Mission Critical: Multi-site Certifications to AS9100
ORINCON Corporation International, headquartered in San Diego, California, is a systems integration and
information technology company with a long history of converting innovative technologies into practice.
They have won numerous awards for innovation including the Lightning Bolt award for rapid technology
insertion, innovative product of the year and two Tibbetts awards for small business technology innovation
excellence.
The Situation:
There were four operating entities of ORINCON
Corporation International, each with their unique
focused application of technologies. These
include ORINCON Defense, Technologies for
Defense Systems, ORINCON Information
Assurance Technologies for Information Security,
ORINCON Technologies, Technologies for
Commercial Applications, and Sygenex, Inc.,
Technologies for National Security.
ORINCON maintains a small but nationally recognized technical staff dedicated to ensuring the
development and effective transfer of technologies within ORINCON operating divisions. This
technology oversight group has authored well
over 100 papers and publications.
The Challenge:
In late June 2003, ORINCON Corporation
International was acquired by Lockheed Martin
Corporation (NYSE: LMT),
ww.lockheedmartin.com, a leader engaged in the
research, design, development, manufacture and
integration of advanced technology systems,
products and services. As a growing R&D organization, Lockheed Martin ORINCON had the need
to bring process and discipline to their software
development. They had embarked on a path to
achieve SEI CMMS Level 3 certification, maintain
their ISO 9001:2000 certification, and achieve an
AS9100 certification. In 2002, ORINCON received its
ISO 9001:2000 certification through TÜV SÜD
America Inc. and experienced a positive, insightful,
and results-driven certification process working
with TÜV as their Registrar of choice.
With the requirement to achieve AS9100, Lockheed
Martin ORINCON wanted the same level of confidence and experience, and again selected TÜV to
meet certification upgrade requirements. Lockheed
Martin Integrated Systems and Solutions manages
the ORINCON business.

approach to auditing. The pre-audit in June 2005,
led by Lawrence Eaves, West Region Director for
TÜV Management Service, was especially helpful
in that we were put at ease with what we might

expect during the certification audit to AS9100.
Similar to surface-testing, TÜV’s pre-audit provided us with a realistic checklist of questions we
might expect to achieve actual certification.”
Mr. Whitmoyer added,” From the minor findings
discovered in the pre-audit phase to the actual
certification audit we were able to fill the holes
and achieve AS9100 certification with zero nonconformances. Further to TÜV’s auditing team’s
knowledgeable and out-of-the box thinking, we
were able to identify areas where management
systems could apply to our mission-critical software division. We truly felt it was an all-team
effort on behalf of TÜV to achieve AS9100 certification,“ concluded Mr. Whitmoyer.

Quality Management Certification, combines the
effective standards of the ISO 9001 standard with
supplementary items of how ISO pertains to the
aerospace industry.

The Outcome:
In mid-August 2005, Lockheed Martin ORINCON
Corporation achieved multiple site upgrades to
AS9100 with zero non-conformances, including its
Eastgate Mall headquarters. The scope of their
Quality Management System includes: Research,
development and integration of software and systems for defense, intelligence and information
industries.
