, all while recognizing the roots of the GCKA
37
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
and the original individuals and
families responsible for planting
the seeds of the organization as
we currently know.
Every occasion of purpose
has a chief guest. When the
current GCKA Board of Directors
werebrainstorming for a suitable
Chief Guest for the occasion, we
looked at multiple options. Do we
need to bring in an entertainer,
a sports star, a local dignitary??
After an extensive search, we
chanced upon Dr.Krishna Kishore.
Here was a person, who was a
well-known media personality,
highly educated, a go getter in
the corporate world and most of
all a staunch believer in thinking
and living the Malayalee life, all
while living the American dream.
We knew immediate that the
guest would resonate best with
what the GCKA stood for, the best
of both the Indian and western
worlds.
The proceedings of the night
began with lighting the lamp as
per custom, by Dr.Kishore, the
felicitation of the senior members
of the GCKA and the official
inauguration of the Senior forum.
We felt it was absolutely essential
to recognize the elder members
of our community, who stood up
the platform for the current GCKA
infrastructure, as well as enabling
them with a special forum for
socializing, communicating and
getting together. The dual intent
38
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
of the forum was also to bring more of our
elders with their vast amounts of experience
and ideas, actively back into the mainstream.
For the entertainment, our searches first
came up with Kalabhavan Suseelan and Reni
Thomas, who were a small but talented team
making waves on the West Coast with their
decidedly Malayalee flavor of mimicry and
comedy. “Nagavalli” and “Michael Jackson”,
along with PremNazir, Madhu, Mohanlal and
dinosaurs from the Jurassic Park all made
their presence felt for the evening. They were
ably supported by our local talents who
displayed a tremendous sense of energy
talent unknown before.
The musical extravaganza of the night was
provided by the well-known Local troupe
the G-Razz and was well appreciated. The
night segued into a varied buffet provided
by our ever-dependable catering team.
This was a members only event and the
packed crowd in the auditorium only
confirmed what most of us knew all along.
The GCKA in the triangle area is truly alive
and kicking.
It is often stated in jest that it there are 2
Malayalees, there are 3 associations. As a lot
of us can attest, there is never a truer word
said in jest. All of us at GCKA can proudly
standup and take a bow to the fact that we
as a team and very unified one at that have
worked hard, in harmony and selflessly to
reach where we are.
The organization is well poised for another
25 years of cultured growth.

GCKA VOLLEYBALL
TOURNAMENT REPORT
Prasad Mani
Vice President
The 2013 GCKA Volleyball Tournament is one such
kind that stood out for a Vibrant atmosphere, more
players, more audience, multiple rain showers,
Samosas, Vada & of course Pazhampori. The BOD team
sincerely thanks the GCKA family and the sponsor Mr.
Joe Matthews of Real Triangle for making the Volleyball
Sports event a grand success.
Goals:
Our primary goal at the outset when we decided to
organize the 2nd Annual GCKA Volleyball tournament was
very simple - To use it as an opportunity to bring more
people together and offer it as another socializing platform
, Organize matches that brings a blend of competitiveness
and fun element so that it offers a vibrant atmosphere to
the players and GCKA audience.
46
How we did it:
Though initially looked easy, thinking that we can
piggyback on the processes created by our last
year organizers, our new goals this year presented
multitude of new challenges. To accomplish what
we have set for ourselves we realized that need
more teams, more players, a bigger facility to
conduct matches in parallel, more Referee/Line
Judge volunteers, significant planning & setup work
and of course a sponsor. Also, we have to bring in
more GCKA family members to watch these matches
thus offering a friendly social ambience.
Though our initial target was 6 teams, we worked
very hard to make it to 8 teams. If you look at the
team formation, it was a very interesting mix. We
had teams from the last year either merged or
rebuilt as Malayali Padayalikal, Malayali Payyans,
Kera Yodhas. A very interesting development is we
had youth representation in a new team entirely
represented by youngsters as Adipoli Spikers.
Cary Kerala Soccer Club formed two teams as
Kuzhiyanakal and Thappanakal. A brand new team
with new players many recently moved to NC named
as Theeppori became the seventh team. While we
were excited by the response, we went on a mission
to encourage other remaining GCKA members to
form a team eight. That's how team Thattikoottu was
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
formed by bringing many individuals players who
have expressed interest in playing Volleyball. After
the consolidation into total 8 teams and looking at
the size and scope of this event, our BOD team was
more encouraged and enthusiastic in making this a
grand success.
Our plan was to divide the eight teams randomly
into two pools of four teams each and conduct
round robin matches within the league. The top two
teams based on points from each pool will move on
to semifinals and finals in a knockout fashion.
We finalized a new venue Green Hope elementary
school park in Cary as it offered the best ambience,
security and many other sports facilities within the
same park which in a way motivates parents and kids
to come along and stay for longer time. The players
are encouraged to come and practice at the venue
of the matches and supported them by making the
venue available for practice as well. Enrolled a few
new members to the association during the practice
matches.
We made all the arrangements by the day before
the first match, including adjusting the court size,
net height, and levelling sand in the courts for the
matches. Our shopping list included plenty of water
bottles, juice and snacks for kids in addition to
Indian snacks.
Day 1 - May 18:
A beautiful spring day, with gentle breeze and
pleasant sun promised a smooth flow of events on
the first day of the tournament on May 18th. The
coordinators and the volunteers reached early and
made all the setups for the matches to start on time.
We introduced the sponsor to the team members of
the first match and the sponsor Joe Matthews made
the first serve to inaugurate the tournament. Soon the
first round of league matches progressed midst the
47
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
cheer of spectators and the whistles of referees. Malayali Padayalikal,
Kuzhiyanakal, Thappanakal, and Yodhas registered victory after first
round. After a short drinks break the teams went on to play the second
round of league matches. Malayali Padayalikal, Kuzhiyanakal, and
Kera Yodhas went onto register their second victories while Malayali
Payyans registered their first. The fun filled, high octane matches came
to an end, an hour before scheduled time leaving ample time for the
families and players to relax and enjoy the hors d'oeuvre on the house.
Day 2 - June 8:
Contrast to the first day of events, an overcast
humid day was predicted for the second day
of the tournament. On the wet sand the third
round of league matches started on schedule
to determine the last semi finalist and the semi
lineup. It quickly revealed that there won’t
be any surprises from the current standings,
the four teams Malayali Padayalikal, Malayali
Payyans, KeraYodhas, and Kuzhiyanakal were the semi finalists.
MalayaliPayyans won their last league match
on a wide margin to qualify for the semifinals.
Theeppori defeated Thattikoottu; Thattikoottu
along with AdipoliSpikers couldn’t register any
wins, we hope those players come back more
stronger next time around.
We could see the clouds moving in our direction
while the preparations for semi finals is going
on but we decided to take the chances and
start the semifinals Malayali Padayalikal vs Malayali Payyans and Kera
Yodhas vs Kuzhiyanakal on schedule. In a few minutes the rain drops
started cooling down the players, soon it gained strength and made
the volleyball wet and slippery for the players. Referees stopped
the semifinal matches for the rain to stop. Soon the shelter became
a Shangumugham beach or Marine Drive whichever you know, with
street vendors. The food items lasted the huge crowd. After an hours
delay the semi finals restarted from where it was left. Padayalikal went
onto defeat Payyans at the score 26-24, 25-15 in a spirited match.
Kuzhiyanakal tested Yodhas very hard but Yodhas fought very hard to
win the match, the score was 25-21, 25-23.
Day 3 - June 22:
The last day of the tournament promised Kerala snacks to everyone
came for the Volleyball finals. The referees are awarded with mementos,
the sponsor got introduced to the players. The two stronger teams of
the tournament, Malayali Padayalikal and Kera Yodhas got ready for
action. They entertained the crowd amid the cheers, fought hard for
48
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
each points, smashes, blocks, passes,
saves; a fantastic show of teamwork from
both teams. In the end the technical
prowess of Padayalikal enabled them
to serve and spike their way to the
Championship over a very determined
Yodhas, score 25-18, 25-16. The crowd
got their deserving entertainment during
the one hour plus powerhouse show.

Remember Me?
My name is Rumor
I am not always true
I make people hurt
The more I’m repeated,
The more devastating I become
Everyone spreads me
It’s hard to find my source
I am created everywhere, every day and every minute
I am like a hurricane
I suck my victims away from their normal lives
And spin them around
When they’re free of me, when they land
They’re hurt and confused, still marked
Instead of tearing down houses,
I tear hearts apart
I burn a hole in people’s souls
Nobody can avoid me forever
At some point, they meet me
Face to face
Everyone gets at least one turn
So if you haven’t met me yet
Watch out!

GCKA YOUTH FORUM
ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13
GCKA Youth Forum Executive Board
This past year, the Youth Forum was engaged in a number of fun, cultural and service-oriented projects. The
Youth Forum kicked in high gear to try to benefit the GCKA community along with those in the local community.
Kick off GCKA Picnic – 2012
A fun filled evening with games,
amazing
food,
volleyball
tournament, T-shirt sales,and
the GCKA community together
as one. GCKA picnic was
the perfect place for the new
executive board to kick off their
new positions. During this
event, the Youth Forum planned
out games and activities while
also holding many fundraisers.
The many games included:
lemon and spoon race, water
balloon fight, the classic tug of
war race etc. The Youth Forum
had most of their focus built on
52
the new idea they had planned:
Tie-Dye for the GCKA T-shirts.
It was a great idea that helped
to boost GCKA T-shirt sales
by a huge percent. The Youth
also held two other booths as
additional fundraisers which
were: face painting and a game
of knock the cans. The Youth
Forum was able to raise a good
amount from this event. This
helped give the new executive
board and all the youth renewed
encouragement for the great
year to come.
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
Kramden
Kramden was a place the GCKA youth had visited
previously, so this was a volunteering event that
the youth seemed to enjoy and wanted to have
again another year. The focus at Kramden was
to help students who exemplified excellence in
their school and local environment. Therefore
these students were awarded a home computer to
accomplish their many goals. The Youth Forum
helped the organization by cleaning, repairing,
Embracing our culture
and assembling computers before actually handing
them out. Some of our youth even got to work side
by side with some of the students, to help them learn
how to use and take care of their new equipment.
This experience was highly rewarding because this
helped to express the group’s potential as a whole and
demonstrate that the youth was capable of doing many
things. Overall, this was another huge success by the
GCKA Youth Forum.
Onam
Onam is a very colorful and huge celebration
in terms of GCKA Youth Forum. Every year for
Onam either the youth does a skit or dance or
they take part in volunteering. This year with
the help of the BOD the Youth Forum thought
a way to embrace the roots of our culture. As
we all are from Kerala, how much do each one
of us know about Kerala. So this year the Youth
Forum proposed the Kerala Quiz as the Youth
event. The Kerala Quiz was a way for the Youth
to learn more about the culture they are from
and dig deeper into their own cultural roots. The quiz was to be with teams of two and with a cash prize of 200
dollars. The executive board held an elimination round to see which teams would go on stage and take part
in the real competition. Although this was the main event by the Youth Forum, we were still responsible for
volunteering and working on the food line, front table and stage. Without the great team effort of the Youth
Group the great success of Onam 2012 would have been a hard task.
Christmas
Christmas hit the Youth Forum as soon as Onam ended. The
Youth had to get in gear with the new BOD and get ready to
put on a show for Christmas. The youth had a skit connecting
the cultural differences between an American malayalee vs.
an Indian malayalee. The amount of effort put into writing,
recording, practicing, and perfecting the skit is an excellent
example of the amazing team work of the Youth Forum. In
addition, the youth served as volunteers, upholding the service
component of the group.

Fund Raising is what we do Spring Daze Festival
Every year GCKA takes part in the Spring
Daze Festival in Bond Park Cary. This is a
major fundraiser for the youth group which
helps them come together as a group and
plan a huge service event. The Youth Forum
set up a food stall to combine Cary’s unique
nature with the tastes and smells of Kerala.
With the help of Sitar India Cuisine, the
youth sold Indian food
to the public and helped
to enrich others in the
culture of Kerala. The
project helped the youth
develop
organizations
and management skills
through the successful
administration of the stall. The
project was a huge fundraising
success, resulting in a huge
profit for the GCKA Youth
Forum. The event was a great
way for the entire GCKA
community to show support for
youth activities.
Volleyball
GCKA Youth forum members formed a
volleyball team and participated in the
Second Annual Volleyball championship.
It was a fun time and we got many
opportunities to play against many veteran
players. Though most of us were beginners
we played pretty well to given a tough fight.
Final Goodbyes GCKA social
After an eventful and fun year, it was time to bid farewell from our positions as
GCKA youth executive board. The GCKA social marks the transition from the
existing executive board to the next. This year’s social was a special one for the
entire GCKA family; it was the Silver Jubilee of GCKA. The Youth Forum did not
focus on cultural activities; instead we focused on volunteering and doing our best
to make the program a huge success. With the energetic youth and great teamwork this was also another huge success for the GKCA Youth Forum. The Youth
Forum Executive Board would like to thank the BOD and the entire community
for their unconditional support and effort in all activities. We also wish the new
Executive Board a year full of progress and success.

A New Experience
Sandra George
17 years old
Cary, NC, Senior at Green Hope High School
Moving into a new and developing town as a
thirteen year old teenage girl, you don't know what
to expect at all. Having a fresh start in a new town, I
was hoping to meet people and get involved around
the community as soon as I could, so I wouldn't be
the awkward, new girl that stood out to everyone.
The only problem; I didn't even know where to start.
Greater Carolina Kerala Association is an
organization that I never knew existed until I
moved to Cary. I remember attending my first
GCKA event in 2008 for Onam. I was the person
that sat in the audience and watched every program,
had lunch and would not go anywhere without my
parents until it was time to go home. Five years later
and I'm currently the girl who doesn’t have time to
watch a single program, helps to serve food, makes
sure everything runs smooth with the youth group,
always backstage getting ready to perform and
continuously changing costumes and having final
practices.
Over the past five years, GCKA has done enormous
amounts of activities. Eventually, we formed a
youth group and started doing many volunteer
activities to help around the community and did
various fundraising events to help our youth group
to become successful. Some of the events we did
included volunteering at the picnic, setting up a
booth at Spring Daze each year to fundraise and
cooking dinner for families at the Ronald McDonald
House.
At the annual GCKA picnic, the youth group
participates a lot by organizing activities for the kids.
Some of the activities include face painting, water
balloon fights and tug-a-war. It’s really productive
because of everyone getting involved and helping
out to make sure it’s fun. Spring daze, however, is
an annual festival at Bond Park where many booths are set up to
sell things along with various events. To fundraise for our youth
group, we set up a booth to sell Indian food and nonetheless, it
is always a huge success. We have many volunteers sign up to
help out, set up and sell the food along with adult volunteers
and coordinators who make sure everything is runs smoothly.
It’s definitely an exciting event because everyone gets together to
help with the food and also has a good time exploring the whole
area together. On the other hand, Ronald McDonald House is an
event where we volunteer to cook dinner for families in need at
the Ronald McDonald shelter. Usually, all of us gather around at
one house, set up, cook the food and head over to the shelter as
a group to cook the remaining food and serve it to the families.
It has always been a huge success due to the amount of helping
hands and support we receive in various forms.
Throughout these years of being active in GCKA, I found out a lot
of new things about myself. I was asked in various occasions to do
programs such as dances, skits, songs, etc. By deciding to join or
not to join such activities, I've found out what I truly enjoy doing
and what I don't enjoy doing. The best part about all of this, which
makes it much more enjoyable and exciting each time, is that I get
to do all of this while hanging out with my friends and others who
I enjoy being around. Within the past five years, I've experienced
more things than I ever thought I would when I first stepped foot
into this town. Being a part of GCKA and its youth team for the
past five years has changed me a lot. What I loved the most is
that it taught me more than I needed to know about my culture;
there were a lot of interesting things I didn’t know beforehand.
GCKA and its youth group is an amazing opportunity to help get
involved around the community, learn about your culture and
traditions, discover who you are and most importantly, meet new
people. Starting off from being the new girl in town who didn’t
know anything about her community, today I’m a proud leader of
the GCKA Youth Group 2013-2014 along with three other active,
hardworking youth leaders. I can definitely say that I am proud to
be a part of and involved in GCKA so well. Furthermore, I hope
to inspire the new youth to follow all of our footsteps and make
GCKA even better than it already is!

REFLECTIONS
It is amazing that Greater Carolina Kerala Association has completed 25 years of being
an integral part of our community. I feel privileged to be associated with GCKA during
the 18 of those 25 years. Though I totally resent being prematurely called a senior from
an age perspective, I cannot complain if I am called a senior in the GCKA context as I
am part of more than 70% of its existence!
Jayasankar Vadakkeveedu
GCKA’s 25 years’ history has been days of growth and transformation. The transformation
saw the association changing from an informal gathering of a few Keralite families who
were early settlers in the Triangle area of North Carolina to first a formally registered
non-profit organization and then to the current state of a well established organization
with the member roster including second generation Keralites of the Triangle area.
This transformation saw the membership growing to 300 paid members and the
participation at GCKA events growing to 600. We saw the funding for association
activities moving from solely depending on member contributions to business
sponsorship and support from local vendors. We moved from members-cooked potluck
meals to brought-in lunches and dinners catered by leading restaurants of the region.
We have seen our sphere of influence expanding from just the Keralite community to
broader Indian community by participating at events such as Indian Independence Day
celebrations and then to a much larger outreach with our members, especially the youth
team, helping with events such as Kramden Institute’s Geek-A-Thon and Town of Cary’s
Spring Daze festival. There was a time when volunteers like me begged and pleaded
with members of the community to participate in cultural events in connection with
Onam and Christmas celebrations, so that we have at least a 60-minute performance.
Now, the association has to reject applications, even after extending the cultural events
to four hours or more and despite the quality of the performance reaching a near
professional level. We have been outgrowing many facilities we had used in the past for
the association events and constantly looking for larger ones!
As Dr. Krishna Kishore observed during his speech at the annual social event early
this year, the most important aspect of GCKA’s growth is that we still stand united as a
single organization. This growth, transformation and strong unity didn’t happen just by
70
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
chance and were not without any pain. Like any other
organization of similar nature, we also went through
and still are going through growing pains. Where we
distinguish ourselves from others is the fact that each
time we overcome a major issue, we emerge stronger
than before.
The unity among the GCKA community cannot
be construed as a fact that there is an automatic
consensus on everything the association decides to
do. There were always different opinions and view
points on all the topics the association encountered
in its day-to-day operations. What makes us unique
is the fact that we discuss and debate different options
constructively and objectively, and once a decision
is made, all members accept it as a majority decision
and support it whole-heartedly.
I still can remember the heated debate we had a few
years back to decide whether we should formally
register the association or not. We discussed the
merits and de-merits of registration in the context
of member demography of that time as well as in the
future. Once we decided to register GCKA as a nonprofit corporation, even those who were opposed to
registering the association were working hard to make
the registration process smooth by helping whatever
way they could.
The contributions made by GCKA to the community
members, especially to the children, to expose us
to the Kerala culture are priceless. There was a time
when GCKA activities were the only options for us
to get a first hand introduction to Kerala culture. The
internet was not this ubiquitous and there were no
Malayalam TV channels available. We couldn’t afford
to bring visiting Kerala artists to perform in this part
of the country unlike our community members in
New York or New Jersey. Despite us having all these
media options now, GCKA still plays an important
role for us. I won’t be exaggerating by stating that
the first artistic performance of almost all of the
second generation Keralites in this area happens on a
GCKA stage.
There was a day when something, which we take
for granted today, happened for the first time.
Membership fees, the GCKA bank account, the
post office box, various celebration events such as
Christmas, Onam, Picnic and Social, campaigning
for financial support from sponsors, member
directory which evolved to this souvenir, Malayalam
Classes, Malayalam Library, professionally catered
feasts, distribution of Malayalam Calendars, GCKA
Youth Forum, Web presence, and most recently
the Volleyball and Badminton Tournaments are all
good examples. These are all part of our 25 years of
evolution and all these happened thanks to some great
leaders the Kerala community in GCKA footprint is
blessed to have, who worked selflessly contributing to
the growth and unity of the organization. The trend of
new leaders emerging to take over the mantle and run
with it continues in the current days as well.
There are many people in our community whose
services stand out in our 25 years of evolution. It
will be an unfair attempt from me to name them as
I don’t want to hurt anyone by leaving their name
out! Nonetheless, I want to call out the services of
Mrs. Lillykutty Alex. During the early days of the
association, Lillykutty was instrumental in many of
us, including my family, getting actively involved with
the association. Her efforts to bridge the gaps among
various diversities of the community demography
whether it is age, profession, religion or the Kerala
district they are originally from deserve accolades.
Reflecting on the most recent activities of the
association, I can unequivocally state that the
association is in strong hands of the new generation
of leaders. Going forward, there will still be challenges
as well as opportunities. I am sure that collectively we
will overcome those challenges to prevail and exploit
the opportunities to the benefit of our community
members. As members of this great organization, let’s
continue to support GCKA and enjoy the priceless
benefits the association renders on us.

Senior Forum
GCKA is steadily growing in the past decade and naturally we have a large number of
senior citizens in the community. Many of these seniors contributed to the growth of
our community in the initial years, some of them are recent addition to the community
and actively participating in the community activities, and then there is a few visiting
their family in North Carolina. This time around the GCKA board decided to put
together a platform for our senior citizens to collaborate and engage proactively in the
community.
On Saturday, 6th April 2013 a group of seniors gathered at Cary Senior Center at Bond
Park and decided to move ahead with the plan to form a Senior forum. We worked
towards a governing body for the GCKA seniors and decided to inaugurate the GCKA
Senior Forum during our Silver Jubilee Celebrations. This forum can bring in more
participation from seniors in the GCKA activities and providing support to the
community from their experience.

Sheila Blake
and the Mystery
Eaters #1
Ciya Feju
9
year old Sheila Blake was in the middle of
packing for her sleep-over. She was in the last stage
when someone knocked at the door. She dashed to the
d oo r and opened it. “DENISE!” Denis Brown was Sheila's
best friend. Denise did not look happy.
YOU MEAN YOU LOST MY BRACELET! “ Sheila yelled.
Denise was very frustrated. Denise said, "You know Larry,
my brother. He likes to steal everything from my hand!”
Sheila knew Larry. She took Denise and marched to
Denise' house. Larry was waiting. Larry said, "I know why
you are here. After Denise hit me on the eye with a
block and I got a black eye, I dared not to steal anymore.
But I think I know who stole it."
77
No way! Sheila's #2 best friend, Claire Baiss
couldn't have stole it. But Larry had good proof.
There were footprints. And one time, they looked
up and saw Claire running with a dangling
bracelet. Sheila ran after her. Finally, she caught
up and blocked Claire.
Claire told Sheila that she did do it and she
is very sorry. She was jealous that Denise and
Sheila spent more time together. Sheila was sorry
too. Denise told Sheila, "She is only trying to
get attention! Leave her alone here!” Sheila told
Denise to quit. She took Claire by the hand and
they walked together. Which left DENISE behind!
But a week later, Denise became friends with
Claire too. So Sheila had the best sleep-over
everrrrrr! You will only be happy at a party if your
friends are all right!

GCKA and its world
of FINANCE
“Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.”
-Oscar Wilde
Sanjay Mohandas
Treasurer
Well, we at GCKA try to live within our means and
utilize the same to put together an imaginative roster
of activities, event and memories for the year and
work on stretching your dollar to the maximum.
GCKA as the key cornerstone of Keralites in the
triangle, run many events and activities throughout
financial year. As every year passes by, the
membership count in the association, the number
of members participating in the events and just the
range of events itself has increased, placing even
more demand for working capital outlay and cost
of running the events.
The association has reached a tipping point, where the
infrastructure that was suitable to run some of the events for the
previous years is just not enough to make it happen for the current
year. The above graph should give you an idea of what the income
vs expense ratios are for key events this year.
All is well in the world when the Red and Green bars match, but
as can be seen there is potentially a substantial deviation from the
income vs the funds generated for certain key events. There are
multiple reasons for this:
(1)The past year has been a tough one financially for many
businesses and hence some of the sponsors from the previous
years were either unable to support
requests from GCKA or could not
support at levels as done in the past.
This is the sad reality of the cyclical
nature of the economy.
(2)There are numerous associations
in the triangle who are vying for the
same sponsorship pie, with an even
more increased level of competition
and hence the allotments to the
different associations have become
even more fragmented. The GCKA
as one of the smaller albeit very
organized associations, has to
concede some ground to other
associations in this regard.
(3) Even though there has been an
increase in the membership base, the
membership pricing of the GCKA
78
Greater Carolina Kerala Association 2013
at $30 per family remain one of the lowest in the triangle
and considering the unit cost incurred for each member in
the family, the current income from membership does not
provide substantial coverage for the cost incurred for all the
activities.

As has been reiterated by BOD’s in the past, the 3 key income
avenues for the GCKA are:
Evershine Properties Inc. (Babu Thomas) X,B,S,Y
Binny Realty Inc. (Binny Joseph)-C,S,Y
(a) Sponsorship- Our supportive groups of sponsors
deserve our kudos and appreciation, as it is their unbridled
support, which enables us to achieve many of the goals our
organization sets to achieve. All of us at GCKA can assist
both our sponsors and as a result ourselves by supporting
their businesses locally.

Aesthetic Family Denistry (Dr.Renjini Pillai)-Y
(b) Membership Fees- The price all the GCKA’ins currently
pay to access the resources of a fantastic social organization
like the GCKA is very nominal to say the least. GCKA has
intruded into every sphere of our lives and we partake as one
and come together to celebrate all sacred Malayalee festivals
and induct our gen Next into a very dynamic microcosm
of Kerala. This fee structure though is unsustainable in the
medium and long term. The fixed costs of infrastructure,
along with variable costs of food components has been
rising year upon year and the stagnant membership costs
only accentuate the gap between income and expense.

It is definitely recommended to review our current

Property Net (Suku Pandiyattu)-Y
Liberty Real Estate Inc (Sunny Sebastian)-X,Y
TS Tax & Accounting Inc. (Thomas Sebastian)-C
(c) Food coupons- The sumptuous food, which graces
any GCKA event, is a substantial avenue of expense. This
is definitely an expense, which can be controlled quite
accurately, provided a precise RSVP count is available of all
the members and their families, who would be attending the
occasion. Key events in 2012-2013 have seen a substantial
number of RSVP’s being registered and members not
subsequently attending the event, resulting in wastage of
food and indirectly in unwanted expenses.

We would like to request all members to co-operate

After all these are your dollars at work and what better way
to earn a dollar, than by saving it...

A financially healthy GCKA is an absolute necessity to keep
the beacon of Malayalee culture in the triangle shining bright.
Let us all play our part in ensuring that this is enabled, so
