For teaching from September 2016
Epping Forest Field Centre is a purpose-built non residential centre located in a terrific Site of Special Scientific Interest
(SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation that provides excellent learning opportunities. It has excellent transport links
and is only a few kilometres from the M25 and M11 and from Loughton Station (Central Line for London Underground
Services) and Chingford Station (rail services from Liverpool Street Station).
The Centre is managed by the Field Studies Council on behalf of the City of London, and was established to
commemorate the European Year of Conservation in 1970. FSC Epping Forest Field Centre delivers the City of London
environmental learning service in Epping Forest.
Our new courses are designed to fit the criteria of the specifications for first teaching in 2016. As such they are
designed to incorporate a number a qualitative and quantitative core geographical skills that students are required
to understand. These may include the use of GIS using ArcGIS software and/or Field Network Systems.
Our courses are designed to meet the criteria of OFQUAL by offering human and physical experiences in the field as
a minimum of two fieldwork days.
Epping Forest Field Centre is part of the London Region; additional fieldwork options are available at Juniper Hall,
Amersham, Bushy Park, The Regent’s Park, Greenwich Park and London locations

Content
The Causes, Impacts and Management of Flooding in Loughton
Students will investigate the hydrology of the River Roding drainage basin and the
factors that give rise to flooding. The physical and human factors that increase the risk
of flooding will be considered. An investigation into the social, economic and
environmental impacts of flooding will be carried out in Loughton. Students will visit
the Loughton Brook Flood Alleviation scheme to observe how management strategies
can reduce flood risk.

The Changing Cross Profile of Loughton Brook / Debden Brook
Students will carry out an investigation into the changing long profile and cross profile
along a river. They will identify the fluvial processes involved in influencing these
changes and observe the characteristics and formation of landforms resulting from
erosion and deposition – meanders.
Loughton Brook is available September to April. NB: water levels early in the season
can be very low.
Debden Brook is available throughout the year. NB: you will require transport all day.
Landform Process and Change: River Landforms
Students will investigate the formation and characteristics of river meanders. There
will be an opportunity to compare the meanders with a straight channel section to
observe the differences associated with these contrasting landforms. If time permits
there will be an opportunity to observe and profile the V-shaped valley in the upper
course. *

The Woodland Ecosystem
Students will investigate the concept of inter-relationships within a small scale
woodland ecosystem in Epping Forest. They will gain an understanding of producers,
consumers, decomposers, food webs and the nutrient cycle.

Counter-urbanisation and Suburbanisation of the Rural Environment in London’s
Greenbelt: Suburbanised Villages.
Students will investigate the causes and consequences of population growth visiting
two contrasting settlements to measure differences in housing age, service provision
and environmental quality.

Up to 6 hours of tuition, longer days can be arranged on request

Established health and safety procedures. All education staff are first aid trained & DBS checked

Tuition is delivered by talented tutors, with not only an expert knowledge of their subject and field work
locations, but a passion for the subject being taught. All members of our education team are DBS checked
and undergo a regular and rigorous training process, including training in first aid, risk assessment and
water safety.
